Your 5D2+14-105 are all the tools you need for this job with a high ISO and IS you will have no problem unless its really dark, f2.8 is nice but for most group shots you may need a bit more depth of field.

My most used lens 24-105L and a prime telephoto so 300 f2.8 IS.

I don't know anything about the D90 but have a 400D it takes great images, its good upto iso 400 but above that it starts getting a fair bit of noise.
I assume you have no Nikon glass so I would go with the canon use the 2 lens you have got and see if you like the camera before you get any new glass.

I have the sigma 28 F1.8 and have used it on my 400D for a number of years, its a great lens and focuses very close with excellent IQ.

Peter I don't know anything about Quantum but on my canon in manual mode using 430ex flash. The camera and flash automatically sort the exposure of the subject leaving me able to set the desired background exposure using the manual controls.

sounds like a sound choice, have fun.

I think the early efs 18-55 were very pretty poor(350D genration), but the later ones aren't to bad considering the cost, mine is capable of a decent image.

I think any new digital SLR is going to give you enough resolution to print A2, I've printed a few from my canon 400D with excellent results even with the kit lens. If its not wide enough you could always stitch images together and produce some panoramas. If you have some pentax glass maybe you should consider there digital SLR's I hear they are very good.

I can't see any reason why canon would want to update this lens its pretty much perfect as it is, I suppose they would be more likely to update the 24-70 with IS.

I have the sigma 28 1.8 and its pretty sharp wide open I used it all the time on my 400D as a standard prime, I don't tend to use it much on my 5D2 unless I need fast wide angle. On the build front the foucs has jammed a couple of times but taking it off and putting it back on the camera has sorted it.

since I got the 24-105+5D2 I never use my fast primes I find the IS with high ISO more than makes up for the extra couple of stops of a fast prime. Unless you need the thin DOF the 24-105 is superb the IQ is as good as my primes. Maybe I've just got a superb copy of this lens but unless I need wide angle of telephoto it stays on my 5D2.

Geo, firstly its not there fault you have already done the album twice, I think you should of put the improved images in the album you had done the work, I don't really understand why you did not use them. In my opinion I think you need to get the album re-done for them maybe you can come to some compromise over the cost, the album they have must have some value to them maybe you could split the difference over the cost of the new album.

I have the sigma 70-300apo and its not a bad lens for such a low price, its pretty sharp at 300mm(see below), the colour and contrast leave a lot to be desired but you can tweak that stuff in post. For me its just a stop gap till I can afford something better but if your buget is tight it might be worth looking at.

why don't you keep your 40D and see if you can pick up a cheap second hand 5D I'm sure the second hand price will continue to fall, then you have the best of both worlds for not to much cash.

how about Chris H(SoCalif).

well I've just gone 400D to 5Dm2, the advantages for me are the much better controls custom settings, control wheel on the back/my lens make much more sense 17-40,24-105etc.
The high ISO performance is fantastic I can shoot indoors with the F4 lens no problems I think I get a 2 maybe 3 stops over the 400D, I have some very un-scientific noise tests in my folio.
The resolution is impressive but I've never printed above A2 and my 400D was fine for this so not such a big deal for me but if you tend to crop your images or make big prints then it could be useful.
In answer to your question for me it’s a great body my 400D feels like a toy now , so well worth the upgrade.

Can't help with Singh-Ray filters as I've not used them but the lee system is excellent, a huge improvment over the cokin filters, I would go for the 4x6 size, the standard cokinP holder is only good down to 28mm(35mm eqv). Even the cut down one is only good down to 24mm but you can only use 1 filter.

It might be best to use the equipment you have allready got, before spending more money on lenses, if the 18-50 works I wonder if its 50D you have not a 5D.

-

They make great cameras and great lenses so I would say not much, if I had the money the tilt and shifts would be on my shopping list.

-

Its good that Nikon are making great usable cameras that photogrphers want and can afford, as canon lose market share they will drop there prices and work on better cameras. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with there current range but a signifcant price drop at the higher end would be nice.

I have recently got 24-105 twice now I've forgotten to switch the IS off when using the tripod. Both times I've struggled to merge the bracketed images due to I assume the IS moving the image. All the images were sharp just would not line up properly.
