Environmental Photograph of Mr Rothery in Portrait 7 Posted July 2, 2009 For my NCFE Certificate in Photography I had to create a Environmental Photograph so I got told by my Granddad of an man called John Rothery who owned a shop next door to the Kings Theatre in Southsea. I took a stroll up to the shop and within that first few seconds of meeting John I knew that he would be the perfect character for my assignment. He was sat at the end of the counter smoking a cigarette with a radiator in-between his legs staring at me. He said "I hope you don't work for the News, Because I threw them out last time", I replied laughing "No" and explained to him my task and he was happy for me to take his photograph as long as he didn’t have to pose. We sat for around 2 hours talking about everything that has happened through his life. He used to be in the Army, He has shook hands with some of the most powerful people in England and is very educated (especially about information on Portsmouth). He offered me a cigarette half way through the conversation, I accepted and it was the most strangest moment because the smoking ban was in place within shops and there was a no smoking sign above my head. You could tell that John lived by old rules and said to me when questioned "The minute someone else pays for my rent and my taxes on this place, then I will stop". The shop was full of all war memorabilia from swords, official Nazi daggers too WW2 rifles, Whilst I was inside I tried to take in the atmosphere of the shop. It felt dusty and dark as there was only one window at the front of the shop and we was stood as far away from it as possible.
