Thanks to all for the reponses so far. Thanks, too, for the article link, richard. i'd not seen this.
looking at the photographs in _Last Journey_, i'd say the lens was a 28 rather than a 24. Morath is photographed several times in this book (she made 3 trips to the Austrian-Slovenian border to explore her ancestral homeland in 2001), and i see two M6 bodies. one has the 35/1.4 pre-asph, and i -think- the second lens is a 28/2.8 elmarit-M. i see she also uses a Canon body with a telephoto lens, too.
i guess this was Morath's last book project before her death in 2002. you can see in some of the photographs of her, that she is dealing with some severe pain. Arthur Miller joins her for at least one of the trips, as does their daughter Rebecca.
i was curious to know whether morath had a favorite lens, but it seems she used various Leica lenses thoughout the years--the 50 earlier, then the 35/1.4 and 28 later. perhaps there were more that she used regularly. regardless of lens choice, i like the photographs she made with them.
thanks again, kim

i've been reading a lot about inge morath (magnum photographer, 3rd
wife of Arthur Miller, etc.), and in reading her book _Last
Journey_, i was trying to determine what lenses she used when
shooting these photographs. One lens definitely looks to be a
35/1.4 (pre-asph), but i can't tell if her other camera (an M6) has
a 28 or a 24 on it.
anyone here know Inge Morath's most used (favorite?) lenses?
thanks for your time.

frank, i've never used an M5, so i can't really comment on how it compares, but i can tell you
(although it will seem heresy to some) that my M4P (chrome) is as quiet an M body as i have
every owned. it's solid, not at all tinny, and quiet. the framelines, fwiw, are very easy to see
(easier to see than in the M6HM i used to own). go figure.

neil--yes, i meant by "latest" version that i had downloaded the service pack 2. wonder if THAT is part (or all?) of our problem??
kim

neil,
i'm having the same problem you are....i haven't yet purchased a card reader (will do that tomorrow), but my computer won't 'read' the RAW files as being on the 20D via the USB cable . i have the newest version of XP, and i'm hoping the recent 'upgrade' isn't part of my problem. my 20D still has the original 1.4 firmware. i don't know that upgrading to 1.5 will help. if you figure it out, i hope you'll let me know what you did to 'fix' the problem! good luck to us both, eh? kim

for those looking for mark's plungercam page, here's the page itself (sorry, though, the links from this page are dead).

my apologies: i was writing from memory. the caption reads "our cat Ulysses and Martine's shadow"
kim

interestingly, you have all described the silhouette of the person as MALE (or as a bust, and not even a person), but if you read the caption on the print, it is titled "our cat and martine's shadow."
martine is hcb's wife. ;-)
i think of this as a photo taken by a man (who happens to be famous) of his cat and his wife.
i like it.

john and karim,
thanks again for the help. i was able to download the software from the site karim posted. 7.6.84 is working fine.
i'll let Ed know, too.
best, kim
-
thanks to both of you, but alas, my email software BLOCKED the attachment John sent me.
i'll try your option, too, karim. i really appreciate it.
yes, i think Ed thinks i'm using the MAC OS (though i mentioned i have Windows XP); i replied to Ed saying i could see the 7.6.84 version for mac users, but that i have windows and can't find what he's suggesting i do. haven't heard back from him, but maybe i will....

hi folks,
i'm a long time vuescan user (scanning my leica negs, to keep this
on topic <g>), and i recently loaded version 8.0, but....i can't get
it to work at all. it comes up on screen, but when it's time for
the neg. carrier to enter the scanner, it seems as though it's going
to work, but then it gets hung up and the program stops working. i
use an older minolta scanner (dual scan II) and windows xp, and
after having no luck w/version 8.0, i wrote ed hamrick to see if he
knew of a bug with 8.0. he said he didn't, but that it was
possible. he then asked me to re-load version 7.6.84, but i can't
seem to find it on ed's website. i asked him for a link (separate
email), but the response i got was "it's on the vuescan website."
i have re-loaded the minolta drivers and deleted and re-loaded
version 8.0 twice (and yes, i remeoved the old .ini file), but so
far no go.
i feel silly not being able to find the link to 7.6.84 on Ed's site,
so if any of you can help me find it, i'd be very thankful. ;-) i
just want to get back to scanning my negs....
thanks much.

i like fountain pins too....i think i have about fourteen, all told, but...my faves are my sheaffer crest (discontinued several years back) and my OMAS Damas in Arco (tortoise color).
the sheaffer is the pen i use most, for i love its size, weight and nib the best of all my pens. the OMAS was a gift from a friend, and i treasure it, but i'll admit to using the Sheaffer the most...

john,
thanks so much for the kind words.
those two boys (and their sisters) have gotten pretty used to "aunt kimmy" and her camera over the years (since each was born, really).
that said, the light was right that afternoon, and they were also in a 'quiet' way. i'm just glad it all came together. ;-) kim

well, i have a 35/1.4 pre-asph, and i keep wondering why folks say it's not good wide open. mine, for the record, is FINE. maybe it's because mine is a late issue 35/1.4 pre-asph. don't know, don't really think much about it (except when i see postings about the lens saying it's flare-prone or extra soft wide open). i own the 35/1.4 asph and also the 35/2 pre-asph, and i find them ALL wonderful lenses, if with somewhat different footprints.
won't be selling mine, that's for sure....
