  1. Thanks for the kind words, Arthur. The Dix River is a tributary of the Kentucky River. This was shot not far from their confluence, about 35 miles southwest of Lexington. The closest town with a post office is Burgin, KY. That area of the Kentucky River is called 'The Palisades', sort of a gorge, characterized by high karst limestone walls on both sides. It's quite picturesque, but a little challenging to access by land.

Great color, lighting, and background! I might have cropped off her right nostril - I find it slightly distracting, but that's just me. Otherwise, it's simply beautiful.

Beautiful, powerful, and mournful. It made me think of the souls of those who see no escape from their troubles but to hope and dream, the spirits of those who died in refugee and internment camps around the world, and Robert Stroud.

Image is blown ut right behind the bug's head and low. White spot on the top edge is distracting. Upper half of background is quite noisy. More DoF for the bug's body would have been nice. Good colors, good camera position. Head somehow doesn't appear sharp...was this image heavily cropped?

Nice texture study. Tonal range compliments the image. More DoF is needed in the center of the 'web' of plant needle clusters. It puts an optical hole in the middle of the composition, and my eye moves randomly around the rest. Fix the DoF, hold in the middle, and it's an interesting image. Nice B&W conversion.

    Artsy or Fartsy ?

Hi Mark. Sorry it took so long for me to view this...I seldom look at my portfolio and missed your comment. My sincerest apologies for that. With some time and reflection, I think if you turned this sideways to the left, it'd look like abstract waves and a swimming polar bear or seal...very artsy in my book. What kind of wood was the original view?
  2. I was going through my images here, and just now saw your comment. You're very perceptive. I think the 'futuristic' look comes from the pattern of intersections and curves of the stone wall and sidewalks and the overall 'look' of an architect's concept drawing (suggesting what's yet to be built). My intent was to do an HDRI of the scene to get exactly that 'look'. As it worked out, I was able to do it with a single exposure. Although the image was an experiment and needs improvement, your comment validates the idea behind the image, and that's huge to me. Thank you very much, Gail !

I'd have edited to get a single specular highlight for each eye, and made the pupils black. I find the small white highlights in the pupils very distracting. Otherwise, a nice, cute image that tells a story.
  3. Not sure if its lens distortion, camera angle, or my screen, but it looks tilted slightly to the left. Otherwise, beautiful. I like what you did with the color. I might have removed the power poles and wires to give it an 18th century look.

    A Hard Life

I think the lower part should be cropped more, eliminating the light-toned flowers/foliage and simplifying the scene. It has strong graphic elements and should be kept as simple and direct as possible.I also think this could benefit from some darkening of the sky to bring out the clouds more, but that could be my laptop screen. Nice overall composition and capture. Good job waiting out the clouds.

I like the composition, but it's obviously and distractingly crooked. If the scene were straighter, the man would appear bent over more, and make a stronger statement. I also think it's too light, especially in background around the man. To me, with darker foliage and deeper tone in the wood building behind the man, this would be a powerful image.

    Dimensions

Usually, I'm not a fan of the reflection dividing line in the middle of the frame. For me, it's hard to tell if the subject is the mountains or the reflection. IMO, a crop/movement up or down would be great for this image. Interestingly, to my eye, parts of the reflection look clearer than the rest of the scene, particularly the mountain on the right.
  4. IMO, the other bird should be removed in post (distracting) and the sky darkened/more saturated. There's also just a bit too much open sky on the left side of the frame.

I like the viewing angle, the composition, and the colors. More depth of field (closest flowers and bugs) would make this image outstanding, IMO.

    Visions

I really think this one is too realistic to be an abstraction, and too uninteresting to be a seascape. Perhaps if the photo were cropped to eliminate the foreground wave (up to just below the breaking wave off the beach, above the bottom third of the frame), and/or a much longer exposure used. They sky also has a tinge of yellow to it above the horizon, perhaps from the time of day, air pollution, or the crummy monitor on my laptop. I think it should be intensified or removed in post. Nice concept.
