Hi Chris,
You might find this article useful...

I was once advised to back up on hard drive plus 2 DVD copies (or whatever other disk you like to use). Keep one copy of the disks in one location and the other copies in a different location. Put them in fire proof boxes.

So for all you Canadians out there, I found a place in Canada that sells Solux bulbs (the only one I believe). They only sell the bulbs in bulks of 10. If you need less than 10 bulbs then you should get them direct from Solux. You are looking at around $18 for a shipment of 2 bulbs to Canada.
The address for the contact in Canada is:
Sunlight Sales, 71 Moore Park, Georgetown, Ontario, L7G 2T5
Phone 416 452 3885
Fax 905 873 6263
Contact name is Serge

I emailed them but so far no response. Phone call it is. Where are you living Patrick? Which bulbs do you have?

Does anybody know if we can buy Solux light bulbs in Canada? I'm guessing we have to buy direct from the US, but if anybody knows different I'd be grateful for the shared knowledge....

Thanks.

The software companies know how to squeeze money out of us hey. Spyder 3 Pro it is then.
Thanks for the advice....

OK, so what I am getting at is......do I really need to buy the Spyder 3 Pro version if I am going to be using the standard gamma or CCT anyway? Just trying to cut down on any unnecessary costs. Seems like I may as well get Spyder 3 Express. Am I correct??
Thanks.....

Thanks everyone.
Do any of you use a colour temp outside of 6500K or do you use any of the 'non-standard' gammut settings (i.e. NOT 2.2).

I am new to colour management and just can't forsee when I will need to deviate from the standard settings. I only have 1 monitor so I won't need to calibrate dual monitors.

I have since learnt that I need to get external calibration software. Now I just need to decided which one. Spyder 3 express or Spyder 3 pro are contenders.....

-

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I checked out all the links and they were helpful. I still haven't bought any strobes but Alienbees look like good contenders.
Love the softbox and scrim use for portraits. I have to try that!

Does anybody own Spyder 2 or 3 Pro? If so, do you use the advanced settings on it at all?

The Pro version has 4 choices of colour temperature and 4 choices of gamma settings. The Express version only allows native or 6500K for colour temp and 2.2 for gamma. From what I have been reading, these settings are what most people use anyway and are the standard.

I only use one monitor for editing so I don't need to buy the Pro version for multiple monitors but was wondering if I really am going to need the choice of colour temp and gamma settings.

I am new to colour management so it's hard to see whether I will need the Pro version later on or if the Express version is sufficient enough. Under what conditions will I find that I need to change the standard settings?

Appreciate any help!
Thanks.....

Hi Marcin,

I see that this post is a couple of years old, so I was wondering what your experiences were with the calibration systems. I own a 20" Mac and confused whether I need to buy calibration software or just use the Display Calibration Assistant.....
What are your experiences since the original post?
Thanks,

Hi,

Seems like a great idea. How did it work? Thinking of making one for myself.....

Hi,
I am looking to buy a set of studio lights/flashes and have no idea where to start.
I am setting up a studio in my fairly large spare bedroom in the basement. Initially I am intending to use it to build up my portfolio of portraits with the view to eventually setting up my business and also eventually having a shop and studio.
I have only ever played with natural light and an on camera flash and will be taking a lighting workshop or an online course in studio lighting.
What brand do you recommend that is reliable and suitable for what I need?
I don't want cheap products and I don't want to have to take out a 2nd mortgage just to buy lights.
Any help would be appreciated!

Does anybody know of a great place to buy studio props from? I'm in Canada so anything within the country would be preferable.
I'm hoping to find props that are great for use with baby/child photography mainly. Especially looking for vintage tin bathtubs, wooden rocking horses etc....
I don't know where to start.
Would appreciate your help!

I was recently told that there are between 3 and 12 microns per
pixel and the more microns, the higher quality of the photo. An 8MP
camera with 12 microns would be of a better standard than a 22MP
camera with 3 microns, for example. I have a Canon 350D and was
wondering if anyone out there knew how many microns per pixel my
camera has. I've tries searching the internet and my camera manual,
but no luck so far.
Can you help?
