  1. I disagree with those, that see this as a bells&wistles thing (like Bob):

The movie mode on the D90 is spectacular. The reason however is not, that you have a DSLR and a video camera in one body, and take short movies during vacation. The groundbreaking novelty is that it gives you video recording capabilities, that where on the 20k+ side before the D90. (a digi-video cam doesn't come close to this)

    - a n almost full frame sensor (which is huge in the video world),

    - access to excellent lenses,

    - a look like movie, with shallow depth of field.

    - noone cares about the sound, because its recorded seperately anyway

    - noone cares about the 5 minute restriction

I think the impact of this feature will not be in the classic DSLR market. The impact will be in the indy-film market. For 2k you can now buy the package, instead of renting it for at least the same price for a few days.

So no, the D90 will not kill photography, it will hurt Arri, Panavision, probably RED, and for sure small movie equipment rental companies, who will have to come up with something new quickly.

  2. Considering what advances might bring (not specifically the leaked 50D specs) and bobs comment about their influence on the number of keepers: I think (wishfull thinking, naturally) that what we are going to see is improvements in the user interface - and there is plenty of room here:

    - I want a HUGE viewfinder. look through a CANON A1 and you know what you are missing with the DSLR viewfinders. They have improved, but here really bigger = better

... actually thats about it. They could make them smaller, less noisier (thinking leica M here), and give all of them a full-frame sensor. From a sensor and bells and wistles point of view we have about reached the point where it just works.

  3. Hi,

With 1/10th or 1/20th you will definitely have effects of subject movement (you will notice first on the fur), if you are doing portraits, where the face almost fills the frame.

Keep in mind, that with an apeture of 1:1,8, only a part of the face will be in focus (e.g. either the eyes, or the nose tip, not both)

So maybe a flash + something to bounce it against is the best solution.

(maybe this has been mentiond, I did not read all responses)

  4. With 50mm and portraits, I find, that the subjects movement is almost as relevant as the handshake.

If you buy an IS lens, currently there is non with an aperture of 1.8, so you will have to use slower shutter speeds. The IS will probably take care of your hand-shake, but the subject movement will most likely be worse than with your current lens if you tend to use it wide open.

  5. I would second that suggestion: Try DxO Filmpack!

I tried the Demo Version for a week now, and consider buying it. The effects are stunning. Especially if you are interested in B/W photography, their simulated film types are as you remember them. TriX, Delta400, Tmax,... far better looking than I could achieve with contrast/curve/colormixing fiddling. Even the filmgrain is very natural (not just added noise).

One ting though is that the colors are slightly over-saturated i.e. kind of clip, with my 400D files, I don't know why. (maybe someone here knows?)

    Anyway try it: www.dxo.com

    best

  6. Hi Denis,

although not the silky-smooth-vanishing-towards-infinity kind of bokeh yuo are referring to, I like the out of focus regions a lot in this image. Especially the very sharp edges of the blurs.

    definitely cool!

    best regards

  7. Hi,

Can the Rollei 100xl falsh be used on a Leica M6 without frying any

electronics? I have searched the forum and didn't find an answer.

I guess the interface is standard on both the M6 and the 100xl so it

should be no problem, but before trying I wanted to ask. (of course

there won't be ttl or anything)

    thanks a lot!

  8. o.k. these are just my 2 cents as a nonexecutive comfortably relaxing in my chair - what about the following: produce an ultra cheap leica (swatch philosophy) no leather, 2 framelines, no lightmeter but instead sun-clouds-indoors-symbols (o.k. in addition to the usual shutter times), no leather, no colour choice, no flash shoe, no engraving, no serial number (woah), no auto adjusting parallax error compensation, no 'I will last beyond the life time of my owner' metal frame, no tripod mount, ...

just a light tight box with a huge 1x range finder and m-mount!

+ eventually a 50mm lens with aspherical 'glas' made out of plastic.

thats LOMO, thats for people who enjoy photographing without bothering for fundamental (theoretical) questions.

  9. Hi,

the story: I want to buy a canon EF 100mm 1:2 lens, and I am

wondering wether its focal lenght changes while you focus from

infinity to a closer point, in particular to distances like 1.5 - 2m.

The old manual focus FD 100 2.8 seems to stay the same, with the 28-

105, 3.5-4.5 usm there is quite a difference when focusing to closer

distances in the 105mm position, it looks more like a 80 something

mm. Someone in this forum has mentioned that it has something to do

with inner focusing of canon lenses. so my question is:

Does the focal length change when focusing the 100m/2 lens to

different distances, and if yes will it be as noticable as with the

    28-105?

Thanks a lot for your answers!

    merry christmas
