This photo was a bit of a group effort, with a friend seeing the image
and another standing still through a long exposure.

Thanks for the comments. The lighting was purely fortuitous, although the desert just after sunset can give amazing light and very clear air. For the rest, it is simply two vehicles' headlights, and I simply shot what I saw. I could probably improve things a bit in the detail using some sort of local contrast enhancement, although it is a very noisy image - small sensor and long exposure.

This is one of the images that happens to you. I had been working
all day sampling groundwater from wind pumps, when these appeared
out of the darkness in front of the vehicles. All the light that I
had was provided by two vehicles' headlights.
