Zooms tend to be less sharp than primes... That ought to be it, 'cause my 80's 50mm 1.8f nikkor is much sharper that the 18-55mm DX Nikkor that i also have. So I believe fixed glass is much better at getting detais perfectly, however a zoom lens is much more practical than any prime.

Don't use it if you are shooting architecture, It can give you interesting results however I'm not a big fan of using this function on my D200, however you might come with interesting photos. Although they might not be so useful, use your imagination any time you overlay an image.
By the way you can only overlay NEF files, if you are using jpegs then use the multiple exposure.
Overlay and distort on a computer, that will help also!
Good luck!

The best way to improve is by going basic. Use your camera on full manual, get a manual lens and star shooting. Get used to light and then go for more powerful gear which you might be using better with the acquired experience.

I was in the same position a week ago. However I decided to go for the SB-800, because of its far reach flash. The repeating strobe mode, which can be used at low camera speeds to take interesting photos. however I haven't had the chance to try it properly.
And it looks cooler :)

If I would ship the lens it could take moths for it just to go there. Though optically it still works perfectly, I'll have to find a new "substitute" for this lens.
I'll probably buy an old fashioned 50mm 1.8 AF nikkor. So I can use it with my D-200 as a 75mm.
The really funny thing is that I have a 18-55mm Af DX, which I bought used, and has a true silent wave motor. Optically speaking it's an ok lens, however the 55-200 DX is so much better.
By the way Nikon has made a new DX, my replacement, I'll have to save some money to get it. I believe it's because of the new "D-40x"

Thank you all for your answers.

I've got this lens since November 2006, it was indeed a very good lens in the
beginning. However, last night shooting on a tripod, the autofocus started to
fail. The Silent Wave Motor, became a train engine, and the lens stopped
autofocusing correctly. One thing is for certain, I've never abused from this
lens, I use it on my D-200. And it looks like it wont work properly.
The other annoying thing about my story, is that I live in Guatemala, and there
is no "repair shop" for Nikon...
If I use the manual focus it works all right. But as some of you might know,
this DX lens is not the best at manual focusing. The focus ring is uncomfortable
and way to small...

I live here in Guatemala, the situation is quite ulgy nowadays, but if you are cautious
you can get around. Just be carefull just like in any other place.

Mine has the same problem, however it can be easily evaded by just taking pictures at
400 iso, or at 160. It's quite anoying. It happend to me in the exact same situation.

I have a Nikon D200, it is really awesome. However the price difference with the a100
is quite a thing. Also you can use Minolta lenses on the sony, for they have the same
lense mount. And sony has been putting itself in partnership with carlzeiss, any way,
the new carlzeiss lenses for nikon are made for Film, so those wide apertures, will be
cropped.

The simple solution is to delete iPhoto, and buy Aperture it's the best software you can have to organize your photos, iPhoto really sucks, it takes your time and it's hard to use. DELETE IT or HIDE IT.
Buy Aperture or lightroom, you will be satisfied.
