I'm what you might call 'a hands on' person. I learn more from actually doing than I do from reading (often the material is dry and boring and puts me to sleep). My suggestion to you is to invest in a decent editing program and then spend time playing around with it. Learning the basics isn't too difficult and if you need help with the more advance features then perhaps getting a book on the specific program would be a good idea. Good luck.
