So do you think it would be better to grab everything else but her and blur it?

Ya, wow - the contrast on this shot is great. It's almost like you're using a bounce to get the light up into his face - which with your own comment, you probably didn't do. I'm going to make a guess here and say that it was probably an overcast or partially overcast day and taken afternoon? I'm impresed that even with the hat (required for the shot, really) you were still able to capture his expression.

Shot of The Chicago Millinium Park "Bean" reflecting downtown
buildings. Photoshop work was to fix levels and curves. Make Canon :

Wow, really - fantastic composure and framing. It does a great job of communicating so much. If I were to add anything, I guess I would like to see it without the sepia overtone, and perhaps attempting to bump the shadows up a bit; the guy sitting up more has a little too much of his face darkened.
-
In photoshop, I desaturated, made some major adjustments to levels and
the curve, then added a directional lighting effect from top left to
bottom right, creating the shadow effect.
I really like the almost abstract monochromatic look to this shot.
That is a bike chain bracelet also in the image ,which adds... a
little interesting contrast.

This shot would do well with a "lomo" treatment (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/how-to-make-digital-photos-look-like-lomo-photography/)
I did that to one of my shots which is kind of similar and the effect was really good...

Great layering, you obviously had good source material. I would prefer however if the woman was a bit more... I don't know, blurred more? Her edge, espically against the blackness is too stark.
-
Very good balance of light across the model. I would have prefered more info on how you accomplished the shot - lighting? Exposure? Details?
The picture overall looks very.,.. refreshing! (smile)
-
Could you talk a little about the actual lighting used in this photo? You can see what appears to be a light box from the eyes, but there's obviously more going on here.
-
I really like the overall levels of this shot - great balance of hilights and lowlights. I also agree though that the model should either be less or more present. And you could have considered having her "hop" into space to disrupt less sand...

f/18, 1sec exposure, ISO-400, RAW, re-leveled with CS2, saved as jpg.
Used remote shutter release, minimal photoshop work. It's a little...
moody. I'm generally a smiley sorta fella but not for this shot. I
found the "disco ball" (it is a black ball with several colored
lenses, spinning in x and y axis) from the local Goodwill store.
