Any degrading of my jpegs (however slight) is what is what I am trying to avoid.

Hi there, I am just trying to re-tag the image to a different dpi tag. (tis is required for submitting to some image libraries) If I do this in Irvanview, I have to resave the image which I do not want to do that with a jpeg. Using Exiftool (exiftool -Xresolution=300 -Yresolution=300 *.jpg)
works perfect except for the images without any dpi value in the jpeg header. Any suggestions?

I hope you can help. I have jpeg images without EXIF headers. When I use Exiftool to change the dpi (exiftool -Xresolution=300 -Yresolution=300 *.jpg) to 300dpi, Exiftool creates an exif header with this information. When I submit these images to photo libraries, they do not recognize the exif header, and uses the the dpi embedded in the jpeg-header. The problem is that Exiftool changes the previous dpi to 300, but only for images that had a pevious dpi value. Some of my images does not have a dpi value embedded in the jpeg header, and for these images Exiftool does not change the dpi to 300. When I open these images in Irvanview after using exiftool, it still shows no value for the dpi. Should I use exiftool in another way for these images?

Thank you Rainer T,
I really appreciate this information. This is exactly what I was looking for !

Hi There,
Is there any freeware available to change the dpi (to 300dpi) without any loss of image quality? As far as I
understand the dpi info is stored as EXIF in the image, and does not change the image properties, so it should be
possible only to change the dpi of an image without resaving. If I do this in photoshop and resave, I think one
will lose image quality. I just need to make sure my images do not degrade in quality. Any advice will be
appreciated.
Thank you
Anton

Thanks a lot, I copied the Colour profile file "AdobeRGB1998.icc" that I found in Photoshop, to the following windows directory: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color. Rawshooter gives me the AdobeRGB1998 option now.

I hope someone can help, I am using Photoshop 7 and Rawshooter Essentials to
convert, edit and save my images. I need to choose adobeRgb as my working
space to save (in Rawshooter), but it does not give me that option. It only
gives me the sRGB option among others.I have found out that once Adobe RGB is
showing up in the Windows Color Management Utility, RawShooter will pick it up
automatically. I have tried to add AdobeRGB as colour profile in Windows, but
windows says it is not a valid color profile.(There are some image libraries I
am submitting to, that require Adobe Rgb(1998). I know that I can convert from
sRGB to adobeRGB in Photoshop,Is this the best way to do it? How is this done?
Is sRGB the best colour space to save my images in for other uses like home
printing and web poting etc? I would also appreciate it if you can refer me to
a good monitor calibrating tutorial (without requiring you to purchase
hardware/software)Will apreciate any responces.Thank you

Thanks for all the replies. I am submitting to an image library called PhotoLibra.com. They require one of the following:
JPEGs at max. quality (minimum 6MB at 300dpi+)
or TIFF files (minimum 12MB) (I can find no more info on their website-they referred me to Photo.net)
After converting raw files to Tiff, and editing The Tiff files In Photoshop7, I end up with Tiff files of 46MB (too big for me to download within reasonable time on a dialup connection) I need to convert them to JPEGS. There is no jpeg option under save as in PS7. I then go to save for web, where I save as JPEG at Max quality. The resulting image is automatically saved at 72 dpi. Is there a way to change the dpi setting before saving? And still the resulting image file size is only 3MB! Can you see why I am on the edge? Thanks for all the inputs.

I am currently using Rawshooter essentials to convert RAW files to JPEG.The
resulting JPEG's are 3.1MB in size. After converting them to JPEG, I use
Photoshop7 to retouch if needed.I am submitting to a site that require 6MB and
larger JPEG's.How do I go about increasing the JPEG filesize without losing
quality? Is this the best workflow to use? Do I lose image quality each time I
work on and resave a foto? Will appreciate any feedback. Thank you

Hi Katherine,
The answer to your problem is Irfanview, a freeware program that you can download at http://www.irfanview.com/
Simply click on the "i" with a red circle and then edit your iptc info. Just click "write" after you are done and the info is saved (no need to re save)
Hope this helps you
