Because I was travelling continuously by car, many of my holiday pictures were taken around lunch time. I used ND8 plus Polarizer filter to compensate of the harsh African midday sunlight.
I had weird results: the camera always underexposed the pictures (which I did not realize initially because of the bright sun making the LCD screen difficult to see). I needed to manually overwrite the settings. Because many pictures were underexposed I had to photoshop many of them. That wasn't easy either and often I went B/W with the channel mixer, or even used the "graphic pen":... But one good thing came out of this:the skies were beautiful. The blue of the sky was extremely dark and the clouds extremely white, with all the details preserved in the clouds.(More than a Pol filter alone would have done). What experience did you have? I want to see your pictures.

Ratings are only a rough idea of what people think of your pictures. I found that my ratings did improve over the last 6 months after I went for photo lessons and I think they are not a bad way for assessing ones abilities. The ratings become more accurate when many people rate a picture. But just like there are those 3 rating terrorists, there are also the happy 7 raters, who will give a 7 for a bad picture.(And nobody complains about them!) :-D
