When I travel I can't be bothered carrying a notebook but like to shoot RAW+JPEG. Some SD cards come with a mini USB reader. I go to an internet cafe, or one of a million hostels with free internet, and back my photos up onto two DVDs. I also have an MP3 player as a back up option and I might email my favourites to gmail which allows 20meg files, enough for RAW. Besides a slow burst rate, which means nothing to me, I can't see any advantage to shooting JPEG only.
Most of my travelling has been in Asia though so I'm not sure what it costs to burn a DVD in Europe but it'll be cheaper than an SD card.
Btw, I wonder if the chap who bags RAW is Ken Rockwell. You only have to google his name to hear what people think of him, but that's another thread altogether.

Check nikon.com.sg When i went there last year it had a list of authorised dealers and the RRP so you can at least establish a starting point. You can also get your GST back at the airport which i think was put up to about 10% last year.
I noticed compared to New Zealand, accessories were considerably cheaper (batteries, remotes, filters) and I also made a 30% saving on a lens.
Happy shopping. I'd love to go back as prices in Europe are insane.

Thanks everyone. Think I'll get my new lens this week.

I've read plenty of reviews of the Sigma 30mm and the Sigma 10-20mm and there
seem to be plenty of warnings of sample variation with third-party lenses. I'm
now considering the Tamron 90mm macro but haven't heard the same warnings. Is it
safe to say sample variation isn't an issue with this lens? I guess for macro
lenses there's more quality control? I'm just wondering if I could order online
or if I should buy from store.

I'm not sure about the D40 but on my D80 I have two types of noise reduction. There's High ISO NR (which I think can be replicated in Capture NX) and Long Exposure NR (which can't be replicated). If you shoot RAW and have Capture NX you can decide later what you think of high ISO noise reduction. If you shoot long exposures though I usually find it's best to use LE NR. It does double the time to process each exposure in the camera though.
I tend not to use much NR though so I'll let the pros give you more info on software options.

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson is a good intro to getting good exposure. Read up on histograms as well which will help you correct your exposure. I've recently been using manual exposure which makes me stop and think about what I'm doing rather than letting the camera do it for me.

I guess I'll just wait until the next version comes out. Thanks for your help.

In Capture NX, is it possible to rename a step in the same way you'd give a
layer in Photoshop a meaningful name?

I'm a bit of a newbie having had a DSLR only about a year. I bought a decent tripod and head in January and saw a difference in my shots immediately. The reason I bought the tripod was for sharper images and low light/longer exposure shooting but the real advantage was it slowed me down so much. I take fewer but more considered shots and compose more carefully. With the camera fixed I've learnt more about manual exposure and focusing, which have helped me even in handheld environments. I now spend more time looking around and thinking about my shots rather than snapping away and walking on. VR/IS would not have had the same effect.
Of course I'm not really into street photography and haven't taken an extended trip since I got the tripod, so I can't say how I'd feel in those situations.

4. I haven't hunted for alternatives but i use gspace. Sign up a new www.gmail.com account (2GB of space), use firefox as your browser and use the plugin at www.getgspace.com. It provides a basic interface like Windows Explorer in Firefox. It's not half a TB but you can sign up to as many accounts as you like, or just use it for your most treasured shots. And it's free.

Again, not a photography tour but consider www.intrepidtravel.com as the groups are generally smaller and you get to be a little more independent than with most operators.
If you decide to go alone the website gives some pretty good itinerary suggestions too.

I'll be buying my Gitzo GT2530 legs this week, while I wait anxiously for my RSS
BH-40 to arrive. I can't possibly leave my fancy new legs unused so I'm
wondering, is it physically possible to attach my Nikon D80 directly to the
legs? And if so, is it advisable? Really just a short term solution to satisfy
my curiosity until the ballhead arrives.

Check out www.stevemccurry.com

It could also be that you are in one of the automatic modes. Change the dial to M, A, S or P for more options.

Not the answers I was hoping for... more $$$. Thanks for your replies.

Hi Gus
I have the same lens. I'd never shot with hood and flash at 18mm but I just tried it now and get the same shadow. As mentioned above I guess the flash can't get past the hood. You can even see the shadow in the viewfinder when the flash goes off.

After a lot of looking, I'm pretty set on getting a Gitzo GT2530 and RSS BH-40
LRII. Considering this is really stretching my budget I'm thinking of not
getting an L plate (at least for now). Is this foolish? Besides the convenience
and support of an L plate, what else am I missing?
Is it difficult to use a BH-40 in portrait orientation without the L plate?
Can I lean the camera downards a little in portrait?
While we're at it, should I get the LRII or something else?
I'll mostly be using the tripod for landscapes and perhaps some macro work.

Great, thanks for your responses everyone.
Jay, I like the sound of the removable mitt flaps. I'll keep a watch out for some.

Is there a risk of damaging anything on a DSLR by changing lenses when it's
freezing outside? There's no dust, wind, or snow at the moment.
Also, I seal my camera and lens in a ziplock bag when leaving the house, and
coming back. Is it more risky going from hot to cold or cold to hot?
-
I second India. The suffocating cities, vastness of the mountains, the Ganges river, Taj Mahal. And the food! All at bargain prices. Not sure if it'll be getting too hot around that time unless you stick to the far north.

All of the South Africans I know tell me never to check anything valuable in if you're going via Johanesberg. Some of them have learnt the hard way. Maybe an attempt to slow them down would be your only hope, i.e. Pelican case inside a padlocked bag, with chicken wire and plastic wrapping protecting it. Of course this also screams valuables inside! Not being a luggage handler, I don't really know how much time they have so this may be a waste of time.

I'm 5ft 5, brown haired with green eyes. I like candle lit dinners, sunset at
the beach and travelling. Unfortunately my tripod is not up to any of these
situations. I'm not even close to deciding on a ball head yet but i'm about to
settle on the Gitzo GT2530 legs. I figure anything bigger and I won't be
bothered carrying it around, and from what I can gather anything smaller won't
be sturdy enough. Feel free to disagree though.
My question is, for someone of my height, is the GT2530 approaching too high? I
know I could always just not extend all of the legs, but then perhaps the GT2540
might be a better option with the fourth sections unextended. That would also
work well for travelling. Which leads me to another question. Is the GT2530
really too large for carry-on luggage? Do all 2530 owners check them in?
By the way, I probably won't be shooting anything larger than my Nikon 70-300VR
on a D80 so I'll probably go for a RSS BH40, Markins M10 or something of that size.

A lot of the talk about buying third party lenses seems to be around
inconsistency of quality for the same model. I'm considering the Tokina 12-24.
If I were to try three samples in a store, which tests are usually applied to
select the best sample? What would I be testing for exactly?
-
Thanks for the very quick response. It's probably a good thing it's not too cheap. I don't really need to buy a new lens, but being in Korea seemed like a nice excuse. I think I'll start looking out for some more competitive stores in Central Europe.
What focal length(s) did Lee Friedlander use???
in Leica and Rangefinders
