Hello, my answer is:
17/40mm F4 L + 50mm F1.4 + 70/200mm F4 IS L

Hello, I agree you should keep the kit lens until you can really notice the "problems" it may have.
First you are going to have much other things to think about :), when you understand how to get good shots with the DSLR and you can?t do it only because of the lens then you should by another one, 17/40mm F4 L is the ONE !

Thanks for all your replies

Hello, i have a Canon EOS 400D + Canon EF 17-40 F4 L
I want to buy a Polarizer filter + a ND filter, but need some help... and i
don?t want to spend alot of money...
I have seen there are diferent type of filters, including the Cokin P holder
type and screw in filters. My questions are:
- What is best? The P holder or the screw in?
- I have seen that the holder, must have an adaptor ring. Does this ring have
some glass? Because i have a UV filter for proteccion and i didn?t want get my L
glass with alot of weather exposition...
- Does the P series will be enought not to get vigneting? Or must i get Z-Pro?
I would apreciate all the help you could give me!
Thanks, Daniel

Hello, i have a 400D with 17-40 L.
My question is how does FTM focus really works?
When i have it in AF i can still turn the focus ring, i have notice that, but
when i click the shoting button it goes and refocus on the selected focus point...
I can?t use manual focus without turning from AF to MF?
I should ! Shouldn?t I ?

I would go 17-40L and correct the distortion on PhotoShop, its easy more cheap and more versatile.

If you shoot in P or Green setting why did you bought such a valiuable camera and lens?
A point and shoot would provide better results...
Shoting with SLR is more dificult because you have to learn the Basics of Photo.
Read, Study and then Shoot !

Thanks for all replies to the question!
I have to say that as a beginner (i only have slr for 2 month now), usually use the Av mode and sometimes Tv nothing else.
The Manual i think is a little more further in my development.
-
Question - In what shooting mode do you usually take most of your pictures?
TV? AV? Manual? All of them?
One for each ocasion?
Thought it could be interesting to see the answers!

Thanks for all the replies.
I think i will a get "cheap" and small camera instead of putting a lot of money on my 400d plus the risk and the lack of mobility.

Hello a im big fan of bodysurf, and sometimes while in the water i feel the will
of taking pictures of what i see.
Is there equipment to go underwater with my 400D + 17-40 F4L?
Is it safe if there is?
Or should i use a "disposable" camera and don?t take the chance?

After reading a lot of posts in this forum and in another ones i have bought a 17-40 F4 for replacing the kit lens.
I?ts absolutely fabulous and i have to thank everybody who told me to buy it instead of anything else...
Go for 17-40 F4 and you cant complain about lens in that focal lenght anymore.

I like the toploader from lowepro, probably the 70 AW should be the one you need. The slinshots are nice but i prefer the toploader ones.
Look at: http://www.lowepro.com/Products/ and find the one that suites your needs.

Mine had some noyse and click problems also ...
I?ve exchanged to the 17-40 f4 for about two weeks now, and its like night and day diference !
Save some money and when you buy a new lens get the 17-40 F4 L.

Thanks for the help !

Hello !
I going to buy some new lenses for my XTi (replacing the kit one) and i have
seen really good reviews about the Sigma 17-70mm F2,8-4,5 DC Macro. It?s cheap
and seems a good lens for a beginner like me that doesn?t have much money to
spend right now. I usually take pictures of insects in the garden and landscapes
and not many indoor ones.
For indoor and night pictures im thinking in the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II or the
Canon EF 35mm f/2 (because of the crop factor).
I would like to know some opinions about this choices.
-
Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 EX would be my choice !
-
Hello! I face the same problem... and after reading a lot i am going to buy the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro because is less expensive than the Canon ones has really good reviews and the abilitie to take macro pictures.
But if i had more money i would buy the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM.

I also use a 2Gb 80X but from another brand and i don?t have any complaints. This memory card takes 490 pictures in JPEG Large and Fine, and the speed is more than enough for me.
The Sandisk are in fact the top memory cards but they are also more expensive that another ones.
-
I usually shoot landscapes and insects and now after reading the posted opinions, my mind is going to the Sigma 17-70mm F2,8-4,5 DC Macro and not to the hyperzoom.
-
Hello!
I?ve bought the Rebel XTi (EOS 400D in Portugal), and a friend of mine let me
use the Canon EF 18-55mm kitt lens he never uses.
So i have a lens that i can use but want to buy a new and better one that can
take farly good shots and if possible not a very expensive one.
I?m inclined to the SIGMA Zoom 18-200mm F3,5-6,3 DC or the Sigma 17-70mm
F2,8-4,5 DC Macro because they are less expensive that the Canon ones.
Between these 2 lenses is the zoom VS F2,8 and macro abilities.
I would like to know your opinion about these 2 lenses and other ones that you
would think suitable to my problem.
