Idea is good. But it almost ends there. Flash too strong. Almost nothing in focus, and the pine cone covers too much of the frame. Learn hyperfocal distances if you can control that in your camera. The bluish spot on the lower right doesn't help either.

Technique is good, I like the lighting and exposure. But probably the subject is not perfect. With the picture being mid-tones overall, I find the top part of the white section of the pepper a little distracting. Also the left side of the pepper is so shiny it actually reflects some objects in the studio. A pepper with a better simmetry would be good too.

Nice colors. Wiould have preffered a more simple object in the foreground. The simpler the better here, so it would work better as an abstract picture.

Do I find thise capture interesting? Definetely. Photography is not only about capturing light, but also seeing beauty or interest in common things. This is a good example that photography is much about observing.

Good technique. I'd prefer no highlights in the leaves (upper right leaf) and that the soft light was in the entire image. Having drastic light changes, like in the left leaf makes the impression that the backgound in not real. Like if the image was cropped from somewhere and pasted over a black background.

Perfect focus, great colors, and composition. Only thing I would dare to critizice is the green background at lower right. If all the background was black it would be much better.
  1. There are several ways the scene would have been captured as a better photo. One that quickly comes to my eyes is making the horse's feet appear in the frame. It's a shame they're not. Also, we don't know what she is looking at. In this case it would've been better to get all the action in the frame, anyway, as a portarait it doesn't work that well beacuse the background is somewhat cluttered. By the way, a horse's feet in movement is something very artistic to photograph, try it next time

I would say that never frame a face in a portrait. Either show some of the background (to put the subject in context) or only a part of the face (makes a stronger case for the subject's mood).
  2. I have a couple years taking pictures with regularity, altough not frequently enough. I still lack the expertise to correctly critique a photograph, but every time a new POW comes up I would expect it to be a picture that calls the attention of the average viewer, without the need to go very deep in details or get too technical to find where the merits of the picture lie.

Maybe this is a very good picture in technical aspects, but it doesn't give me much in terms of visual interest. Just my humble opinion.

  3. People portraits are meant to show a mood, or action. This is basically a picture of a helmet, especially considering that the eyes are not well defined. If the eyes had more detail and not into the shadows, the picture would greatly improve, even more if you made the eyes the subject; like in this new composition. That's MHO.

  4. Now I see. The picture of the week awards are given according to the mood of the team selecting the pics. Not that the picture is bad, but the best in a week ? I don't think so. It is even harder for me to rate it...
