What lens did you have. What do you want it to do?
Lots of affordable wide angle out there, you can pick up a 70-300 pretty cheap. Just buy for what you want to do. All of us will have different opinions.

If its less than $50 like you said, might as well go for it.
If you are trying to go wide though, get a zoom that starts at 18mm.
Don't for get, with Nikkon DSLR's you have to time the focal length by 1.5 times.

It's fine with large lenses on it.
Manual mode can be awkward, 99% of the time I soot on aperture anway.
My batteries last about 700 image on large / fine, the more you review your images the faster you drain it.
It's a great camera and the $$ you save compared to the D70, you can put in to lenses, speed lights and so on....

How to make a "home-made" grey card?

The inside of my camera bags are 18% grey as most are. your best bet is to meter off that or just buy a card from your local camera shop for a couple bucks and save your self the time, and have the piece of mind knowing that it is a "real" grey card.
