I have experienced similar problems with the autofocus. I fine-tuned each of my lenses with the D7000 and have had excellent results since.

I recently purchased a 17-55 in excellent condition for $750 and must say I am extremely pleased with it. My 18-200 is for sale, never to be used again.

Isaac:
I find myself using the 180 f 2.8 and 105 f 2.8 Micro much more often than my Nikon VR lenses. The VR's are a very good walk-around lens, but I really like the primes low light versatility and improved bokeh, particularly for indoor portrait shots.

I purchased a small clip-on mirror (EBay) that works with the ML-L3 so you can shoot from behind the camera. The range is decent.

I also use Really Right Stuff's L-bracket both on my D-70 and D-200 and like the build quality and light weight.

Ken...
I shoot film with a Nikon FA and digital with a D-70 and D-200. If you shoot both film and digital, then the 75-300 is a pretty decent lens, although a bit slow to autofocus. If you shoot digital only, then I highly recommend the 18-200 VR lens for a very good walk-around lens with good range or if you have the $, then the 80-400 VR is exceptional.

My fav primes on my D200 are:
20mm f2.8; 50mm f1.8; 105mm f2.8 (great macro and portrait); 180mm f2.8 (excellent med range tele); and 300mm f2.8 manual focus (gotta have quick hands and eyes, but produces tack sharp pics with great bokeh).
70-200 f.2.8 or f4
