I have to put a vote in for the Rollei 35's. small, compact, manual focus but incredibly
sharp and contrasty lens. I just got a roll developed and as always I am stunned at the
quality of the pictures from the Sonnar lens in mine. I have the Konica Auto S3 as well and
it's a nice camera with a great lens, but the Rollei is really in a class by itself.

Peter- I just saw that car this morning (10/31/07) in Portland! I love art cars- you should check out Harrod Blanks documentary "Wild Wheels"- <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105821/>

You guys are making me want an old Elmar now! Is it really different from the Summar in design, as I already have and enjoy that one...

I will 2nd third and fourth the rollei 35S- recently picked one up cheap and ran a roll through it- I was astounded at how sharp the lens is and that scale focusing is really easy with reasonably fast film.

It's a great magazine, lots of thoughtful subjects and done in a very low key style- we have had a subscription for the last 2 years, and I realize it's lapsed- time to re-up!

I have an ORAKO on my IIIa on the rangefinder window, which I beleive is the "proper" window to put it on. it works by increasing the contrast of the split image and does a great job. I do have a little trouble with the infinity lock on my summaron 35/3.5 but most lenses go on fine- the trick is to unlock the lens and crank it out, otherwise its easy enough to remove and re-install the ORAKO.

I picked up a minty meter 3 w/ case for cheap to go atop my IIIc, it looks so
cool and it seems as though it still works(sort-of)although accuracy could be
questionable. My question is, there are 2 arrows to line up with the needle, 1
is dark and the other is light- was this a low light/high light thing? Am I
missing a slit cover or something for it? just curious if anyone has opinions or
recollections about this meter...

yes it is a Taron!! citizen MVE shutter was the clincher. The glass looks to be good and the overall feel is not bad, a little rough around the edges, but it looks like a decent shooter. viewfinder is nice and clear with a tiny rangefinder patch. I need to redo the light seals, but will probably use it as a throwaway shooter, being as I gt it for $5. USD!

Trying to find some info on this company/camera. It's a B/A "AUTO EE 1.8" (in
quotations!) fixed lens 45mm/ f1.8 with a CDS meter- rangefinder. auto aperture
setting tied to the light meter. The lens says Nichimen Co. It is built pretty
beefy and has a pretty nice action on the shutter cocking. Metal shutter
(copal?), and 4 blade aperture- ASA up to 400 and shutter speeds B to 500. i
know it's just a run of the mill camera but I was wondering if anyone knew
anything about it?

since I'm not a paying member I couldn't re-post yesterday, but thanks for all the great
advice, everyone- picked up a copy of "the Leica and Leicaflex Way" from the Library
yesterday, lots of good info so far. In response to your question Mike- It was 30.00 USD
for the whole kit with a leica case and a nice leather kit bag! It came with a couple of filters
(haze and skylight) and a Tiffen square metal hood with appropriate adapter-even has the
original lens cap. It's not entirely mint-it has the bubbled chrome on the body which is
common it seems on Postwar III's, from all the reading I have done. It seemed way too nice
to pass up though.

Hello-
I just picked up a thrift store prize of a Leica IIIc with a 50mm Summitar, some filters and a hood. I'm
not a big photographer- started out on the Pentax K1000 (still have 2) because I like the manual feel,
but am really intrigued by this little beauty. I feel a little lost as I don't develop my own film but
certainly want to use the camera, just don't know where to begin to learn about exposure, best films to
use, etc. etc. Originally bought the camera with the idea of selling it, but now have become obsessed
with the idea of using it. It probably could use a CLA but the shutter seems to work fine and the curtain
looks servicable. where do i go/ what books do i read to decipher this thing? specifically the F-stops
non-standard range doesn't match with any modern meter- the sunny f16 rule doesn't apply here! any
comments greatly appreciated.

Is it possible that you have an ORAKO or OKARO on the rangefinder window? I have an
ORAKO on my IIIa which improves the contrast of the rangefinder, although it makes it
easier to focus, but it should be on the left-hand window as you look at the front. Mine is
sort of brownish and looks like a theatrical gel over the window. I would unscrew the front
windows and see if this is the case.<div></div>
