Hi Alec,
I just wrote an article for Samy's showing some of my lighting techniques:
http://www.samys.com/articles/david_honl/real_world_lighting.php
I usually hover around 1.5 stops underexposure on the background, depending on the
look I want. Although I use Canon's ETTL2 wireless systems alot, I resort to manually
adjusting the strobes and camera. Can't break me of my early days with the Vivitar 283s, I
guess!
Good luck,
Dave

I use the HyperDrive: http://hyperdrive.com
If you want, you can buy the case alone for $149 and add your own 2.5" drive. I just used it in
Iraq for a month, and it took its share of abuse. Uses AA batteries (rechargeables are
included).

The BG-E3 is for the Rebel XT/350 only. The BG-E2 is for the 20D/30D (not the older 3mp
D30).
(why Canon transposed the D30/30D names I'll never know)
William, regardless of your camera model, the battery grip is a good thing. Makes the body
much more comfortable to hold, especially vertically, and gives you double the shooting
time with the use of a 2nd battery. Enjoy and good luck!

Manish,
Your 17-40 zoom won't have the depth of field marking on it, but fixed focal lenght lenses
will. Congrats on the lens- you won't be disappointed with it.
The canoe picture reminds me of my younger days growing up in N. Minnesota- thanks fro
reviving the memory.

I've always used PhotoMechanic on my Macs, mostly for its speed and constant updates.

I used the 10D professionally when it was the cat's meow. I still continue to sell beautiful
11x14 prints from the it (heck, even from my old D30 3mp).
Used 10D bodies are a real bargain now, so don't be afraid of them if you're on a budget.
Take care,
Dave

I use (all Canon), on 1DS bodies and 20D:
20mm 2.8
28mm 1.8
50mm 1.8 (MK2)
70-200 f/4
17-40 f/4
You'll finfd the 28mm on my bodies most often. Although L lenses are of better optical
and build quality, I doubt you could see the difference in the final print.
Hope this helps,
Dave

Hi Nav,
If you can live with the slower f/4 aperture of the 17-40, it is an excellent lens. I use it on
my 1DS bodies, and also frequently on my 20D it gives a good workable range of
27-64. In lower light situations with your 30D you can push your ISO to 800 to make up
for the slower f/4 of the 17-40. Newer digitals seem to be handling noise better at higher
ISOs, and that's a good thing!
Take care,
Dave
Basic Canon Flash Question - New Canon User
in Lighting Equipment
Posted
With my 1DS/580 setup, I almost always set the camera manually for the most control over
depth of field, background motion blur, etc. When lighting for portraits, I'll also set the flash
manually as I've nailed down those settings over the years.
