What do you mean with 'better' camera?

-

The finder in the original Leicaflex is by far the best I've seen. Center-focussing is not as much a problem as it seems in theory.

I'd just say you may want to fix two limits. (i) abundance and price. As repairs may break your budged I would stick to only the most common models. Should you lose one of those by any means it will be at least replaceable. (ii) only two to three models/makers. Should you eventually need to repair some, you will be able to use parts from one to fix others.

Late response:
Most flatbed-scanners nowadays are able to scan the complete panoramic neg. The results may be sub-optimal for printing, yet -in my view- sufficient for web presentation. At least as long as the handheld meter is right. I got the old version of the 202 a while back and its a quirky shooter but delivers at least acceptible results (http://henriklein.tumblr.com/). Since no digital swing-lens cameras exist, film is the only way to take this type of pictures.

Olympus mju. No joke. It's just the only camera small enough to get carried everywhere.

Plaubel Makina.

-
-

Well for over 2000$ I'd rather keep using my Makinas - which, btw are less fragile than repeatedly (and falsely) suggested.

-

Michael, why are you trying to bore me with old news? I've been using the Leica R system for more than 20 years now. The S2 is an attempt at the wrong market - and compared to a Hassy too little too late. It's not going to save them!

Leica is a brand with a great history but no substance. It is not clear whether Leica has already realized how serious the financial crisis has become. My guess is that we're witnessing the final collapse of Leica.

>Erwin Putts, Steve Gandy, Tom Abrahamsson, Jonathan Eastland and Roger Hicks. How much value do you place on these individuals opinions?<
None! I only value opinions from people who have come up with relevant work.
-
In a word Nan Goldin tried to copy on Larry Clark (Tulsa) -- and largely failed to.
-
The Plaubels are excellent handheld. I use the W67 version down to 1/30. The mamiya supposedly hs better lenses but is bulky in comparison.
-
>But most 6x7 systems are heavy and bulky.<
Mamíya 7, Plaubel Makina or the 6x9 Fujis with even larger neg size aren't heavy.
-
6x7 with the option to either crop to 6x6 or print full frame. 645 is by all means the lesser format.
-
Why go to all the expense (new camera, computer, printer) and hassle (new programs, calibration, inks...) to obtain - the largely same result?
For those that have the darkroom equipment there is no reason to change. For those who start out in photography it has to be the latest. Hence cultural differences establish. So less options for film users but still plenty.
-
Agree with you mike. The contax shots look way better.
-
The camera and film you are most familiar with. Avoid anything new. The lens that matches your 'view' (just check the keepers). The obvious backup.
But most important: forget about the gear, a follow your view, empathy, responsiveness. Cast away from groups. And, as HCB would say: you mustn't want a picture, just observe and respond.

a good face comes to mind...

>Our average reader is a 40-year-old gearhead with a $100,000 annual salary who plans to spend $3,000 in the next 12 months on camera equipment. <
No word about photography, content, or even art. This site is clearly misnamed. It isn't about photography.

You really don't have to ask this bunch of narrowminded guys, do you?

Well, consider the face recognition software (i.e. Fuji S6500fd), auto framing mode (Casio EX-Z1000), pixel diet (slenderizes someone i.e. HP), revive shot ('restores old pictures' casio), perspective control, pre-shot, advance shake reduction (many) built into digicams. The next step is already at the door in the form of beautification software (google Dr. Leywand, Rehovot, Israel) and tourist remover software (search for futureLAB). You still take your digital pictures for real?
Two Holgas with stuck lens, tried fixing it now both are out of focus...
