  1. The Kiron seems like a good option. I'll keep my eyes open.

I didn't expect the difficulty there is right now to find SMC lenses. I should have bought more a few years back when I was shooting with my Fujica ST 801.

I actually have a Fujinon EBC 50/1.8 lens from that camera but it doesn't seem to sit well in my *ist D with the k-mount adapter that I purchased for screwmounts.

  2. I got to use the 21mm pancake da at b&h a week ago with my recently acquired

*ist d. I would love to have something with a similar focal length, but am not

ready just yet to drop the $400+ on a 21mm da.

My question to the forum then is what are some ultra-wide lenses (that when

magnified on a digital sensor will be less than or equal to a 35mm on a film

body) options? These lenses don't necessarily have to be pentax made, and

    definitely can be manual.

  3. markku, i updated the firmware in hopes of resolving my issues with images not being written properly to my cf card. i have a 2gb card and am shooting raw. since the update yesterday i've not had the same issues... let's hope they don't come back (the fat table on the card seemed to get corrupted).

unfortunately i don't have a manual (got the body used). if you or anyone wants to summarize the important points in the settings for M lenses, that would be very helpful.. :)

i'm definitely happy with my 35/3.5 --- though i have quite a bit to learn about digital photography, especially how to "develop" the negatives i'm producing so that they are consistent.

  4. hello all,

so i have an *ist d with a smc takumar 3.5/35 lens attached. i took it into a

shop where a guy helped me apply the lens adapter and then also set some custom

functions. i now don't recall what these changes were.

are there settings that should be used when using a manual lens like the one i have?

i just also updated to the current firmware (1.12) and in the process my

settings got wiped. the noticeable change is that when i meter with the green

button on the top-right, i hear the noise of gears coming from the camera. i

don't recall this noise before. it seems like auto-focusing jumping in. i'd

rather not have the camera doing this, and i especially hope that doing so does

not damage the camera in any way when a manual lens is attached.

i tried playing with the custom function settings without any luck.

    thanks!

    tahir

  5. Could someone explain to me what a "dual control wheel" is? I've tried searching around but haven't had much luck. Thanks. How does it help with low-light auto-focusing? Or am I getting things confused?

I love all the help here. The *ist D and the DS seem to be my current choice if I want to stick to the $400 range for bodies. the $900 K10d also seems attractive but I think I have much to learn about digital cameras, and that can be done very well with either the D or the DS.

  6. So what is the AF motor the only difference between the DS and the D? It seems people really love the AF motor in the D, but are there any features of the DS that would be good for me? Like I said before I'll be shooting mainly with manual lenses but will keep a standard prime AF in the beginning.

The K10D seems to be in a price range far above my own. The body should go for around 900. I can get a D or DS right now for 400 and shoot RAW till I have had my fill with the 6mp sensor.

  7. So the CCD in a DS/DS2 does not drastically differ from that found in a K100D?

It seems like a DS might be an exciting option for less than $400.

Does anyone have links where the output from a DS/DS2 is compared to the K100D?

    Thanks everyone!

  8. When the Nikon D40 was announced I got excited. I have been planning to purchase

a dslr but decided to wait till the end of the year as a birthday present to

    myself.

But reading again through all the reviews and postings about digital cameras has

reminded of something I have always felt is problematic for me when making a

decision about a camera purchase. The fact is that I want a small camera (the

D40 tries to be slim) and I want prime lenses.

In reading about cameras I have also been reminded of how wonderful it might be

to get a camera that would take the really wonderful manual SMC lenses that are

still being sold. My first experience with my own camera was a Pentax that I

bought a few SMC lenses for.

So I'm wondering if people in this forum can clarify the decision making process

for me. There are the new pentax bodies (K100D/K110D), one generation back (*ist

DL2 and DS2), and the ones from a few years ago (DL, DS and the 2003 D). The

prices for a used body from a year or more ago is about $150-200 less than the

    current crop.

What do people see as the pros and cons in deciding to go with a K100D/K110D

instead of the DL2/DS2 or even the older DL/DS/D options?

My plan is to get the body at a good price and start with a pretty wide fast SMC

manual lens. I'll shoot with that for a while and I'm sure I'll be very happy!

    ciao, tahir
