oh my bad, now i see the increased price tag once you add IS, decisions decisions! argh!
-
If that's the case... might a 70-200mm F/4.0 L be best? Though it doesn't seem to have IS.

I have fully decided to join the Canon camp (XTi), and I'm seconds away from
making my first big purchase. I've definitely picked the 50mm F/1.8 prime lens
as a -secondary- lens because all your opinions are quite valued, and it seems
for a hundred bucks, it may be a good experimental lens before investing in any
other primes I may want.

Now, for a primary lens... I'm horribly torn. I truly can not choose between the
following:

17-85mm F/4-5.6 IS
28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS
70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS

For my film camera, a 70-300mm was my primary lens, though I'm toying with the
28-135mm because of the half an f-stop you gain... but is it really that worth
it? Or would a wide-angle be better initially? Any opinions or comments on
which lenses you find yourself using the most frequently would be truly
appreciated. After a few months or so, I will likely be investing in a 3rd lens,
but what I'm after initially will be a good lens to get to help get to know my
new camera.

Thank you, and happy 2007!

Are magnifying filters a non-option? I had a set of these for a lens on my film camera back in the day, but haven't seen many people using them anymore...

What is the best method for changing color raw images to B&W, is it with the desaturate option? Or channel mixer? I've tried a few infrared tutorials for different B&W pics after the fact, as well. Any other lessons/recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Mark, that was a fabulous link, thank you so much! I'll definitely be making my own bouncecard for the speedlight.
Back to pop up flashes... One other solution I've found is a plastic LCD diffuser, an thin film found on laptop screens to diffuse the backlight. Not exactly the easiest thing to find... unless you work in IT and have some dead laptops laying around to loot from. I have not tried this possible solution yet, but I'm planning to test the film canisher, tracing paper, and LCD diffuser tonight and see what the differences are. Should all go according to plan I'll post some images.
Thanks all!

Has anyone attempted to make a diffuser for a pop-up flash? I am looking for a
getto rig to help with some low light pictures where I do not want to kill the
subject with the harsh pop-up flash. (my new camera is ordered, complete with
speedlight and diffuser, I just need a solution for tomorrow!)
Someone pointed this out to me (see attached pic) and it looks handy!

Ooooh I do like that, every lens reviewed, gracias! :)

BuyDig.com (with 8.37 out of 10) has the XTi for $661 for the silver body. So far that's the best price/review combination I can find...
Also, what's up with the cheaper color? Is it just because black has high demand?

Would anyone in their right mind pick the 50mm/1.8 over the 1.4? I'm shocked at how much cheaper it is, and did check out this thread earlier:
http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/
Is there anyone here with the 1.8 that feels it is decent enough? I am shopping for a new camera as I type, have deceided to go with the Canon XTi, and wondering if I would be happy with a decent zoom (the 17-85mm) and a reasonable prime.
Thanks!
