This is really nice - great job, thank you:)

Congratulations; this must be alot of fun for you. Best regards, Inger:)

Hello Gisela, I understand what you are talking about. I think you should do what you feel comfortable with, keep on commenting on other peoples photos and you will feel comfortable with giving ratings in no time:) And - if you don`t get any response to some of your photos you can delete them, upload them again and request a new critique, perhaps at another time of the day like Ian suggested. Best regards, Inger:)

Do a little more commenting and rating on other peoples photos and you will probably receive more attention to your own work - that is how it usually works here:)

Ideas for backgrounds; this is what I have seen others use; the fireplace nicely decorated, inside a barn/or something that looks like a wall from a barn with some details that show it is Christmas or lots of boxes wrapped as presents... Just some ideas:)

Well said, Nicole - I agree with you:)

"but I like to see the progress that someone has made - all the little steps that get to the most recent best work."
Maybe this could be a new presentation of yours, with your own photos, where you offer your advice and ideas?
When I give someone a critique I think that I am giving it to this person (and not so much anyone else) and if he/she wants to delete the photo, it`s Ok, because I know that he/she has read my critique. Maybe a "learning"-presentation is something you could do? I`m just throwing out an idea:):)

Well, I have experienced this also but I do think it`s OK. I like to watch other peoples portfolios with an understanding of this being that persons best work till now:)

It would be nice to see more sport-photos here. But this is an international website and the sports that people find interesting may vary from country to country - at least a little, I think. In my country I would say that soccer, biking, motorsports and handball are amongst the interesting ones at this time.

Nice work. You can put your photos in the critique forum and disable the possibility of rating them - but then you would not get any ratings at all. I guess you have to decide what you prefer most.

I agree that different aspects of a photo can happen by accident - not everything can be planned or decided upon. I also think that burned-out highlights will work in some situations (and I wrote that) but I did think that this was something one usually should avoid - as a general guideline, if you will. My experience from other websites is also this - that burned-out higlights are being looked at as a negative thing in general.

The guidelines of composition excist for a reason and I think they often are important if you don`t want your photo to tilt left or right. Or to prevent the foreground or background from being "a waste of space". But this should not be too rigid and personal taste matters also, I think.

To me it sounds like the light is too harsh. Either the lights needs to be further away from the flower, lower in intensity or you need something to diffuse the lights more. With backlit objects you may also need something to light up the front of the flower so that this doesn`t get too dark, like a reflector. I have done this myself, using the sun and without a reflector(Orange Gerbera flower:)

Photographs document life and history - why should not signs (and other text) be a part of that, they are all around us:)

The best way is what Charles said, I think, you just need to be more active yourself and comment on other peoples photos and I`m sure you will get more comments on yours:)

"..blown out highlights... so what, for it may be pleasing to someone."
I thought that blown out highlights was something one should not do in photography, it means that the exposure is not correct. This was more the case before than it seems to be now, I think. It is suitable for some situations, if it enhances the photo - but often it doesn`t.

When you express your opinion (and that is what the rating system is about) you are being subjective and not objective.
what camera do you carry with you everyday?
