Thank you all for your input. Brian, thanks for the gamma tool link.
So concerning this sRGB-AdobeRGB dilemma, it seems to me that the setting on the camera should always be AdobeRGB, as this covers a greater spectrum of colours than sRGB does, and then when converting the data from RAW to JPEG or TIFF for photo labs I ought to switch to sRGB? How do you do this? Adam, you advise me to convert to sRGB, but where exactly do you do this?
In Nikon Capture NX, when I convert a picture to JPEG there are two fields in the options panel: the degree of quality (that is, high compression, optimal balance, high quality, or excellent quality); and whether or not an ICC-Colour profile should be imbedded. When I convert to TIFF, there is an additional RGB or CMYK choice. I assume CMYK is for the 8-or-so-cartrige printers that use more colours. And I assume that if I take my pictures to a photo lab, I ought to first ask them whether they support RGB or CMYK (?).
I'm new to this game, so these questions might sound pretty obvious to some. Here's another one: If I were to have my own fancy printer at home, why would I convert to TIFF before printing? Wouldn't the printing of RAW data give me the best pictures (especially poster size)? One last question: Am I right in my understanding that all photo labs can only work with JPEG or TIFF files?

I'm a new Nikon D200 owner and have recently tested the quality of a local
photo lab by converting RAW pictures into JPEG with the software that came with
the camera and getting the lab to print some samples. I was surprised to find
that most pictures were lighter than what I was seeing on my computer monitor.
Is this because my monitor isn't properly calibrated? Could I expect better
prints if I used a home printer - say, a Canon iP9500, or the new HP B9180?
Which of these two is the better one?
I have also acquired Capture NX and have been editing some photos with it (but
haven't yet tested the lab's performances on the results). But what I've
noticed is that the RAW pictures that Capture NX "renders" tend to be darker
than the pictures that Picture Project works with? Can someone explain to me
the differences I've been noticing?

Can anyone tell me what filters (and/or other techniques) I ought to use to
reduce the glare from electric lights when shooting street scenes at night? (I
shoot with a Nikon D200) Thanks for your input.
