1.
I've used Sterlingtek for my original 5D and they seemed to work really well. There was 1 that didn't work out of box but they sent me one free pretty much right away. I bought an LP-E6 for about $175 (Cdn) right Dec 2009 when my 5D II preorder arrived, now Mostly Digitally has them for $90 (OOS though, no surprise). I called up Sterlingtek to see when they'll have their own LP-E6 and their response was "still in development" but didn't have a timeline. In the meantime I think I'll stick to Canon OEM batteries.

  2. Thanks for your comments, I find this board pretty amazing for constructive criticism!

Brook -- you're right, I've got to pull back more and leave more space for crops. I'm still adjusting... I'm just so used to paying attn to composition from doing so much landscape and street photography.

David -- I didn't want to bump up the ISO too much, I think I was shooting at ISO 800 at f/2.8. I use a 20D so photos come out quite noisey at 1600. I'll have to look into buying gels. Looking at them now I totally should've played with the tempurature adjustments in RAW.

re: saturation -- I have a Dell calibrated with a Pantone Huey (pretty basic) and the photos were developed with a "medium contrast" setting in Camera RAW. They looked good to my eyes...personal preference for less saturated photos maybe...

  3. IMO there's no excuse not to pick up a 50mm f/1.8 considering it's like $75. I use mine quite a bit at concerts. It's great considering the noise issues encountered above ISO 800.

Also, consider picking up a copy of Noiseware for post work. I find it's one of the better noise reduction plugins for Photoshop.

  4. If problems persist after the AF tests then I'd recommend taking it to a *reputable* repair shop and get a calibration test done. Ask if their techs use a "collimator" (lens calibration for focus) in their tests. The shop I use in Toronto actually uses one of these, Canon only uses these in their factories but not when you bring back lenses to their tech dept to try to solve issues.

    just my 2c.

  5. Thanks for all the quick replies -- and making me blush from embarrassment! I was totally pressing the DoF button inadvertently!

So I guess I should take some preventive steps to avoid blinding further victims of my dumbass... how about a bottle cap and duct tape?

  6. I have a strange problem that's occurred ever since I bought my first 580EX and

used it with my 20D. After about 15 or 30 minutes the flash would emit this 1

second flickering light with a slight buzzy sound. Then I would hear it recycle.

This would happen perhaps 2 times within minutes, then stop for a while.

Any clues as to what's wrong? I have 2 580EX's and switching between them

doesn't stop the problem, so I'm thinking it's the 20D camera body that's the

culprit. Other people I know who have the same flash/body combo's said its never

    happened to them.
