I love the moody side lighting and the nice specular highlights.
The books really add something interesting and different to a food shot like this.
I love this picture!

Your analysis is likely right on. I'd be happy to help in any book.

Thank you Andre! I've actually have been contacted by the SPD wanting to use my photo collection for training purposes (on one hand well trained police actually make it safer for protestors, on the other hand NO!). The pic is much better (sharper, dynamic range) than what appears on the web.

Andre, is it possible that you have a big chip on your shoulder? Some of your posts would suggest so.

I was the only civilian in the immediate area and my hair is pretty much how it was when I was in the Army.
Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately, I didn't have my big flash on me so I had to use fill flash in photoshop to bring out the detail in the gentleman's face.
He was very nice, we chatted for a while about what was going on in other parts of DC and thanked him for the portrait shot.
To bad his fingers didn't make it in the shot.

Hey WJ,
They don't use CS or CN in a situation like this. The tear gas projectiles aren't that effective in an open area. The Seattle Police learned that during the 1999 WTO riots.
It's either loaded with a dense foam projectile with can create some brutal wounds at close range or it's loaded with a plastic projectile that has a foam cap. Inside the plastic projectile is either pepper powder or liquid that releases upon impact.
I always tell people not to worry about the tear gas, the most it really does is clear your sinuses. Now pepper, that's another story!

Old shot of a guy being sucker punched by a cop. This is just before
the punch actually lands. Tri-X at 1600.

Elephants in the Amsterdam zoo. Looks like they like each other!

A yellow globe with refelection. I put a cigar box at an angle
behind the globe to add something to the background.

Plague Talisman from the Reichs Museum, Amsterdam. Existing light.

Pepper spray shot from the 2002 LEIU riot in downtown Seattle, WA,
USA. This was taken in low light with Tri-X pushed to 1600 in
Diafine on a 50mm f1.4 lens. I then put the negative on a small
light board and took a picture of it with a DiMAGE 7. At the end of
the pepper spray stream you can see someone holding up a two finger
peace sign. I couldn't hold still in the spot I was in at the time
so the pic is slightly soft.

Hey Peter,
Drop down and get in closer. Fill up the frame with the food in a shot like this. A flash for your camera that allows you to do a ceiling flash bounce would help with the flat lighting problems.
The food display itself looks interesting- it would make for a fun photo shoot!
