to Shun: Indeed, the tripod collar is a thing I miss on the 70-300 VR. It is a long lens, especially zoomed out at 300 mm. The VR cannot replace the use of a tripod.
But Nikon has a good tradition not to give lenses a tripod collar in the first batch. Look at the first version of the 80-200 AF.

This discussion is quite interesting!
I hope nobody believes I will replace the 80-200 or the 85 1,4 with the new 70-300 VR. This cannot work. It is a hopefully usefull addition to my set of lenses.
There are situations were the 80-200 is just to heavy and to big to carrie it all day with me. For such situations like trekking I will use the new 70-300 VR - although it is no lightwight lens with 700gr.
But we will all agree that we take our portraits with the 85 1,4.
Shun: Whatshould I do with 10 of the 85 1,4? I want to use my lenses, so one example of the lens should be enough.

Sorry you did not get my ironic.
I cannot buy the 85 1,4 because I already have one. I wanted the 70-300 because there are situations where my 80-200 is to heavy and the 85 is not long enough. And VR is not bad as I am getting older...
Of cause I do not expect miracles by this lens, just good good, sharp and brilliant photos. This should not mean to expect miracles, I hope.

Today, my AF-S VR 70-300 4,5-5,6 G IF-ED (wow, what a name, much more impressing
than just 85 1,4 D for example) zoom lens arrived. I didn't take any photos with
the lens up to now but I played with it on my camera.
I feels very solid build, especially compared to the 18-70, although the real
pro-lenses feel much better.
AF seems quick at my D200, although the max. aperture of the lens is 4,5-5,6.
I did not expect the lens to be that long, but this although means, it lays good
in the hands.
Because I will take the first real pictures with the lens on weekend, I cannot
talk of its optical quality. I just expect Nikon to give the lens a good optical
quality.
I orderd the lens when it was announced, because I needed a smaller and lighter
tele-lens than my 80-200 2.8 and this is the only lens to fit this demand (ok,
there are the older versions of the 70-300 but I wanted AFS and hoped for VR).
I will report of my first session with this lens as well.
That I got this lens today also means Nikon started delivery in Europe (I got
the lens in Berlin). My dealer said they got three of the 70-300 VR.

Hi Bob!
As already said, the D70 allows much better manual settings. If you only shoot in P-Mode, you would not miss this features with the D50.
On aspect for the lenses: Tha 18-70 is AFS the Tamron is not. AFS means much faster focusing and manual focusing is much more easy.
If you will shoot indoors or landscape, you should think about the more wide-angle capacities of the 18-70.
But, best way: Go to your dealer and test both the cameras and the lenses.

To be honest, I do not know realy, but I think better it is.
One reason might be that PSE ask me how to handle Colourmanagement with this files if I open already batched photos with PSE.
And, more substantial, I had some cases were I converted files and continued to work on them.
But may be yes, I might work without.

I am looking for a batch converter to convert my processed TIFF-files
into JPGs. I have PSE 3 but this is very slowly.
On the other hand I have IrfanView but this software does not have
Colour-Management - or I did not found out how to activate Colour
Management.
Do you know a batch converter which could do the job in accurate time
and is not too expensive (freeware welcome!)

I know your problem by my own exprerience. Photoshop is very slowly if you are "manipulating" RAW-Files. Only Nikons own software is even slower. This also means, the workflow speed depends on the software you use - and not only on the speed of your Computer.
But Nikons Capture and Photoshop are only two of the existing RAW-Converters. I had the same problem as you and tried some available RAW-converters - Photoshop, Capture, Bibble, RSE by Pixmantec - and decided for the last one: Pixmantects RAW SHOOTER ESSENTIAL. This Converter is freeware - only a newer version costs, it is easy to use and it is fast - much faster than Photoshop.
If you can upgrade your RAM, you should do it, of course. I am currently having 256 MB RAM and upgrading now to 1 GB. I hope, this also accelerates my Computer...

Waht about to have a test which lens you like more? Isn't there a lens dealer near you?
I personally would vote for the 85 1.4: It is a superb lens and has the same filter size than most of your other lenses.
Using both of the lenses at the D70 means AF is very slow, but it is no problem of the lenses but of the D70.

That sounds very good, may be too good to become true (or not payable). Except, we know nothing about the viewer and: Both sheets say: 11-field AF - but they say not: CAM 2000. May be they introduce an 11-field CAM 900 as the D70 or the F80 has... I don't hope...
But finaly, we have to wait to see.

If you can afford it anyway,get the 80-200. One important aspect, if you use it with the D70: You get a uchbetter view through your viewfinder, which is bad enough at the D70.
70-300 sounds well especially as digital 105-450. But would you shoot serious photos beyound 200mm without a tripod. Using higher ISO-Nr. doesnt fit it because the picture quality suffers. So, I can not see any sense of the 70-300.
If you are at a realy low budget, you can try to get a used 80-200 via eBay or an older 70-210 4-5.6 at ebay or at the grey market. They are smaller than the 70-300sand are said to have better quality.

you forgot to mention the 80-200 2.8. Its a excellent lens and costs only half the price of the 70-200 AFS VR. O.k., it lacks VR and AFS.
May be, one day Nikon makes a 70-200 4 VR AFS. That's what I want. The gap between 55 and 70 doesn't hurt me. You get it with one step back or forward.

Easy answer: Get the 70-200 AFS VR because of AFS, ZOOM and VR.
And - get the 85 1.4 as well. This lens is just superb, all to say. And you can easily carry it with you if the 70-200 is just to heavy or to long...
If only one lens is possible at a time, get the 70-200 because of the more flexibility. May be you can get the 85 1.4 later.

I am looking for a lens to shoot weddings and street photos with the
D70 (at the moment, but I wait am awaiting the D100 successor to
update). I have the 18-70 but I am not realy happy with this lens,
especialy for weddings etc.
Shooting analog, I used the 24-85D, but this lens is digital wheter
enough wide angel nor enough tele - and, lacking AFS, its slow at the
D70.
There are two alternatives as I see:
17-55: It has 2.8, it is said to be very fine, fast AFS, enough wide-
angel and its nearly the 24-85D in all aspects but performance, where
it seems to be much better.
24-120VR: Same less wide angel as with the 24-85, but therefore
enough tele - and VR to compress its slow speed (5.6).
Any suggestions?

Nikon does not only produce the 24-85 3.5-4.5G AFS, but also the 25-85-2.8-4D IF. This lens does not have AFS, but an aperture ring and it produces very good photos. (At least the newer ones as my are very fine, but it seems that Nikon sometimes has problems with newly introduced lenses).
The 24-85D does have a macro 1:2 function, this also helps if you have to limit your equipment.
When I got it, I decided between this lens and the Tokina 28-80, which seems to build very good, but is a little bit to heavy as a travel lens. And there is a real difference between 24 and 28mm. Especially if you go digital one day.

Nice aspect,
but I think its a question of marketing: The same AF-System as the PROs use
AND even using a relatively slow AF-unit as CAM900 gives you a very good AF-speed in combination with AFS. Have you used a Non-AF-lens at the D70? I try to avoid whenever possible.

Go for the heavies!
If its just for this one day - or beter this one picture, rent the best you can get: 70-200 VR or even 200-400 VR.
To rent these or even both lenses a day is much cheaper than buying one of the other lenses mentioned here.

This might be a nice lens, but what meens "compact SWM" Seems that something is diffeent to the normal SWM.
Today, they launched two consumer boddies with consumer lenses, may be - if a D90 or D200 will come, they announce a telezom lens to fill the gab between the 70-200 AFS and this 55-200.
The old but good 80-200 is for me not realy an alternativ for the D70, because the AF on this lens is much to slow (one reason I love my analog F90x).
At the moment, the only lens between the 70-200 and the now new 55-200 with AFS seems to be the 24-120 AFS VR lens. May be I have to get this lens, to get a lens ranging in the 200 mm area - the 70mm of the 18-70 are often to less tele.

My own experience says: It depends:
If you use an Analog Camera, it it full compatible.
Yesterday, I tried to use the SC 17 between the D70 and the SB800 (using SB 800 as Master-Fash), it did not really work. But today, even this combination seems to be compatible. my be, I pressed the wrong buttons yesteray...

I do not know any of the lenses. Instead, I realy enjoy a 24-85 2.8-4. Also a very fine lens. If AF-Speed is of any importance for you, you should get a AFS-lens. If you do not have another wide-angle lens or plan to get one, you should consider getting a zoom with 24mm instead of the 28-105.
But only you know your parameters and only you can decide. If possible, try to compare all three lenses.

Mickey, shooting analogue would mean using two bodies. To use D70 with 18-70 and F90x with 20-35 or 24-85 and have the 80-200 for all cases might be an idea.
Shun, I know what you mean. This summer, I shoot a complete wedding with 14 films. This time will only be the official ceremony, but not the celebration afterwards. I have 1 GB and a 256 MB Flashcard - this should be enough using JPG-Best, i Think.

I wil be the Photographer at a friends wedding. I am expierienced
with my analog-equipment (F90x, 20-35, 24-85, 80-200), but also have
a D70 with the 18-70 and the above mentioned lenses.
Would you do the photos with an analoge Camera or with the digital
D70. They tend to digital, I enjoy shooting digital and had no
problems using that camera. But, of course, I am more experienced
with the analogue-Camera and have with the 20-35 and the 24-85 more
wide-angel than I have with the D70 and the 18-70.
Which equipment would you choose?

You are right! I just wanted to say that Nikon offers more alternatives in this range than Canon does. If it would be lighter, smaller, less expensive, Have AFS and VR, I would want it at once.
But I fear that such a lens would not be much cheaper than the 80-200 2.8 and I can not imagine that Nikon offers several similar lenses.
But what about a 70-300 4-5.6 with VR as the Canon lenses?

Instead of a 70-200 4 you can get a 70-180 macro, a 80-200 2.8 and a 70-200 AFS VR lens. Not bad at all, especially because such a 70-200 4 would get AFS and VR. With this, it would be as expensive as the 80-200 2.8.
And - the 80-200 2.8 is a realy small and liht lens, compared to the 70-20 VR and all the other 2.8-tele-zooms.
But, to be honest, if it would be possible to create a 70-200 4 with AFS and VR, my D70 and I would enjoy. I want a not as heavy and large as the 80-200 tele zoom as addition to the 18-70. To carry the 80-200 is not so much fun, especially the D70 does not fit so good to such heavy lenses as the F90x or other cameras with vertical grip do!

RSP doesn't detect any RAW-files

I have a problem:
My Raw Shooter Premium (RSP) doesn't detect any RAW files, even after two
restarts of my computer. MY Explorer shows my that the RAWfiles are still there.
RSP doesn't even detect the files I already worked.
The most strange: RSE, the free-version detects the RAW-files.
Does it have something to do with Lightroom I also have installed?
