1.
+1 for the Up-Strap! Its is so confortable because you just relax your shoulder and the strap just hangs and stays put. I am a 6'3", and the supplied Nikon straps were just too short to carry on my shoulder.

  2. Keith, two years ago when I started looking into DSLR's I had the D200 on order and after waiting for a few weeks I changed my mind, and decided to go with the D70s over the D200; because of the D200's poor battery life and similar noise at high ISO compared to the D70s.

When the D300 was announced last year I tried to tell to my self that I could wait long enough and skip another generation waiting for the next replacement, but I just could not deal with the poor viewfinder of the D70s anymore. So last week I ordered the D300 because its a very nice improvement from the D200.

I also contemplated the D80 for a day or two, and although I liked how comfortable the larger viewfinder is on the D80 I knew I was going to upgrade to a semi-pro body sooner or later. The LCD screen on D300 sealed the deal, it's worlds apart from my old D70s.

Hope this helps in your decision...

I am still waiting for the D300...can't wait much longer.

  3. Rich, I got into DSLR's for the same reason you have. I did not want the P&S look of my first child's pictures almost two years ago. I decided then on a D70s with the 18-70mm kit lens and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. As a couple of others members have recommended before me, the D80 would be a better investment for what you want to do, because the limited number of fast prime lenses that will AF with the D40. You will be able to take beautiful pictures with just those two lenses. Another option to the 50mm would be the 35mm f/2 which will give you a close focusing distance.
  4. Conor, I think that the a D70s with 23k shutter actuations would be kind of high, I would try to look for one under 10k clicks. For me a D40 or a D40x would be out of the question for the lack of AF with most of prime lenses on Nikon's lineup. The 1/500sec sync speed of the D70s is very useful too compared to the other cameras that only have a 1/250sec.

The D80 felt really light and a bit smaller than my D70s, but I did like the larger viewfinder of the D80.

  5. Anybody else using the Up-traps? I was also looking to replace my Nikon strap, and was looking a the Op/Tech Pro's until I took a look at the ones that Ellis recommended. Just trying to find out if the $10 to $12 difference in price is worth it?

    Thanks!

  6. Wenshu, I have the same lens and noticed the same difference in sound compared to my Nikon 50mm f/1.4. I just assumed that it was because of the metal barrel that is on the 28mm would transfer sound better that the plastic on the 50mm; but I think that Bjorn explained a lot better he knows his stuff.
  7. It looks like you have plenty of experience traveling around in Guatemala. "The situation, if I'm to believe news reports, is unsettled - random, opportunistic crime, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, theft and rip-offs. Most tourists are unaffected. I just don't want to stand out". This has been the situation in Guatemala for many years, and it is not going to change any time soon. You just have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Antigua it is pretty safe so I would not worry about your gear. You might regret not taking the MF once you arrive.

I am jealous because I go to Guatemala every year July/August, but my wife is expecting our first child arround the 1st week of August.

This year we will have to pass.

Enjoy your time in Guate and take a lot of pictures. I will be looking forward to seeing them.
00HH7i-31145384.jpg.505e7e8a1c73269d25ab9725a090d83f.jpg
