First off, I need to apologize for any sloppy generalizations. While it is clear that Nikon has marketed the 1 series for the mass market, I was merely trying to point out that there are also outstanding features like the AF system that will surely be a boom even for seasoned photographers. Since Nikon has already created two very easy to use cameras with many “smart” features, it just looked like there is an opportunity to build on these strong and essential features, and maybe there will be a third camera (in the future) that is more about being responsive (with direct camera operations) to complement the series that will very much satisfy the experienced photographers too.

While Nikon witnessed an overwhelming disappointment over the announcement of its new Nikon 1 series. There has always been a glimmer of hope for this new system because of its promise of a stellar hybrid autofocus system, one that is supposedly even better than their professional bodies. Unfortunately, the introduction of the Nikon 1 series is marred by Nikon’s ill-fated belief that its investment on a completely new camera system should be focused solely on point-and-shoot users wanting better image quality. The result is a collection of cameras and lenses that have left us all wanting. Now, let’s hope Nikon will salvage a potentially ill-conceived system by looking at the 1 series more with the potential of the Ricoh GR Digital series. Why? Here is a camera with a small sensor and a fixed focal lens, but created primarily to address photographers wanting simplicity in photography. Not mindless point-and-shoot simplicity but rather one devoid of all the clutter of marketing features, trying to justify the camera’s worth. Here is a camera that is clear about its target audience.
Looking at the technology that Nikon has brought to the table with the 1 series, it is not too hard to imagine a camera that has the potential of a cult following. Build on this stellar focusing system. In fact, build on the P7000 body where you have begun to address the basic controls essential to direct camera operations, even in a small camera body. Lastly, give us a real prime lens, why a 10mm f2.8? Why not a 10mm f1.8? I believe that the disappointment of Nikon’s choice of sensor size will quickly be forgotten (or forgiven) when we are able to enjoy photography based on the promise of simplicity in acquiring images, especially with a responsive camera and an accurate focusing system. Give us some sign that you are still a company that is focused on photography.

Are you familiar with this add-on from Get Totally Rad? Don't let the name fool you, the filters and photoshop actions are quite spectacular. I think it may be just what you are looking for.

With the recent announcement of the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 to join the Olympus E-P1 in spear heading the Four Thirds format. Should we be expecting to see a Leica version to be introduced on Sept 9th?

Buy a system that is within your budget and enjoy it. There will always be a better camera
but is it always necessary? Just look at Magnum photographer Alex Majoli who has
personally chosen to use a Point-and-Shoot camera for his incredible work in Iraq. See

He explains his reasoning in the article and describes his technique for overcoming any
short comings of the camera. The D50 you are considering is much more sophisticated
than his Olympus P&S camera.

I guess my question is really directed towards whether it is Nikon's Silent Wave Motor in
the 70-200 VR or the Multi-CAM autofocus sensor module that drives the focusing for the
lens. And whether a lower end camera like the D80 will work well with the lens.
-
Do all cameras drive a lens like the 70-200 VR equally? I am specifically interested in hearing
comments from anyone who have used this lens with the D100, D200 and D80. Thanks in advance.

You might find the following review interesting. http://www.camerahobby.com/Review

There are some great comparisons showing resolutions between the two lenses in
question.
