  1. Problem I have with showing you proof is I dont have any high iso shots to hand with the 30D, reason being I soon learnt not to go above iso800 as the pictures would be useless.

I can show you high iso shots from the 40d

    http://picasaweb.google.com/martyngreswolde/40DTestFile?authkey=8IhllwxvjqA

Tell me you can get an ISO1600 shot this clean from a 30D.

Let me stress, this image ha no PP from the original RAW. only change was to bring it to 8bit, sRGB and Jpeg level 7

  2. Frank, take it from someone who had a 5d, and 30 & 40d the 40d wipes the floor with the 30d

I would buy the 40d, i cant stand using the 30d for weddings (i would rate the 40d on par with the 5d)

  3. OK, if you set your metering mode to matrix and then use the focus point that lets you compose the shot correctly (EG dont focus with center point and re-compose) the camera and flash should work out you need fill flash and wok it out from there.

Take one shot, decide if its too much or too little and then use compensation.

Another factor is your shutter speed will not affect your flash but your iso and aperture will so if your running low of flash output, control the natural light exposure with shutter speed and keep the aperture as wide as you can to 'help' the flash as much as you can.

The best advise I can give is get outside and experiment.

  4. Get a couple of batteries just in case, they are fairly cheap for non canon brands.

As for the memory cards, you can see the results of speed testing here > http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-8198

There is a small difference on writing to the cards, you pay your money for reading off the cards. if you have 500 images to download and a small time to do it in (like me) buy the extreme 4 cards, if you can cope with a more leisurely pace, go for the ultra 2's

  5. Just playing devils advocate here.

What do you think you can do with film that you cant do with digital?

I see a lot have a lower spec canon, I'm not sure you should be comparing a film camera to

a low spec Dslr. They are so different you may as well compare to a point and click.

Also, just because you have digital doesnt mean you have to be phlegmatic with your

shooting style, or at least I dont have too.

With a little time and patience needed to learn the new way to take photo's you will be

turning in the same results. Thats the point though, you do need to re-learn a lot of

    technique.

Of cause if your talking going back to medium format thats a different ball game but

again, I cant see why you would think about replacing file medium format with digital

    35mm

  6. The long and short answer is there are very few lens's with the quality of the 70-200 2.8 IS. There are also very few lens's with the same weight and price tag!

If you need those specs, don't waste your time looking for an alternative, there isn't one.

If you don't need the f2.8 take a look at the 70-300 4.5-5.6 DO IS lens. It uses Canons diffracted optics to give you a small (10cm) light weight (720g) lens with a lot of reach

  7. I use the 5D with the battery grip (and two battery's) I shot an average of 1500 a day at a wedding and my battery's are 50% drained.

Check the charger and if your charging the battery's next to a magnetic source.

Other than that, send the whole lot back and get a replacement
