Actually, the scratches are on the aluminum surface. I scanned my print rather than the original negative; maybe I should have a) scanned the negative and manipulated it in PS, or b) applied a stronger Unsharp Mask.

This is from a series of studies in B&W and color of this piece of

machinery, but I think the B&W shots worked better with the bright,

    sharp (literally!) aluminum.

Maybe crop and print so the horizon is level? And move to the right so the buildings are clearly framed by the cranes (unless you fall off the building doing so!)

The strongest sense in this photo are the vertical lines, the street and the smokestack(?). If you have a chance do take the shot again, I would try very hard to level the camera and keep the lines parallel (if possible), it's the only distraction that keeps it from being a truly great shot.
  1. I would have stopped the lens down as far as possible to try to get the vasculature of the far petal (top left) into focus. A little bit of creative curving might bring out the shadow detail in the white petals at 12 and 3 o'clock as well.

I really like the image of the girl-- she looks almost superimposed on the photo, like a double exposure. (I don't like the redeye, though-- I would have eliminated that later.)

    Cheers,
