  1. I have d50 (6MP) and d80 (10MP) and there is no big difference, maybe for your start and for family shots it's even better d40. I made a lot of A3 format prints with D50 and they were all ok. There is a huge step from d50 to d80. I normaly used about 50-60 % settings with d50, and only about 20% settings for d80 (do you really need control for 3 flashes, croping and filtering in camera insteed on computer??...) I had d 50 for about 2 years took about 15000 photos and tought that transfering from d50-d80 would be an easy step-infact it is, but if you really wan't to take all the advantages that d80 brings you will soon noticed that as an amateur photographer without studio you wouldn't noticed any huge difference between d40 and d80-just in your budget as you said
