  1. Hello Photo People -

I realize this is more of a design question - but I noticed that there are a lot

of multi-talented people who comment on here as well. I am converting VHS to DVD

for a lady. She would like me to design a custom cover for the case. However, I

didn't get a whole lot of details on what she would like - and she hard to get a

hold of. The DVD is going to be home-video clips of her son who passed away. She

is going to email some photos (because the tape quality isn't that good) to

    incorporate in the cover.

Any suggestions on a tasteful way to lay this type cover out? I am feeling

apprehensive about putting too much religious art into it. I would like to keep

it simple but I don't know what is a "standard" look for a DVD of a passed

person - especially since he was young.

    Thanks,

    Mercsadies

  2. I would consider it stealing as well, Peter. Especially when it's in a language I can't read, I don't know what they are really doing with it! I would put your name more prominently on your photos when you post them online. Contact the blogger and give them your new images (with your name/watermark). Right now, your name is lost in the image.
  3. Yeah - depending on where you are - I would love to do this type of job! Let me know if you want some hands-on help with ordering your images this once you've shot this. You should definitely be getting paid a bit by the school, since this above and beyond your typical job and you'll have to be fronting some of the money to supply proofs.

I wouldn't hand out CDs. You'll get one angry parent who doesn't know what they are doing with a computer and they are expecting to have just prints.

  4. Hi Lori - When I do images for models, I find out what she is going to be doing with it. I give them a bigger discount if I have my watermark on the image. Most of the girls go for this option. If they know they are mounting them right away or putting them in a portfolio, they usually pay the full price for whatever size image(s). My info is on the back of all my images unless it's a proof - or we've discussed a discount ahead of time.
  5. Hi Josh - I really like your image! I do mostly portrait photography but I also have images that I sell to anyone looking for art. My prices go by size (portrait or art) - my 8x12's are $22. I'll go as large people want them but I do tell them what I recommend the sizes be. As someone else said, if you mount, matt and frame them - charge more for your time, assembly, and expertise on framing. I even buy some of my frames whole sale.

You can check out the rest of my prices at www.epbasten.instaproofs.com and go to the Scenic gallery.

    Hope this helps!

  6. Hmmm ... non-right clickable you say ... I thought I had read somewhere that you could do that ... Fact or Fiction?

I do know that you can slice your posted images so that the person ends up taking only pieces of your image ... and if they sort through all the slices to put back together your image ... all I can say is - congratulations - someone is in love with your work!

  7. I have been using Photoshop CS3 in conjunction with Photoshop CS2. I wasn't

paying too much attention to which version I was using ... as I was quite happy

with the new additions to CS3. But - has anyone had any printing issues with CS3?

I am getting muddy prints (inkjet to regular paper) when before I was happy with

my inkjet printouts. I am only guessing that this is because I used CS3 instead

of CS2. Is anyone else getting this? The files look as they did (in CS2) so I

would have expected the same results. Has anyone sent in lab prints with CS3

yet? Perhaps there is something set differently that I need to change.

  8. Hi Michelle - I do a bit everything (graphic design as well as photography) if you would like to work one on one with a designer. Otherwise, there is always Guru.com (where I look for freelance work). And you have other designers there to choose from. Let me know if I can help!
  9. I suggest checking out the Adobe Exchange for ideas and even some downloads for yourself to play with. If you are looking to buy some borders, I don't know any "specifically Christmas" ones off the top of my head by I have bought border plugins from AutoFX and Alien Skin. If you are just looking for one or a couple, stock image websites have ready made ones for purchase.

    check this out:

  10. I don't see it green on my Powerbook (browser is Safari).

I have had your problem however and it was the lab's fault. Better yet they wanted to fight

me on it. I had done a portrait shoot of a couple. I knew I had everything sent in correctly.

I got back an 8x10 and some smaller photos to cut down myself. The smaller ones were

extremely yellow - almost green. Granted it was outdoors, against green vines. My 8x10 -

perfect. All the prints I had made myself prior to sending in - perfect.

I called. I emailed. I finally had to bring them back and show them to the lab. They said "it

was because of my film." I almost slapped the girl ... I don't shoot film! I have NEVER shot

film. And right after her comment, I whipped out the perfectly colored 8x10 (that they had

done). Needless to say I got the prints redone ... but I didn't expect it to be so much of a

    hassle.

Anyway - my point - ask your lab (nicely at first) if they can take a look at them and see if

it wasn't something malfunctioning on their end. Personally, I have found that the in-town

discount labs are much more rude and not willing to replace prints than online labs, who

    bend over backwards for you.

  11. Hi Adam -

I looked over your site ... and I don't know where you are located but your prices are comparable with studios in my area who have been in business for 5-10 years. So your prices might be a bit high. I also noticed that you have written the prices as $xxx and then in some places as xxx$ this second way they are written is wrong and would make me leery as to the professionalism of any business.

Overall you have a lovely site upon arriving. However, it is very Flash heavy and took about 3 minutes to load on my T1 line. I personally think that is too long. I also didn't like the load time between photos in the gallery. I would rather flip through images at my leisure rather than be led through them with a slide show (if they aren't of my wedding).

    The photos are very beautiful.

  12. Ashley - I'm really interested to find out what brand card you had been using. This happened to me not a week and a half ago. I had a card, that I'd always used ... and all of a sudden I tried to review while on a shoot and my camera told me there was no data! I freaked. I changed cards and continued with the shoot. When I got home and tried to load the damaged card I was able to get all but the handful I had tried to view in-camera.

Granted, my card is more than a few days old (can't go back to the store with mine). But I was always told that formatting a card in-camera is much better than letting your computer software do it. Apparently that wasn't enough for this card. I will not be using Kingston brand again.

  13. Okay - I'm driving myself crazy. I am trying to make a 5x7 jpg that will have 4

    identical wallet photos (2.5 x 3.5). I know I can do this by hand ... I was

seriously disturbed to find that the Automated area in Photoshop didn't have

this as a built in option. So, I attempted making my own Action. It keeps coming

out horribly wrong. And I'm spending more time screwing with this ... when I

could just go in and do the whole folder by hand. But it's driving me crazy

because I know I shouldn't have to! Anyway, anyone with an Action already made

for this? Is there a plugin for this sort of dilema that you go with time and

time again? Picture packaging? Thanks for any suggestions.

PS. I have 50 of these 5x7 to make. And I can see more coming in the future. I

also don't know how to write my own scripts.

  14. At the wedding I just participated in (I was the "family" and pro-backup) the photo sessions went like this:

Bride and bridesmaids all went outside.

    Took shots of bride.

    Bride with each bridesmaid.

Bride with all of the bridesmaids together.

Bride with selected family (parents, sister, brother, mother-in-law ... )

Girls went in ... guys came out.

    Took shots of groom.

    Groom with each groomsman.

    Groom and groomsmen all together.

    Groom with father.

Groom with mother (pinning on the corsage)

Groom with select family members (father-in-law ... )

    Then the Ceremony happened.

Most of the formal shots are already out of the way.

    Bride at the alter.

Bride and groom together before the alter.

    Bride, groom and her family.

    Bride, groom and his family.

At this time, the bride was asked which couples she wanted photos of.

    Her parents.

    Her family (without her)

    Her sister and fiance.

    His parents

    His family (without him)

    His brother and wife.

Just thought I would let you know what we ended up doing. Hope it helps you cover your bases.

  15. Having a website up and available is definitely going to help you out! Brides will be able to see your work (and your packages/prices?) and make an educated decision about you without inconveniencing herself.

Aside from having an excellent web presence, how about taking on a few clients at a discounted price? Letting people actually experience your work and expertise. Hopefully you'll build up a few reputable customers who will pass on their happiest day in your benefit.
