  1. Best viewed at highest resolution where the surrounding filaments

appear as strands of wheat. Only a few shots got over the NYC

Sanitation trucks parked in front of us on the West Side Drive and I

finally got one that was a winner. Ah the ambiance.

  2. A long fought battle, but in the end the snake won. The good news

amphibians are alive and well in the Sunfish pond area of the Delaware

Water Gap NRA. Except for this one.

    Thanks for your critiques

Any comments on lighting, composition or post processing are

appreciated. Strobist approach, CT0 1/2 gel on key light, slight

    Rembrant effect.

This is a very nice shot. I assume you were also guiding the exposure. Was this shot with an out of the box Canon 20D or a 20Da, or did you remove the IR filter from the camera? I thought that much of the light from astronomical objects would be absorbed by the filter and render this type of photography unsatisfactory. I have only done a few exposures with my 20D on my C-8 of planets. I have been discouraged from attempting this type of shot. Also, I live in a light polluted area, so it's a issue to find a site, get there and set up.

Regarding the earlier comment on the fuzzy stars that might distract from the view, I think you are referring to Andromeda's satellite galaxies M32 and NGC205. These are the oval fuzzy objects above and below the main object. No picture of the Andromeda galaxy would be complete without them, even if they were not carefully composed into the picture.

Another thing many people probably don't realize is how big this object really is. At the telescope at low power you usually only see the central core while the outer spiral structure is mostly invisible. The spiral arms and other details are only brought out photographically in long exposures.

Comments regarding the lighting setup or Photoshop work are

appreciated. Lots of skin imperfections removed in Photoshop,

    hopefully not going overboard.

  3. Bigger is usually better until you have to carry it. For now the 70-200 mm with the 1.6X APC sensor is as good as I can do. I do have the 2X teleconverter, but it does lose a bit. The guys with the really big lenses must have some locations with a blind set up. This 70-200 lens gets very heavy I don't know what a 500 weighs in at. Its pretty much as big as you can carry hiking into the woods. I don't think I'll try to carry my Celestron 8 at 2000mm F/8 into the woods. :-)
