Hmmmmmm.... I'm a newbie here, and am curious as to why it's such a big issue -- 'privacy' and 'internet' are relatively mutually-exclusive terms. It's the price paid for the increasing reliance on information technology. What it really comes down to is a sociological problem, not a technological one.
As far as 'backgrounds' are concerned, wonder what people would think of Einstein's working as a patent clerk... Frankly as a budding serious photographer, I'd actually LIKE for people to view my early works, heck, if I ever became rich and famous, those early works might actually be worth something...
The internet is a community. And in real communities, there are things you do and don't do. Don't post things that could get you into problems. Maybe keep the artistic nudes to another site. Or do what they did in the old days -- throw a physical portfolio together and go pound pavement.
I'm here to learn photography. share my efforts, ask for feedback and suggestions. And I am thinking that the whole 'ratings' thing is really not needed. Fun spirited competition maybe -- and even then perhaps something akin to a simple 'this picture or THAT picture' as in a 'sudden death' sequential showdown where a somewhat more 'realistic' rating level could be achieved. (A form of user-participation 'jurying'.)
Is 10 megapixels enough?
