1. Thanks for the replies. I never use the camera in aperture priority but all shutter speeds work fine the manual and electronic ones. Hence I assume it is something to do with the metering system. The main circuit board and all the electronics have been replaced/checked. When the problem occurs, the led lights for either over or under exposure, top or bottom of the scale and stays there, regardless of shutter speed change, aperture change or ISO change. Usually, if another exposure is made it will then go back to giving a correct reading. Yes, double exposing the frame with a cap on would perhaps be a good way to avoid wasting shots. Usually if I am lucky the light value has remained the same and as I am on manual, it does not matter too much.
 2. I have a minor problem with my much-loved Pentax LX that Pentax UK and a very highly regarded UK repair company have been unable to fix. The camera works fine but every so often the metering "sticks" on over or LTB and it takes a wasted exposure or so to clear it. It has been suggested, and I tend to agree, that maybe it is a microswitch problem on the mirror box? The main circuit board and other parts have all been replaced but the problem never seems to go away. Has anyone come across this before or know a fix - other than carrying a separate light meter, etc?
 3. I have a R6.2 and tend to use it far more than my R8. It sits in "spot" metering mode and has not let me down let after quite a few years of use. I agree with others that it has a bit of a lag and the shutter has quite a clunk but I tend to use the mirror release a lot which solves that issue. With a 35mm f2.8 and a 90mm I find it a nice compact travel kit.
 4.
Dear Ken,
I have one which you can have. Proviso, though, it did not seem to fit the Tamron lens I was trying to use so I am not sure what version it is, whether it is adaptall 2 or earlier? The adaptor fits my R8 without any problems though. There is also one tiny screw missing but I don't think it makes much odds. Tell me where to send it (e-mail me an address at franklidave@gmail.com) and I will pop it in the post. I am in the UK by the way.
Best wishes
David

 5.
I have resisted going digital so far as I have lots of lovely R lenses and I am not sure even the official "R solution" is quite what I had hoped for, plus being financially out of my reach. (An EOS 5 and adapter might be okay and I am aware people swear by Leitax but still not really what I want.)
However, I was thinking, what sort of camera would make me give up film at last. Something like this perhaps.....
A full frame equivalent of a Fuji Xpro-1 or XE-1, but with one major change. The sensor to front of body distance would be as short as possible. In front, there would thus be space for some clever interchangeable electro-mechanical adaptors that would not only be able to take a variety of lenses but would allow R lenses (and FD, NAIS, MD perhaps?) to be used with open aperture metering. The viewfinder would have to be an evf but they are supposedly getting better....?
Good resolution, open aperture metering and a shutter speed dial, is that so much to ask! Why do so few cameras have a shutter speed dial these days, are endless menu's and buttons really so much quicker/better?
Has there actually been a DSLR that has had a shutter speed dial - excluding the DMR of course, I can't think of one?
I am sure what i would like must be technically possible, but I am guessing most of the profit is in lenses so no great incentive for anyone to make such a camera?
I wonder what an xpro-2 will look like?

 6.
I am hoping to buy a 21mm lens soon for my M4. I am trying to decide between a Zeiss zm f4.5 (for its compactness and performance) and a Leica pre-asph. Also, is there any difference between the two versions of the pre-asph apart from the front of the mount/filter size. I quite like the compactness of the early version before it went to E60.
(I don't really need f2.8 and wasn't keen on the Zeiss f2.8 version and have already considered the Voigtlander)
Views on the pre-asph particularly, would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
David

 7.
Would it be mechanically/otherwise possible, albeit very expensive no doubt, to have a Nikon D800 modified to use Leica R lenses with open aperture metering? I am aware of Leitax, etc. but I would rather modify one camera than x lenses. Just a thought, though maybe the Leica R digital solution will appear this year after all, but maybe that is where the dreaming comes in.......?

 8.
Dear all, I was in a well-known London Leica dealer today and one of the staff mentioned that there is a new 50mm f2 asph lens coming out in the next few months to replace the current summicron. Sounds interesting, anyone know any more??

 9.
Dear Bill,
I was at Horseshoe bend in Summer 2008 and found I needed a 19mm on my R8 to have any hope of getting all the bend in as I wanted it. That was getting perilously close to the edge too to lose the foreground. I guess 21mm will be close enough? I went very early in the morning too which is great as the sun gradually fills the canyon, giving a lot of scope for different lighting plus you miss out on the worst of heat - and in August it was very hot indeed come the middle of the day! I am guessing you are heading for antelope canyon too if you are out that way - have a fantastic trip.

 10.
Dear all, thank you again for the replies. I think I probably will go for the 50 and 150 - though I take on board everyone's points and kind comments. The trip is 95% a photographic one so I am not worried about the weight, as someone said, I don't have to take the camera out with me everytime.
I must apologise too, much as I have a few tee-shirts from the other Venice (Beach) I did mean the one in Italy and should have made that clear. The first camera shop I ever went into in California was the old branch of Samy's Camera in Venice Beach, I believe it has gone now though?

 11.
Thank you for the replies everyone. I take your point Michael, I have lugged a load of Hasselblad kit around Paris and New York (including tripod of course) and it was a pain - literally after a few days! There again I love the pictures I took on both trips. I went to Venice in my youth with a Pentax MX, 28,50 and 135mm lenses. I remember mainly using the 28 and 135 most of the time hence my thoughts about the 50 and 150mm. Maybe you are right though Paul, perhaps I should bite the bullet and take all three....

 12.
Dear all, I am going to Venice later in the summer and will be able to take only a limited amount of kit. Basically I intend to take a 500cm and two lenses. My inclination is that the most useful pair would be a 50mm and a 150mm. Alternatively one of those two (50mm I guess) and a 100mm? I know focal length should not matter and I am sure in Venice it is possible to take a memorable picture with almost anything but.......if any of you have been to the city taking medium format kit, what focal lengths did you use most?

 13.
Dear Alex, I wasn't sure if such mails were really deemed to be good etiquette here so didn't say too much. The camera seemed in pretty much mint condition to me, much nicer than my M4 and looked very nice indeed with the m3 parts. The rangefinder seemed clear and the wind on and shutter seemed beautifully smooth. That is really all I know. There is a website for Aundel Photographica if you do a quick search. The chap who runs the place is called Chris and he used to be the UK manager for Rollei I believe?? That really is all I know - I would suggest you drop him an e-mail if you are interested.

 14.
Apologies if this is not the sort of post one should put. I was in Arundel Photographica this afternoon (UK camera shop, run by a gentleman amongst gentlemen). The said gentleman has an immaculate M4 for sale which has been fitted with M3 style levers, etc. It is indeed a thing of beauty. I know they don't have much of a web site so thought I would post this in case anyone was interested. I have no connection with the shop other than having been a very happy customer there over the years.

 15.
Mark, I am glad there has been something said relatively recently then. However, not that enthused about electronic viewfinders but then beggars can't be choosers as the saying goes! I would definitely hope for full frame though, as other have suggested a modified A900 would be just fine for me.

 16.
I remember seeing reports of Leica executives claiming there would still be some sort of solution for Leica R owners to use their lenses on a digital body. Is this still the case or am I just kidding myself it might still happen? Could it be so hard to take the technology from the M9 and fit it to an R body? An 18MP full frame R body, I would be in heaven! I know all about the adapters available by the way.....

 17.
I thought I just sent a response, but it does not seem to have appeared? Anyway, thank you both for your responses. I don't have anything digital so can't easily submit a picture. I know what you mean about a lacy pattern from fungus and this does not look like that, more like a greasy fingerprint smear, but on an inside element.

 18.
I was checking my Hasselblad kit tonight and noticed that an internal element on my 903 has a small area of haze, almost looks like a small area of oil film, something like that? Could that be from the iris or is it fungus? I have e-mailed Hasselblad for a quote to clean it, but does anyone know of anyone else in the UK who could clean it? Many thanks.

 19.
Dear Chuck,
I have recently purchased a Zeiss 35mm f2.8 having been in a similar situation to yourself. I didn't need a fast lens and wanted something compact with good performance to go on an M4. If you are happy with f2.8 then I would thoroughly recommend it, for the price it is an excellent lens.
