  2. <p>Hello,</p>

<p>I have a burning question concerning the full frame Nikon D700 I just bought and it's full frame capability and lenses. Please be patient an break down your answers to Sesame Street Simple being that I'm still learning about photography and how to use all of the functions on my camera.</p>

    <p>I traded in my Nikon D200 & Nikon D300 for a Nikon D700.</p>

    <p>I have the following lenses:<br>

    1. AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1.3.5-5.6 G ED DX<br>

    2. AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8D<br>

    3. Sigma 170-500mm 1:5-6.3 APO DG</p>

<p>As I was trading in the camera I was told that the lenses that I have would only produce a 6.1 megapixel image and that the images would be cropped. Also, it was explained to me that the reasoning behind this is because the D200/D300 have what was referred to slangly as a "half sensor" and that the D700 has a "full sensor." Furthermore, because the camera can sense that the lenses weren't designed for the full sensor that the camera would default the images to 6.1 megapixels and the image would be cropped.</p>

<p>Could someone please explain to me the truth behind this & how this works? Thanks for your time and I'll be looking forward to your replies.</p>

    <p>All the Best!</p>

    <p>~ Joseph.</p>

  3. Hello All,

I'm looking into photography training. I have a lot ot learn, & I have no idea where to begin. I was hoping that you

could provide me with a list of the "best" photography schools.

Or perhaps you could take the time to provide comments on what you've experienced or heard about different

    schools.

I'm even open to recommendations about online training. My mind is open...

Thanks for your time and I'll look forward to your replies.

    All the Best!

    ~ Joseph.

  4. All,

Thank you for your responses. I've just returned from the Great Barrier Reef and had some great dives. I noticed that the photographers that were on board the dive boats utilized Nikon 40s with underwater housings similar to Ikelites. However, the Sea & Sea DX-1G seems like a great camera for reasons mentioned above. The Canon G9 was the most recommended camera being that a lot of divers have had access to this camera.

I rented an Olympus u770SW and although the display was so faint I could barely see it even in the darkest conditions it took pictures that were acceptable to remember the places we dove and snorkeled. Beggars can't be choosers, and I'm certain that the camera was in the condition it was in not because it was of poor quality, but because it was being rented on a daily basis to transient divers who were exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

I thought that the post about starting simple and concentrating on the safety of diving was a good call. However, although I'm not yet like Jacques Cousteau, I do have relative confidence diving under water. Therefore, there I do have a desire to continue to focus toward utilizing my D200 (which is becoming more an extension of me every day) with an underwater housing.

However, I am still attracted to the simplicity of a great camera, such as the Sea & Sea DX-1G, to have a dedicated underwater camera. In fact, being that the prices are so expensive for underwater housings, I'm very tempted to lean in that direction. However, I'm still loyal to my camera and it's something that I?m getting to know and understand so why not continue my learning with this camera under water? Well, one reason is the price?decisions, decisions, decisions?

I did want to add to this forum the following resources which I'm finding to be great resources:

"An Essential Guide to Digital Underwater Photography" by Michael Aw with Mathieu Meur & "An Advanced Guide to Digital Underwater Photography" by Michael Aw with Mathieu Meur

Both of these books are simple and to the point and have provided a wealth of understanding for the beginner like myself.

Again, thanks for all of the replies?you have all provided great counsel and I'm still weighing my decision on what to buy.

    All the Best!

    Joseph D. Sage.

  5. David Jeffery,

Thanks for the reply. I'm leaning towards that same decision too. The one thing that tempted me about the two cameras that I mentioned above is the fact that you can see the image on rather large displays on the back of the camera as you're taking the picture. I guess I'll just have to learn but how do you look through the view finder with your mask on...all the mean while try to maintain buoyancy and keep your subject properly composed? Do housings have some sort of magnifying feature that enables a mask wearing diver to actually see what's in the view finder? Furthermore, the DX 1G has 10 mega pixels...with the capability to shoot in a RAW format. Do you think it puts out lower quality images than say a Nikon D200 in a housing?

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of buying an underwater housing for my Nikon D200 and make the investment. Do you think that's a good idea and what types of housings/accessories would you recommend and why? From what I've read it seems that lenses between 10mm-200mm is optimum. Do you agree with that? What kind of lens domes would you recommend...I've been told that an 8" lens dome is good for those really cool simultaneous underwater/over water shots, however, you may have to get a diopter for it? What should I look for in terms of ports? Aside from recommending a housing, I was curious if you could recommend any types of lighting/strobe rigs.

Can you see I'm at that dangerous stage where I want to just jump into the water shooting, but I can't being that I don't know anything yet and I don't want to blow my money on a compulsive purchase that I'll regret later...

    Thanks for your time.

    All the Best!

    Joe.

  6. Hello!

I am relatively new to photography on dry land and I'm relatively new to diving.

Nonetheless, my passion for both is strong and I anticipate doing both for a

long time to come. With that said I'm looking into what would be a great

underwater camera system. On dry land I shoot with a Nikon D200. I love this

camera and I've recently invested a lot of money in it through lenses and

software. Now I don't mind spending money on something I love, however, I do

    mind spending money unwisely.

My first inclination was to try and find a housing for the Nikon D200 I love so

much. However, after perusing the prices there's no way that I could justify

spending that kind of money on a housing when I could buy a completely new

camera system specifically dedicated to underwater photography. I can only

imagine that the reason that camera housings are so expensive is perhaps there's

a legality issue with what could go wrong and the manufacturer of the housing

being liable for the damages to the camera the housing is supposed to protect?

So what is someone with the heart of an explorer and a passion for photography

to do? Just keep buying tons of gear ;-( ?!? If I'm going to invest in a good

underwater camera I want it to be digital and I want it to withstand over time.

All that being said, I'm interested in the Sea & Sea DX-1G:

    http://www.digideep.com/english/info/html/sea-sea-dx-1g-announced/

Does anyone have any advice and comments about this camera. I'm all by my

lonesome when it comes to buying an underwater camera. There's not much advice

out there (just a lot of advertisements) and I don't know too many

divers/underwater photographers yet. It's not just the DX-1G or bust for me...my

mind is open to good advice and other options.

Anybody have any good stories about positive experiences with certain equipment?

What do you recommend in terms of a camera that can shoot in a multitude of

different underwater environments and provide great pictures...take a licking

    and keep ticking over time?

Could someone please provide me with you recommendations and comments...thanks

    for your time!

  7. To All,

Thanks for the good advice & comments, this is turning into an interesting forum. Although I would really love to utilize my Nikon D200 it's starting to look like it's not the best platform for IR sensing. If anybody has a 100% solution and one that's feasible to using the D200 for IR I'm all ears...

I asked another PhotoNet member via email and I've pasted what he replied below:

    Hi Joe,

In my opinion, digital IR is the way to go. Many years ago, I did use IR B & W film and then hand colour the resulting print, very labour intensive, a very enjoyable way to spend your free time, but life's too short.

With digital all I ever do is to make two exposures, using the camera on a tripod of course, one with a Hoya R72 red filter and the other normally and then using PS amalgamate the two together, that is it, in essence, obviously there can be a lot more to it, but that's up to the individual to decide how far to take it.

I use a Minolta Dimage 7 which has an electronic viewfinder, this I find quite horrible to use for normal photography but it is brilliant when covering the lens with an opaque filter, because the camera can see through it and you can compose your image in the normal way, most SLR* cameras cannot see through these filters and you have to compose your image before you apply the filter, which as you can imagine is a pain in the butt. If you suddenly see a different viewpoint from the one you had first chosen and need to change camera position you have to go through the whole rigmarole again. This camera is old technology and I only use it for IR. I bought mine from eBay for about ?130 including shipping, I don't know what that is in US$ but for a camera that cost ?1000 when new I reckon that's a good and cheap way into IR and you don't have the worry and expense of converting your D200.

*I think I'm right in saying that SLR's (I haven't tried them all) can't see through these dark filters and only cameras that have the electronic viewfinder will do this, I did try using a Canon EOS 5D for IR, it did work but for the reasons I've outlined above and the very long exposures needed, it was very awkward and certainly not as fast to use as the Minolta.

Anyway, I hope that goes some way to answer some of your queries and that you can understand my waffle, if you have any more questions, feel free to email me again, it was great to hear from you.

    All the best,

    Derek.

PS If you do decide to go with the Minolta Dimage 7 I've just remembered that there are two newer models, the 7i and 7Hi, these are nowhere as good for IR, it has to be the 7.

Have a look at the links below, the top one is Daniella T's work, it was seeing her images that fired me up, she has amazing work.

In reference to his email I had started to do research on cameras with electronic viewfinders and found that you can test whether or not a camera can capture IR light waves by taking it into a room without light with a old TV remote (has to be IR) and by looking through the viewfinder of the camera you can see the IR light coming out of the remote as you press the buttons of the remote.

I tried this with a Fuji FinePix S5200 I have and I saw the IR light through the viewfinder. Now it was rather faint and I'm wondering if this simple point and shoot camera may be good for experimenting with IR photography. According to Derek, the Minolta DiMAGE 7 seems to be so good it has created a cult following of IR photographers. Any comments?

I'd still prefer to utilize my Nikon D200, however, I'd be happy if I could take IR images with my Fuji FinePix S5200...

Thanks again and I look forward to all of your replies.

    All the Best!

    Joseph.

  8. Can anyone please tell me what it takes to make great IR images with my Nikon

D200? I'd rather not cheat and use Photoshop. I've been told a slew of

    answers ranging from:

    (a) All you have to do is put a IR filter over your lens and take pictures.

    (b) You have convert your camera to take IR images and it's a timely and

    possibly hazardous endeavor.

Which of these answers closest resembles the truth? I really want to take

digital images, however, I don't want to have to reengineer my camera in the

    process.

    All the Best!

    Joseph.

  9. I'm looking for some professional advice and simply advice from people who have

    used products along these lines:

    http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/lens/lens-wide.html

It's actually a lens converter that screws onto the lens that you're using on

your camera. In my case I'm using a Nikon D200 with a Nikon 18-200mm lens

    that's 72mm wide.

The example that I provided is just that...an example. Does anyone know of any

quality products? Nikon makes wide angle lens extensions:

    http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam/User-Guide/lens/overview.html

But do they work with a Nikon D200 and a Nikon 18-200mm lens (e.g 72mm wide)?

There are several products out there and they don't have to be Nikon...any

    recommendations?

It's a poor man's way of getting around purchasing an expensive wide angle lens.

What I'm curious about is will it work? I realize that there will be shading

and I realize that it will increase the weight of my already heavy camera.

However, I was hoping that someone else may be able to provide what they think

will come about in terms of results.

I've used a similar wide-angle lens extension on a FujiFilm camera with the

    following results:

    http://www.photo.net/photo/5980322

Could someone please provide me with some guidance, comments, and

recommendations? I want to make wide angle and panoramic shots with my D200,

however, I don't have thousands of dollars to drop down on the lenses at this time?

Also of interest to me are:

Any comments on these would be appreciated too.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your replies.

    All the Best!

    Joseph.

  10. I'm new to photography and although I've only just begun to learn, I've already

had a couple of people ask if I could display my images. Their questions began

to spawn questions of my own.

    1. How do I print these images in a quality format where people could appreicate

looking at them? How could I frame these images? Would it be best to have

someone do these things for me and exactly where would I go?

    2. I've seen a couple of shops where people have sold their work. I'm curious

as to how one generates an audience or interest people in buying photographs?

How do you put a price to them?

    3. How do you publish your images? What if I wanted to try and have my pictures

published, how would I do this?

Thanks for your time. I look forward to your posts.

    All the best,

    Joseph.
