  1. Hi,

I am an amateur photographer from Southern, Ontario and I am looking

for other outdoor photographers in and around Ontario to meet and

possible plan a couple of trips during the summer months to photograph

the physical landscape. I am young (31) and in good shape so

extensive hiking, and canoeing is not a problem. I'm just tired of

traveling with friends that are hikers/canoeist who don't understnad

the time and effort that must be taken with taking an image (I call it

the 'just take the picture' syndrome). Anyway I would like to get a

ring of fellow amateur photographers in and around Ontario who can

help each other out with information and directions and possible

guides when travelling in their perticular area. If this sounds

interesting please drop me a line.

    Thanks,

    John

  2. Hi,

I'm an advanced amateur and I'm looking for a lense wider than my

present 28-70mm Nikon. I shoot landscape and some portrature. I

will be using it on my 801s and FE-2 so AF is not that important. I

like the idea of a zoom 20-30mm but I would like to know about the

image quality and workmanship. The other affordable option is a used

Nikkor 24mm f2.8 but I will be sacrificing the extra focl lengths.

I would like to know if anyone has used this lense and what they think

of it? I say a review in a mag. and it looked pretty good -

camparable to the Sigma 18-35mmAF. But I'm weary of these reviews

because I have never heard a bad thing about a lense.....since they

need the manufacturers for advertisement, they are not going to bash

any of their manufacturers and/or products even it is poor quality.

Well thanks in advance for any information

  3. I live in Southern Ontario and visited Newfoundland on business and

was taken back we (my bride and I) returned for our honeymoon!

Although not travelled too heavy NFLD is the gem of the east.

Gros Morne is a UN recognised national Park and is breathtaking!

Western Brook Pond is espicially scenic. If you are in good shape

the hike around the rim of the fiord will present amazing photo

oppourtunities. To the North there are many little fishing villages

that seen to be unchanges since the 1940's.

The east has St. Johns and the character of the city and the

colourful houses and the view from the lookout. if you are there

before July you will see Iceburgs and boats will tour you around

while you take pic's. Whale watching is a must out of Bulls Bay

(South of St. Johns). We used O'Neals (or some Irish name) but we

saw several humpbacks and I actually caught a full breach!...On film!!

All said, I will definately go back if the offer presents itself.

the people are friendls and the landscape if beautiful and so

different than the reat of Canada and the East Coast US.

  4. Werner,

I live in Burlington (about 40 minutes from the falls).

Grey Hound? That is a terrable way to see the area. You have to get

off the beaten path. The falls are nice but so is the whirl pool and

areal car which is located towards Niagara on the lake on the Niagara

River. If you are comming from Germany...In October>>>you must plan

to do to Kitchener/Waterloo for October Feast! It's out little

Germany. But feel free to e-mail for some more information. I know

of other very nice areas in the vicinity. Where are you planning to

    stay on your trip Toronto?

Well good luck and hope to hear from you, or anyone who is interested

    in the area.

  5. Ah yes the age old question...to zoom or not to zoom?

    I am a Nikon user and I do own both. I have a 801s,and a FE-2 c/w

MD12. I have both Af and MF lenses. I presently own the

    Nikon 55mm f2.8 micro, 28-70mmAF f3.5-4.5, & 70-210mm AF f4-

5.6....which I am replacing with the Nikon 75-300ED.

I use the 28-70mm and the 55mm 75% of the time. The 28-70 is very

sharp and light and allows me to crop. Although it's not f2.8 but I

usually do not shoot open anyway...and it keeps the cost of filters

down. I buy 62mm and use step-down rings to 52mm.

Although I like my 28-70mm I love my 55mm Micro. It is tack sharp

and would put it up against anything (quality and workmanship). It

produces fine sharp prints and focuses to 1:1, an extension ring is

recomended to increase your subject distance, but that's later.

I plan on getting a Nikon 24mm f2,8 AIS or AI this winter. I shoot

mainly landscape and use the lower range, therefore I'm not going to

spend $$$$ on a lense I use 25% of the time.

    Anyway that's my $.02 worth.

  6. Bravo,

I applaud your effort. I could not do it myself and have nothing but

admiration for those who do. I personally don't even make enough $$

to cover my equipment costs but as long as their subsidised.

Anyway, I know that you are entering a very competitive field with

people who have been doing this for many years. May I add a

suggestion? Try subsidising you nature photography with weddign

photography. I do severay every year just for the equipment $$. My

wife cut me off after I went to a garage sale and came home with a

Omege D-3 enlarger. I have had friends who have done the same and

have done into weddings full time.

But whatever you decide good luck! And enjoy!!!

  7. Hi,

I use the Cokin filter system with my Nikon 28-70mm and have no

problems what so ever other than getting the filters into the holder.

I sometimes just hand hold the filter in front of the lense if I

don't want to take my hood off and put on the ring, filter holder

    ect...

  8. Hi ,

I personally use an Orion II 1/2 moon pack and for longer trips I put

into a med. backpack and take it out when I get close to the area I

plan to photograph. I sometimes hang it on a tree (if not too many

people around) and come back to get it.

    Anyway I use a M.E.C. (Mountain Equipment Co-op.) pack with 4

compression straps on each side. On the botton there is a pocket for

I assume was a waterbottle but I put one the my Bogen legs into it

and tightem the compression straps securely around it. The packs

also has a waist strap and it is very easy to carry around.

I have used this set-up in canoe trips in Northern ontario and day

    hiking in Newfoundland.

  9. Robert,

    I'm from Burlington, Ontario.

I personally think the Dundas/Burlington/Milton area is fabulous for

fall colours. Unfortunately, we have had a dry summer and some of

the leaves are brown. There is Dundas valley (very nice spot -

maples and an escarpment as a backdrop) Tews and Websters falls in

    Flamborough/Dundas. A spectacular falls (actually 2 of them)dropping

off of the Niagara escarpment into the valley. Nice pic in the

valley...takes some walking but it's worth it!! North of Burlington

there is Milton and the escarpment (Rattlesnake Pt and Nount Nemo).

    Very nice!

If anyone is interested in checking out any of these sites, please

drop me a line...it's a great excuse to get out and take come pic's.

Or if you know and southern Ontario Jewel, I'd love to know of any

    new places.
