I suffered the same question when it was time to buy my camera. Reading many reviews it was determined that the 70-300 IS (non-DO) lens for about $500 US, was a significantly better lens than the older 75-300 one. Plus there was a rebate on that lens at the time. I am happy with the IS feature of the lens, and the reach is outstanding, especially with the 1.6X crop factor.
