Nicolas Vilars: funny that you say that because I was actually wondering if windows as a guest could have access to the graphic card.

A quick googling cleared this up.

On Xen Dom0 is your host machine and DomU your guest. If it was possible for your guest OS to access the graphic card, Dom0 would be the one to handle your it until you create a DomU. It is the transfer of the driver to DomU that seems to be delicate.

Only problem is that it's not possible to get that package where I live so I would need to order from the US. Add to that the fact that I don't really need a light meter and oyu get the idea...

I might have to wait for a second hand optix on ebay or go the wine route.

Also do you still use a LUT even though you have your profiles loaded?

Joseph Wisniewski: This is good I didn't know there was a live WinXP cd. If you use photoprint then you use lcms (or little cms), it is a library on top of which programs run. Have a look there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LittleCMS

Oh and sorry it wasn't lprog but lprof... I am interested by how you seem to do things, you say that you print match under photoprint but isn't colour management supposed to be used under the photo editing software as well?

Are you sure about the Gretag-Macbeth? I mean are you sure that they need to be run under windows because they seem to be supported by argyll, but it might be a different model...

Serge Cashman: Hi the only way I know of to do it is to try and print with different settings from the gutenprint or whatever you use interface, you need patience, luck, ink and paper. And you might not even get there... I didn't!

I have been trying (without success) to use color managed appllication under

GNU/Linux, mainly to be able to print on paper what I see on my computer.

All that with the use of cinepaint, gutenprint, lcms and lprog. No hardware tool

either since some people apparently can get accurate results without them, the

fact that the ones compatible with argyll cost a fortune is the other reason...

Also I am using adobe's free icc profiles.

Some people will probably advise to me to get a mac, I thought about it but I

have been using GNU/Linux for some time now and am quite familiar with it, color

management really is the only thing that gets in the way.

I have read several howtos on the subject but I haven't been able to get 1 print

that is close to what is displayed on the screen, generally the prints are brighter.

I would appreciate if some GNU/Linux users could/would like to share their

thoughts on the subject.

I recently got hold of a second hand epson 5500, the printer was out of magenta

ink so I couldn't test it but the person guaranteed to me that the printer was

in working order and I also bought other stuff from her which works, so my

opinion on that person wasn't that she tried to rip me off but who knows.

After ordering a magenta cartidge last week I ran a few cleaning sessions as

soon as I received it. It might be worth noting that I had to press the operate

button twice to turn it off, the first time it seemed like it prepared to put

the printer asleep since there was some kind of activity, as soon as this

stopped, all the frontlights went blinking, I pressed the operate button another

time and it turned the printer off.

Since then printer doesn't want to work anymore, it turns on and does something

for a couple of seconds and then stops with all the frontlights flashing and it

won't respond to anything.

If I take the cartidges out before starting the printer, then it will quietly

wait until I put them in and go back to flashing all of the frontlights... Also

it does some weird things if I press the cleaning button then the operate, it

doesn't help much, however.

The computer runs Slackware Gnu/Linux, and the output of lsusb gives me:

Bus 1 Device 11: ID 04b8:0005 Seiko Epson Corp. Stylus Printer

which means that it is being detected by the OS.

Even though, the printer should be able to perform a print check without being

connected to any computer, as far as I understand!

It didn't come with the manual so I downloaded one from the net but there are no

informations in there regarding this issue!

Jesus Eric that could have saved me a lot of time if I knew that before (regarding scanning C41 B&W), I did actually try to do that but never got down to convert to grayscale into photoshop so ended up with a funny looking picture... Thnaks for that!

Regarding the scan you posted it looks to be zorking like a charm. There is however a huge scratch on the scan using scanhancer compared to the one without.... Sorry to be picky but would you mind to explain please? unless it's a hair =)

Rich, thanks I will give this a go it sounds well cheap to do =) Why are fingerprints there forever? Actually it's funny that you say that because after scanning a negative the other day there was some sort of pattern on the bottom right of the scan and couldn't figure what it was, ICE wouldn't get rid of it under vuescan. So after a close inspection of the negative and I spotted that it was actually a fingerprint and removed it with a soft cloth, but maybe that wasn't a good idea =)

My apologies for not giving more informations on what I was scanning, that scan that took me 5 hours was from an xp2 neg I think, which is weird because I thought ICE worked on C41 B&W. But anyway I also scanned a few color negatives and the problem was roughly the same, maybe cut the time by half but it's still 2.5 hours spending cleaning dust and I have much better things to do! The use of ICE under vuescan with grain reduction also introduced some very strange sort of artifacts...

Hvaing spent a considerable amount of money on the scanner (although it was a bargain at $900), I will first give a go at fluid scanning as well as Pat's photoshop technique.

having spent about 5 hours the other day cleaning a picture under photoshop, I

said to myself that this wasn't right...

I only recently bought a film scanner (minolta multi pro) so that I could work

on my pictures myself, however the amount of time needed to clean the dust is

ridiculous and is better invested is something else IMO. The scanner is being

used with vuescan under Linux!

So my question is, is there a way of removing dust from a scan that will be

quicker than using the healing brush on photoshop? By cleaning the negative for

instance?

If not then I might seriously consider moving to digital =)

Here's a weird that has happened to me lately:

I found a job over the internet as a sales coordinator for a

photography agency based in the US, me living in London, we only

have been able to communicate via email.

The job was described as presenting some work to clients, finding

new clients and transfering some money coming from clients to

photographers via western union.

Now here's the weird thing, I've had around ﾣ3500(which is about

$7000) deposed onto my bank account to transfer to some people in

Russia. The thing is that I've never met these people neither have

had a contract with them or anything.

Now I am just wondering if that is normal kind of business in the US

or if I am kind of used as a money lauderer or some kind of things.

Any point of vue will be greatly appreciated.
