1.
I'd just say you may want to fix two limits. (i) abundance and price. As repairs may break your budged I would stick to only the most common models. Should you lose one of those by any means it will be at least replaceable. (ii) only two to three models/makers. Should you eventually need to repair some, you will be able to use parts from one to fix others.

  2.
Late response:
Most flatbed-scanners nowadays are able to scan the complete panoramic neg. The results may be sub-optimal for printing, yet -in my view- sufficient for web presentation. At least as long as the handheld meter is right. I got the old version of the 202 a while back and its a quirky shooter but delivers at least acceptible results (http://henriklein.tumblr.com/). Since no digital swing-lens cameras exist, film is the only way to take this type of pictures.

  4. Why go to all the expense (new camera, computer, printer) and hassle (new programs, calibration, inks...) to obtain - the largely same result?

For those that have the darkroom equipment there is no reason to change. For those who start out in photography it has to be the latest. Hence cultural differences establish. So less options for film users but still plenty.

  5. The camera and film you are most familiar with. Avoid anything new. The lens that matches your 'view' (just check the keepers). The obvious backup.

But most important: forget about the gear, a follow your view, empathy, responsiveness. Cast away from groups. And, as HCB would say: you mustn't want a picture, just observe and respond.

  6. Well, consider the face recognition software (i.e. Fuji S6500fd), auto framing mode (Casio EX-Z1000), pixel diet (slenderizes someone i.e. HP), revive shot ('restores old pictures' casio), perspective control, pre-shot, advance shake reduction (many) built into digicams. The next step is already at the door in the form of beautification software (google Dr. Leywand, Rehovot, Israel) and tourist remover software (search for futureLAB). You still take your digital pictures for real?
