1.
I will let you guys fight this out since you both know much more than I do. I have a call out to my lawyer to see if she knows anything more. From what Michael is saying I would be able to use a photo of an adult posing for me but an adult talking to another guest and I snap a shot without their knowledge would not be usable without consent. Even if a child poses for the camera I would not be able to use the photo without the parents permission. I would have thought that Michael's original post where he stated that anyone coming to an event with a visible photographer would automatically consent to be photographed would make sense (I understand the law doesn't work on logic).

 2.
Thank you Michael. This is what I thought but wanted someone with more experience to weigh in. Appreciate your reply. I would for sure take comply if someone approached me about a picture they were uncomfortable with.
One more quick question if you don't mind. A while back I wasn't using a contract and therefore I don't have written consent to use pictures of my clients. A few older pictures I want to use are of the clients children at a Bar Mitzvah. I did my best to reach out to the client but have not heard back. Is it better to be safe and not use them or use them and take them down if they ever contact me with a concern?

 3.
Hi,
I was wondering what's common practice for using photos from a wedding for a photographer website. My clients sign a contract giving me the right to use any and all photographs from an event for promotional use. However, many of my pictures are of guests and their children. These people never signed anything and have no idea that they can be published on my site. I think technically I have the legal right to post them but I don't want angry guests who could have potentially been future customers. I would obviously only post flattering photos because I want to make myself look good as well. The real issue I'm having is posting little children without consent from their parents. It would be impossible to track down the parents and get permission after the event. What do you guys do? Thanks.

 4.
There aren't many D800Es on the CL NY/NJ market from what I've seen so I'm not sure.

How do I check for the left focusing issue? I want to make sure it doesn't have a focus issue before I buy it but it really doesn't bother me at all because I always use center spot focusing. I guess it would just hurt my resale value.

 5.
Hi, I've had the D70s, D300 and more recently bought a D700. I paid $1,425 for the D700 which I now realize was super cheap. I figured I could sell the D700 for a profit and buy the D800 for a little more money. I certainly don't need the D800 but I'm always looking out for the resale value and in a few years the D800 will hold it's value a little better. I sold the D700 for $1,750 and have an offer from a guy selling a D800 for $2,000. It is only has 6k actuations and comes with box and in mint condition. Is this a good price. There are people on CL pricing from $2,200 all the way up to $2,600 for the D800. Why is there such a big markdown? I'm thinking that all the pros jumped on the D800 and then decided to go back to the D700. That might be why the D700 is selling used on ebay for almost as much as the D800. Any theory on this? I probably should have just kept the D700 instead of always trying to upgrade. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

 6.
List of equipment being used in my setup:
Dynalite M1000wi with two heads
Nikon D700
Nikon 70-200
Pocketwizard
Sekonic L358

I've been using this setup for a long time now. I recently changed out my D300 for the D700. I've always shot portraits with two lights with umbrellas. My setting or usually 100 ISO, Shutter 125 and aperture about 5.6 - 8.0. This has always worked well for me until recently. I setup everything as described above. When I test the light it will give me an aperture of 5.6 or around there but when I take the picture they are completely overexposed. I turn the camera up to 22 but they are still overexposed. Does this sound like an issue with the Dynalite? Can the regulation on it be fault and therefore putting out full power every time? The camera with my Nikon flash works perfectly.
Thanks,
7.
I am sorry that I have not responded earlier. My email notifications seemed to have been disabled and I was not aware that people were still spending their valuable time replying to my post. I hope you guys aren't too upset. My screen was never calibrated in the past and I never had a problem. I guess this is my fault but I'm not shooting high end print work that it ever really mattered. I will take your advice and buy the Spyder to make sure that there are no issues on my end. The lab reprinted the images with no corrections on my part other than cropping. The colors were better but still not very pleasing. The lab is being very difficult which shouldn't be the case even if it is my fault. I will be printing my next job with a new lab. I am looking ad Bay Photo even though they are a little more expensive than my current lab. Thank you all again for all your help.

 8.
They came highly recommended by a well know photographer in my area. I guess his prints are closer to perfect than mine. I sent in my last print job without any edits and they are going to reprint. I'll see how they come out. If they are less than perfect I'll switch labs. I agree they should be adjusting to correct any issues and at the very least calling me when they see the problem. They just printed the job and sent to me without any notification. They when I called into complain they told me they know what the problem is. The more I write the more I realize that you guys are right "find a new lab". Thank you all for your help. Mike

 9.
Hi,

I am a very part time photographer and recently switched labs, as I was unhappy with the turn around time on the other lab. I use an FTP to upload my images in JPEG. I shoot in raw and edit in lightroom 4. My prints weren't coming back the way I had hopped so I called the lab for some trouble shooting. The are telling me that I should only crop and no other editing should be done. I asked how they can make adjustments properly after I have already converted the raw files to jpeg. In a nice way they said you know how to shoot the pictures and we know how to print them. He went on to tell me how they have special software to handle the adjustment. He continued to tell me that my adjustments were messing up their computer system making the photos look bad. I thought that once out of raw you can no longer make serious adjustments without major quality loss. Should I switch labs or am I the one who doesn't know what I'm talking about?
Thanks,
Mike

 10.
I just bought the lens. It's in perfect condition. I wouldn't even know it was used from the looks of it. I doubt the vignetting will bother me coming from an 18-200 consumer lens. The VRII would be great but I could hardly afford this lens. The used VRII are going for $1,800 and more.
Thank you all again for your help. Now I have to find a 24-70 used for a decent price.

 11.
Andy, thanks for the reply. The f4 seems to be on back order and as you mentioned I can always sell the 2.8 in a few months with hardly if any loss.
Brian, I don't take Ken too seriously and that's why I'm talking to you guys (the pros). Does Ken get his equipment free or does he just play with them in the store and post reviews. I wish I could make a living doing that. LOL.

 12.
Thanks for the reply. Old Nikon lenses seem to increase in value. Maybe the VRI will be worth $3k in a few years hahaha. I looked at the f4 but it's still $1,400 new. I'm paying $200 less and still getting the extra stop. Ken Rockwell seems to think the f4 is wonderful but I don't know anyone who personally has it yet. I can't seem to find any used yet either but I'm assuming they won't go for much less than new.

 13.
Hi All,
I've been shooting part time for many years and never had any complaints from my clients. I was shooting with a D300s for many years with a basic 18-200 VR lens. I recently bought a D700 and now want to buy good quality glass. I was considering the 80-200 two ring version but seems like the price has gone up since I owned one 7 years ago. The VRII is a little too much money for me. The same guy I bought the D700 from is also selling a VRI in perfect mint condition for $1,200. Am I making a mistake by not going for the newest and best? Or should I just buy the cheaper 80-200? I only shoot about 5 jobs a month. Thanks for the help.
14.
I am currently using a Nikon 18-200 VR lens for my work which is mostly Bar Mitzvahs. Knowing that this lens is not ideal for this type of work, I have been looking for a pro lens. I found someone who will sell me the Nikon 17-55 for only $650. Trying to keep costs down, I was thinking about selling off my Nikon 18-200 to help buy the 17-55 and buying the Tamron 18-200 to give me a full range lens. Is this a good trade off? In the future I will consider buying the 80-200 although I will be missing a critical range between 80 to 120. Any advice? Thanks for your help.

 15.
Here are two samples from the shoot. What I didn't even realize was that they wouldn't allow me to use a flash. I snuck in a few shots with flash but mostly shot at high ISO and low shutter speed. In addition they wouldn't let me come within 7 feet of the chair since a razor was in use.

00XdyK-299733584.thumb.jpg.32d7fbb660bb09297659f3d0099caa07.jpg

 16.
We are going to the shoot in the middle of the day and therefore I will not have time to setup prior. I work in finance and photography is just a side gig for me. The particular employee has a part in a presentation so they want to flash some of these pictures on the big screen. They decided the location so I can assume that this theme will fit in with the other shots already taken. I guess I could stop by the barber today or tomorrow just to get a feel for the place.

 17.
My office hires a pro studio once a year to do a photo shoot. The pictures are used during a company wide offsite meeting at a hotel. There was one employee that was not in the office the day of the shoot and they asked me to photograph him. The shoot is on Monday and I just found out that it will take place in a barber shop. I guess it goes along with the theme (supposed to be funny) of the offsite meeting. Generally, I shoot Bar & Bat Mitzvahs, which I would imagine are very different. Since we only have a 15 minute time slot and I will have virtually no setup time, how would you suggest I go about lighting and setup. Instead of bringing my Dynalite strobes I was going to setup an SB-600 to light the background and my on camera SB-900 bounced up. I will shoot RAW. Any other advice or tips? There will be a creative guy with me but your suggestions are appreciated.

 18.
When using the dual memory slots on the Nikon D300s does it matter if the main card and backup card are the same speed? Also does the backup feature slow down the camera in general since it has to save it to two sources? I was looking at a 200x compact flash card which would seem to be fast enough for my shooting.

 19.
Thank you all for contributing. I think I am going to stick with my D300 although I still feel that the market is moving to FX. Just the fact that there is only one pro f2.8 lens for the DX format shows that Nikon isn't sure either. If I only want to use pro glass I am forced to use the 17-55 but then have a large gap to my 80-200. What do others do? I don't feel comfortable walking around with two cameras at an affair.
