  1. So here we are, another year over- I thought it would be nice to finish up with a little roundup of what we all think was our best for 2013.

I'm not much for rules, but I'll ask everyone who contributes to this thread to abide by two conditions 1) your entry must be a photograph

you've already shown on one of the 52 preceding weekly W/NW threads, and 2) you can only choose one. Hope that's clear for everyone,

wishing you all a happy and prosperous new year, looking forward to seeing more great work from everyone in 2014. Cheers Lads.

  2. Henry, I can offer an opinion on some of your questions

First off with the 240 I've found you need a separate VF for anything wider than 35mm- the 28mm frame lines are really

not much use. You have a lovely lens selection there, I wouldn't change a thing- there is no real world discernible

difference between the 90 f2.8 and f2, and I can't see the 50 asph making much of a difference either. The 15mm is a

great lens, but will cause vignetting and colour shift around the edges of your files, however, there's a free program called

cornerfix that will take care of that. As to jpegs, they're accurate and nice right out of the camera, but really, raw is the

way to go. Leica M raw files are DNGs, and easily convertible/workable with any editing software. I've found the color

output from the 240 to be accurate and perfectly usable. Hope any of this helps.

  3. Thought it would be cool to run a run "best of W/NW 2013" on December 31st. Feel free to contribute, or not- the only criteria is that all

submissions must have been a part of a weekly W/NW thread from this last year. It'd be nice to see what everyone considers their best

shot, given the high standards we all aspire to each week. So maybe start figuring out the one you like best from the last 12 months.

  4. SLR sales are definitely in decline, probably because of continued improvements in sensor/lens/software output in smaller bodies.

Phones have nearly killed the compact camera market, and continue to improve in areas where they were traditionally weak (resolution, sensor performance in low light). I don't think we're at the end of it yet, more like at the end of traditional thinking in camera body design in relation to file quality/size, and what the files are used for. One thing I can't understand is the continuing use of mechanical shutters, in any camera body- I'm pretty sure it's been possible to do that right on the sensor for a long time now (I don't think phones have shutters), but it seems old design habits die hard. Ergonomics are obviously a factor also. Medium format and SLRs will push further into niche use based on their suitability for particular uses. You can probably shoot an ad campaign for a magazine with a fuji x-whatever, but you wouldn't be using those files on billboards. At the end of the day, it'll end up the way it always was- people will use whatever cameras they need for what they need them for. And the manufacturers will adapt to the market like they have since the beginning. All good though, right?
