1.
Hello,
Can anyone recommend any old (classic, antique, out-of-print) books on photography that are either written about lighting or discuss in any way details of lighting via lighting equipment, lighting technique or theory etc....... I have several books already especially PICTORIAL LIGHTING 1935 by William Mortensen. I am aware he has multiple others as well. I also have Lighting for Portraiture by Walter Nurnberg 1969, Studio Portrait Lighting by Herbert Lambert 1940 and Professional Portrait Lightings by Charles Abel 1947. William Mortensen references others photography publications that are not necessarily books such as camera craft; I am interested in obtaining these type of trade publications as well. My goal is to find how the classic masters lit their images with the equipment that they had available at the time, as well as understanding what that equipment was. Much the same as we can easily reference lighting charts or setups today. I am very interested in classic hollywood lighting a la George Hurrell and also the work of Yousuf Karsh. I do have a copy of Hollywood Portraits by Roger Hicks. I am looking for something that is more definitive, this book appears as though he looked at classic images and postulated how they were created. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you for the respone. However I guess i left out one very important point. I am looking to do this all as cheaply as possible. I have seem the prices of the commercial made area light softboxes, butterflies, overheads, as well as a whole assortment of aluminum frames. The Chimera F2 10'x20' is $10,000. Enough PVC pipe to build my 6'x12' frame can be bought for not more than $100. A roll of Rosco Cinegel grid cloth runs about $105. Throw in another $100 for the reflective backing fabric and the entire box can be made for not more than $300 (vs $10,000!). Aluminum frames that hold butterfly fabric in that size start around $500 and that does not include the fabric which is another $300 to $600. Furthermore, OverHead Frames and butterflies are technically Light PANELS, not softboxes, so controlling spill becomes an issue which is why I want to build a softbox. I am looking to use PVC for price, not structural integrity. PVC does bend slightly but it is always possible to simply use a thicker grade pipe which would still be much cheaper that aluminum. IF you add enough cross supports at key places and keep the overall weight of box to a minimum, bending should not be a problem. Even if it were a problem, i think i could live with it and make it work for only spending $300. I know that both rosco and LEE make a silver reflective material that I could use to creating the backing. However my question was if anyone knew what suitable WHITE material could be used as a backing that is Opaque and not terribly expensive.

  3.
I am interested in building a giant overhead area softbox to be hung from ceiling in my studio. the size will be 12'x6'. I will construct the frame from PVC pipe. There are a variety of options for building both the skin and the actual diffusion front of the Box. From a list of possible front diffusion material including ripstop nylon, artificial silk cloth, sailcloth, white bed sheets, and shower curtain, I have decided that commercial rolls of Rosco or Lee grid cloth will probably work the best and are not terribly expensive. HOWEVER, I cannot seem to decide on what material to use for INSIDE of box. My technique will be to bounce the lights into the back of the box and reflect light back down through grid cloth. This will eliminate need for baffle and will help keep depth of box down to 2.5 feet to take up less space. This inner fabric should be a WHITE reflective material (subjective choice here because I know silver is option as well) but I cannot decide on what to use. I do not want to use traditional foamboard for inside becuase I want the entire unit to be modular and collapsibe in the dean collins lightform panel style. I know that I could use ripstop nylon for inside, but this material is still slightly translucent. umbrellas which are used in REFLECTIVE mode often use a translucent material that can also be shot shoot-through so clearly this method might me ok. However it seems to me that using a completely opaque reflective material might be more efficient than a translucent. What fabric might this be? Any advice? Thanks

  4. I need help in identifying the various versions of tamron lenses. Ultimately,

I want to use them on Canon EOS but I need help in being able to identify the

mount style when shopping on ebay. Many sellers do not specify, they probably

dont know. I have a list of tamron lenses via McBroom's camera Bluebook, but

he does not specify which lenses came in which mount. Apparently there are

Tmount, adaptamatic, adaptall, and adaptall 2 mounts. I actually bought a

135mm 2.8 marked -Auto Tamron (no.420102) with a nikon mount. Dont know how to

tell which it is (excluding tmount). I have heard adaptall 2 to EOS mounts are

rare now after being discontinued. How can i get a manual tamron lens to work

auto-aperature if I cannot find an EOS to adpt2 adapter? Does anyone know of a

web link of other useful source that lists or pictures new and old tamron

    lenses????thanks

  5. thanks for your response. The trouble im having is that i cant seem to get a small reflector to hold very well using my superclamp/flexarm/gripclamp system. whenever you clamp the side of a reflector it is very wobbly and hard to point precisely. I know that true reflector holders have two movable bars for each side of a reflector which stabilize it. I was thiking of tring to make some kind of small reflector holder out of a ruler or something.
  6. I am looking for a lightweight way to enable holding a reflector in the field

for nature photography. Most reflector holders seem too long and would add too

much weight to my already overloaded backpack. I want to figure out a way to

attatch a small 12" reflector to my tripod. Any suggestions for creating a

light holder that would still enable me to point or direct the reflector (not

just a hook on a spike in the ground)?thanks

  7. dan,

you are too good of a source for answers so instead of doing google searches i cant help but just ask you---- I have a 50mm EL-nikkor f/4. i guess thats one of the older EL-nikkors. anways, i understand that the mount is a 39mm leica screw mount which is mostly standard for enlargers. the front of it also has threads. i want to reverse mount this on bellows for macro. any idea what size these threads are?? i have heard of a rodenstock 39mm reverse adapter and something from BORG that steps-up but i am still unclear on how these work. What El-nikkor (or any enlarging lens) would you reccommend for reverse. Are the new EL's better?? How can i go about reverse mounting it w/o skgrimes or making an adapter?? I know,I know, stick to reverse nikkor 55mm 2.8. I dont have one yet-i will have one soon -but this EL is just sitting here.... thanks

  8. I want to try reverse mounting the lenses from my keystone 8mm camera. they all have small filter threads. stepping up rings seem to come in some small sizes 24,25,25.5,27mm etc....i guess i could use a step/up ring combined with a reverse adapter but im not even sure these old filter threads are standardized with photo threads. Dan, i havent read that book yet but can anyone give me adapter advice????
  9. dan

i will buy that book right away and read every page. one last question before then. If reverse mounting 8mm cinema lenses is practical enough to use for photomacrography and leicina cameras use leica m mount lenses which are supposed to be great lenses, would reverse mounting a regular leica lens work as well for macro?? I understand that I am looking for a cheap alternative and these are very expensive. p.s. how about using a regular cine ektar (not II that you suggest). these look cheap on ebay.thanks

  10. I have a keystone k38 8mm camera with 4 removable lenses. 1/2" 2.3, 13mm 1.4 zeika, 1 1/2" 1.9zeika nominas, 6.5mm 1.9 zeika nominas. will any of these lenses be sufficient for reverse mounting??? so basically from what im told the smaller the lens format, the more suitable to photograpginh smaller subjects...ie 35mm for larger subjects, 8mm for very small subjects????dan i would like to try a reversed 55/2.8 MicroNikkor AIS at f/4. just curious, would the nikon 55mm 3.5 micro lens yield comparable results to the 2.8???? thanks
  11. I am interested in using cinema lenses (reverse mounted on bellows for 35mm

camera) for macro work 1:1-10:1. I would like to know if there are any

certain lenses that perform better than others for this type of work. Also

regarding format, would it be better to use 8mm, super8, 16mm, or 35mm

lenses??? Are there any less difficult way of reverse mounting them???

  12. I have a pocket seneca No.29. I actually figured that the best thing to do would be to drill a new hole being that there are so many lenses in the size 0 available compared to 00. Only problem is right behing the removable lensboard that the owner created, the seneca bellows has a fixed lensboard that is also a size 00. I would be nervous about drilling that. If i screw up the removable lensboard I could always make a new but but not so with the bellows lensboard. Curious about this comment---The #00 was used, typically, to hold a normal lens on a 35 mm folding camera, e.g., Kodak Retina----- are you saying that a size 00 was typically used to hold a 35mm lens in a folder?? as for this--I have a 50 mm Componon enlarging lens in a 00 shutter used for closeup shooting and copying. Not much else fits----How do you fit an enlarging lens with a shutter?? does this work well for 4x5??? the super angulon was really the only lens that i have ever heard of. By the way anone ever had succes with using a modern LF lens on a very old field camera?? THe origional owner of mine said he moved the viewing glass back to correctly align for film. If it works, this would prbably be the lightest field camera i have ever held. could easily pack with 35mm equipment on hikes and not even notice.
  13. I bought an old seneca wooden field camera which was modified my it's owner to

take modern LF lenses (at least modern like last 50 years). However the lens

board and camera opening are for a size 00 shutter. I am trying to generate a

list of which lenses were made in that size. I know only of a few Schneider

lenses. Does anyone know of makes and types of any other 00 lenses???? thanks

  14. dan,

curious to know why the nikon pb-4 and spiratone bellows master are useless??? Im assuming that your comparing them to actually using a real view camera. Im sure that there is no substitute for using a view camera with 35mm, but i simply wanted to try and find a way to get some basic movements. By the way how effective are the canon ts-e lenses??? i am instested in both closeup and photomacrography. The nikon multiphot and leitz Aristophot look impressive but $$$$$. Any advice on getting a photar, luminar, or macro-nikkor and attatching to a bellows with adapter for photomacrography??? thanks

  15. hey thanks everyone for the advice.

I knew about the hartblei 80mm but not the arsat 35mm 2.8. The website says they both cone in Eos mounts! I knew that there would be problems focusing to infinity with a bellows t/s setup but i do a lot of macro work so i would probably just stick to that. As far as image circles go, I have read that keeping tilts/shift to a minimum would allow for a smaller circle to be effective. would this range be 100-135mm or longer for a 35mm lens??? how about using an enlarging lens or finding a specific short mount lens? would this allow focusing to infinity??? I have read that large format lenses would not give enough resolution on a 35mm frame. Any merit to this claim???? I will have to read up on homebrew monorail creation. thanks

  16. I just ebay bought a rollei 35b. advancing the lever to cock the shutter

actually fires the shutter which stays open untill i press the shutter button.

i took the camera apart and seem to have identified to part that is not

working but i have no idea how to fix it. does anyone know where i can get a

scanned copy of a rollei 35b repair manual? anyone have a .pdf file they can

email me??? perhaps someone even know how to fix it?? --thanks

  17. I am looking for a cheap way to use tilt/shift in 35mm photography without

having to but an expensive lens (I use canon eos). Does anyone have any ideas

about modifying a bellows to allow for tilt/shift. Can i not simply take one

off the rail and find a way to attatch it to a tripod??? I am aware of the

nikon pb-4 bellows with a nikon to canon lens mount adapter option. the pb-4

doesnt seem to run cheap on ebay. cant find a spiratone bellows master

anywhere. novoflex too expensive. what about medium format pc lenses with 35mm

adapter? i believe most of these lenses would be over $500 however. i want to

use my 30d digital 35mm body, not a medium format camera with a 35 back and pc

    lens. any advice?- thanks
