  1. If you Build your own backdrops, light boxes, etc. you can save alot of $$$. Here's a link to a downloadable book with lots of good information. http://www.software-cinema.com/tinkertubes/

Also, do some internet research for DIY projects for photography. It's amazing what you can make with foam core board and PVC tubing. Bleached or unbleached muslin by the yard from fabric stores is cheap, comes in wide sizes, makes great backdrops and can be dyed or painted easily. You can also look for inexpensive light kits on Ebay. Also, as stated above, natural light is great for portraits. Use it whenever poss.

    hope this helps.

  2. Thanks everyone for answers. I have tried the paper on the heavyweight matte setting. I have another photographer friend with a 1270 and she has used the paper extensively and that is the setting she uses. I did get a profile from Cone Editions that is custom for the watercolor paper and Epson 1280 inks. It seems to work ok but the colors come out a bit bright and I do see the mottling in the black areas. I'll probably play around with the settings and see what I come up with.
  3. I bought some Radient white Epson Watercolor Paper to use with my

Epson 1280 printer and the instructions say to set the media type to

Archival Matte paper. I don't have a setting for Archival Matte

    paper.

I used the Heavyweight matte paper setting and the picture came out

fine but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for other

media type settings to use that would be better.

  4. I read an article many years ago about making one by buying a door peephole (can be found at any hardware store) and mounting in a hole cut in a lenscap. It's worth a try as it wouldn't cost much.

  5. The AF assist illuminator on my D100 no longer lights up. I have the

menu option set to "on". I have been using the camera with an SB-

80DX and I understand that the AF assist will turn itself off when

the flash is attached but it will not light without the flash

attached either. Anyone else having this problem? Perhaps I'm just

    missing a setting?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

  6. I'm not sure which Stroboframe it is as I got it in a box of equipment that I won on 'that auction site'.

    I don't think it's a pro tho.

I've got the cord on order. I went ahead and got the longer one just in case I feel the need to extend the flash further away from the camera.

    Thanks for all the responses.

  7. I really admire Emil Schildt's painted with light portraits

    (http://www.photo.net/shared/community-member?user_id=526277 ) so I

decided to try the technique. I used a Nikon D100 instead of

traditional camera because I was curious how the photos would come

out in digital rather than film. My model wasn't the most

cooperative so I was only able to get a few shots in a make shift

studio setup then I cleaned out all the extranious stuff in Paint

Shop and recolored it a bit. I'd be interested in any comments or

suggestions on improvement. Thanks so much.<div>0054cV-12654784.jpg.8f38162976d071d904a6bd97ffab2445.jpg</div>

  8. I got one this past Sat. morning. I had it overnighted on Friday from Cameta Camera in New York. Can't get them locally either and at some stores there is a waiting list. The price was the same as locally and I spent less on overnight shipping than I would have in state taxes. I highly reccomend these folks. Nice service.
  9. I bought a set of his plans for an 8x10 field camera. It's just a

basic set of blueprints. No instructions included but they are done

    well and quite understandable.

I also bought the book Building A Large Format Camera from Jon

Grepstad. It's got step by step instructions for building a 4x5

monorail camera with a section on how to upsize to an 8x10. I highly

reccomend this book if you're thinking about building from scratch.

    Here's the URL: http://home.online.no/~gjon/jgcam.htm

You can also download plans for an 8x10 field camera from this site.

He's got step by step instructions with drwaings and photos.

  10. I was having the same "rip apart" problem with a 545 holder I had

bought used some years ago. I thought it was because there was a

little bar piece that was missing inside so I replaced that and it

still did the same thing. I took the darn thing apart many times and

could never figure out the problem. There is nothing bent in there I

can see. It's a real head scratcher. My solution...I took my chances

and I bought another used holder off of Ebay and the newer one works

    fine.
