people enjoy teaching and when photo.net launched photocritique circles some years back it was a smashing success -- too successful in that it took a lot of time to group people e.g. people of varying abilities with others to make a good group based on peoples applications Unfortunately there were not enough resources then to keep up with that. I think it would make a very attractive additional feature for photo.net, especially if it required folks to subscribe in order to join.

charles have your run tracert photo.net?

I walked around CES and thought I would point to some things I thought would be interesting to people.
<br>
<a href="http://www.eye.fi/a-wireless-memory-card/"> Eye-Fi</a> a 2GB SD card that also will wirelessly connect to a specified wi fi network and upload your bits to the net.
<br>
There was also an impressive new display from samsung upon which to show your images -- It was a <a href=http://www.eye.fi/a-wireless-memory-card/">150 inch plasma display</a> from Panasonic that had 8 megapixel resolution.
<br>
Also hitachi, panasonic and etc. Also had amazingly thin LCD and Plasma Displays.
-
is it working now? for you
-
brian told me this was going to be fixed last weekend...
so I will ask what the hold up is.
-
can you explain where in the process things are failing?

The new HP printers are worth looking at: I'll be writing an article soon and hopefully they will send us a B9180 to review...
For those that can't wait here is Wilhelm's
<a href="http://www.wilhelm-research.com/hp/PhotosmartProB9180.html">
review</a> Looks quite promising
-
HP has asked us what sort of articles, reviews, contests or other
programs we could do on photo.net to raise the awareness of their
higher end products ... e.g. there largeformat designjet printers
and some of the higher end smartphoto printers.
Does anyone have any suggestions for prizes that woudl be attractive
to folks?
Is there any comparisons you woudl like to see and if so which ones
and would anyone want to work on that.
Any suggestion at all woudl be appreciated.
-
After selecting a file and attempting to upload I received an error message that stated.
0 file uploaded... this was near instantaneous so no file was uploaded.
Then a subsquent message that said it was unable to read the image file.
Is there some setting I need to select to allow it to read the fle?
-
General comments:
Couple thigns I foudn.
If you select several files; the interface seems to allow you to edit an individual photos caption, but when you start editing the entry disappears.
I uploaded a photo which it rejected as not the proper format.
after that point I couldn't no do much of anyhing with the flash program
The interface when it comes up is not obvious in terms of how one might use it. Migth do with some text around it saing browse to pick files...
-
I think we should have a photo contest.
In fact that is somethign we haven't done for years.
What sorts of prizes interset folks:
software,
hardware,
calibration equipment,
prints?

I hope so. I think his concern recently has been that the stratification of the directory system brian did to eliminate the hundred gazillion redirects made it difficult for him to understand where the articles actually are in hte directory structure. If we document that interface more as it stands I think it will be possible to get more and better content from people.

From the Press Release by Nikon:
Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce pricing and availability for its
highly anticipated D2X professional digital SLR camera. The camera
will begin shipping on February 25, 2005 with a suggested street
price of $4999.95 (MSRP $6299.95). Designed as a truly versatile
workhorse camera for many professional disciplines, the 12.4 million-
pixel D2X blends for the first time the high levels of resolution
commercial clients demand with superb image quality, color
consistency and class-leading speed. The D2X can comfortably shoot
full resolution 12.4 million pixel images at 5 frames per second (up
to 21 consecutive JPEGS and 15 NEFs), and when the situation demands
yet faster frame rates, the D2X has a unique 6.8 megapixel 'High
Speed Cropped Image' mode that boosts the shooting rate to 8 frames
per second (up to 35 consecutive JPEGs or 26 NEFs) by cropping the
number of pixels used on the sensor to create the image.
The D2x also supports a range of exclusive options that greatly
enhance the camera?s capabilities. Nikon?s newly introduced WT-2A Wi-
Fi transmitter achieves full wireless remote camera control and
transmission, while the revolutionary i-TTL Speedlight technology
included in the D2X ensures radical new possibilities in wireless
creative lighting.
Nikon has also announced pricing and availability for its
all-new AF-S VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED super-telephoto lens that
features Nikon's remarkable
Vibration Reduction (VR) technology. Initial deliveries of the lens
will begin in January of 2005, with an MSRP of $5,999.00. The AF-S
VR Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED is the first lens to incorporate Nikon's
new Nano-Crystal AR Coat, which demonstrates superior anti-reflective
properties to virtually eliminate ghost and flare to provide clear
and vivid images when shooting under powerful sunlight or indoors
under spotlights.

Kodak Unveils First-of-its-Kind Wireless Digital Photography System
at 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show
New KODAK EASYSHARE-ONE Digital Camera, Wi-Fi-Enabled EASYSHARE
Printer Dock Plus Expand Boundaries of Picture Sharing
LAS VEGAS, January 5 ? On the eve of the 2005 International Consumer
Electronics Show (CES), Eastman Kodak Company introduced a
groundbreaking wireless digital photography system, giving people the
freedom to share pictures whenever and wherever they wish.
At the heart of the system is the new KODAK EASYSHARE-ONE zoom
digital camera, which provides people with extraordinary control over
how and when they share pictures. The device is the first of its
kind, allowing people to e-mail pictures directly from the camera via
Wi-Fi; to view online albums in the KODAK EASYSHARE Gallery (formerly
Ofoto) on the camera; to store and organize up to 1,500 favorite
pictures for instant display on its high-resolution, 3-inch touch
screen LCD; and to take vibrant still pictures and full-motion video.
No other digital camera gives people such an extensive ability to
take, organize, share and print their pictures.
The same KODAK Wi-Fi card that provides the EASYSHARE-ONE camera with
wireless capabilities can now be used with the recently introduced
KODAK EASYSHARE Printer Dock Plus. In addition to printing real KODAK
pictures in as little as 60 seconds without a computer, it can now
transfer pictures from a docked camera or memory card to networked
computers throughout a home. With the card, the Printer Dock Plus can
also receive pictures for printing from Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, PDAs,
and other devices without requiring them to be in the same room.
?Innovations such as the EASYSHARE-ONE camera are central to our
digitally oriented growth strategy,? said Bernard Masson, president,
Digital & Film Imaging Systems; and senior vice president, Eastman
Kodak Company. ?Kodak is at the leading edge of defining how wireless
advancements can further simplify the consumer digital photography
experience. We?re discovering new ways to help people enjoy and share
their pictures ? anytime, anywhere.?
Kodak leverages a wide range of wireless standards, such as
BLUETOOTH? technology, infrared, Wi-Fi and cellular networks, to make
it easy for people to view, share and print pictures instantly
without the use of cords, cables or even computers. All can be viewed
during CES in the Kodak Booth #31400, on the second level of the Las
Vegas Convention Center?s South Hall.
Kodak Innovations on Display
In addition to highlighting the EASYSHARE-ONE camera and Printer Dock
Plus, Kodak is also showcasing multiple innovative products and
services during CES, including:
New EASYSHARE Z-Series digital cameras, which help everyday picture
takers get closer, better, more creative shots through extended zoom
lenses.
The new EASYSHARE Picture Viewer, a pocket-sized ?digital photo
album? that fits in the palm of a hand to share favorite pictures on
the go.
KODAK Mobile Service, whose subscribers have anytime, anywhere access
to their digital photos and phone-captured video, using their mobile
phone handsets or Web-connected computers.
KODAK Picture Maker kiosks with wireless transfer technologies for
printing real KODAK pictures in seconds at tens of thousands of
retail locations worldwide.
At CES, three KODAK products ? the EASYSHARE DX7590 zoom digital
camera, the EASYSHARE Printer Dock Plus, and the KODAK Picture Maker
G3 Digital Print Station ? received Innovations 2005 Design and
Engineering Awards, sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association
and endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America. Chosen
by a panel of independent industry designers, engineers and
journalists, these awards honor superior design and engineering among
the year?s most technologically advanced products.
Additional show-related news, photography, and related information
are available at http://www.kodak.com/go/ces.
The award-winning KODAK EASYSHARE consumer digital photography
system ? consisting of cameras, software, printer docks and camera
docks, inkjet and thermal papers, and accessories ? makes it simple
for anyone to take, organize, share, and print high quality digital
pictures. In the J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Digital Camera
Satisfaction StudySM evaluating performance, connectivity, cost and
appearance, KODAK EASYSHARE cameras in the US$200-399 and US$400-599
price ranges ranked highest in customer satisfaction. More

SEOUL, Korea ? October 20, 2004 ? Samsung Electronics unveils the
world's first mobile phone (model: SCH-S250) equipped with a 5-
megapixel camera. Just one year after the introduction of its first 1-
megapixel camera phone and 3 months after its first 3.2-megapixel
camera phone, Samsung proves its technological prowess again with
this revolutionary product.
<br>
The CCD (charge-coupled device) camera and high-sensitivity flash
allow the user to take the same quality pictures one gets from a top-
end digital camera. Similar to Samsung's premium grade camera phones,
the S250 can also function as a camcorder. The 92MB onboard memory
can store up to 100 minutes of video (320x240), and a 32MB auxiliary
memory is included as a standard feature. The shutter speed is as
fast as 1/1,000 th of a second, allowing the user to film beautiful
landscapes as well as subjects as close as 10 cm. The S250 can be
connected to a TV to display video during shooting or to show footage
that has already been recorded in the mobile phone.
<br>
The S250 comes with a unique "stretch" design, reminiscent of the
futuristic phones seen in the movie The Matrix . The high-quality
camera lens and LCD remain covered and protected when the phone is
closed, and when it is stretched open, the product has the feel of a
regular digital camera.
<br>
Samsung has also set a new standard in mobile phone display
technology. Until now, mobile phones had been equipped with LCDs
capable of 262,000-color resolution. The S250 boasts a QVGA TFD-LCD
(Thin Film Diode-Liquid Crystal Display) that has previously been
adapted only for top-end TVs and desktop monitors. The display can
reproduce 16 million colors, over 60 times the color compared to
existing mobile phone displays, all the hues found in nature; thus,
QVGA resolution has been referred to as ?true color.?
<br>
Samsung has also taken voice recognition to a higher level by
introducing text-to-speech (TTS) conversion. Now the user can listen
to incoming text messages or the prepared ?to-do? list rather than
having to read them.
<br>
The S250 supports high-image-quality games and 3D sound effects. If a
call is received in the middle of a game, the user can restore the
game later and resume play.
<br>
Other advanced functions in the S250 include an MP3 player, mobile
banking capability and 64-polyphonic sound.
<br>
According to President & CEO Kitae Lee of the Samsung
Electronics, ?Our development of a 5-megapixel camera phone will
elevate the competitiveness of the Korean mobile phone industry. At
the same time, I would like to see our technological advances
contribute to the growth of the global mobile phone industry and
create a more convenient way of life.?
President Lee adds, "It's very important to lead the trends through
continuous introductions of innovative new products. Samsung
Electronics possesses the world's leading technologies and state-of-
the-art design capabilities, and we are committed to developing
distinctive products for our customers."
<br>
Samsung cooperated with the Japan-based Asahi Pentax, one of the most
respected camera lens providers in the world, to develop a camera
module customized for the mobile phone. This partnership began in the
first-half of 2003.
<br>
The SCH-S250 will be available in the Korean market this October.
