  1. Turns out that the K20D is a *major* upgrade overthe K10D in many ways -google Carl Weese's series on it in The Online Photographer. Smarter AWB, much better AF accuracy especially in low light, a unique feature that allows you to correct back or front focus errors for specific lenses (and the camera remembers them) lower noise, more natural color and on and on. With the current discount, less than a grand and well worth it IMO.
  2. Miserere, i think 3 lenses is about the maximum I can reasonably expect to learn, so have only DA 21, FA 35 and DA 70. this translates to 32, 52 and 105mm equivalents. If the projected DA 15 is light and compact, i'll substitute it fort he 21, if I can afford to. Only the FA 35 was bought new. In practice it is the lens that stays on the camera and gets used 90% of the time. I have no road map but have decided to try to follow HCB's precept that "A strict economy of means is necessary to achieve simplicity of expression." Maybe it'll work.
  3. Miserere, why on earth had "I had finally resigned myself to never buy" the great FA 35mm f2? It's an amazing bargain, sharp wide open and with the lovely delicate signature of a 7-element rigid or dual-range Summicron for only $300. A better fast normal for street shooting could scarcely be imagined. You should have no qualms at all about owning both 35s -they serve quite different purposes.
  4. Scott: yes i did shoot the 31 and 35 side by side. The 31 had the edge on contrast, the 35 smoother bokeh, i thought. But i was slightly put off by how much heavier the 31 was for the same max aperture, and felt there wasn't enough difference between the two to justify the very considerable added cost. I put the bucks I saved towards a 70 f2.4 which i think is flat out wonderful, no downside at all.
  5. This is my fault. I bought one from Amazon two weeks ago for $50 more. The Pentax marketing execs track me and when they noticed I had caved in they said "We must lower the price again so Kelly will feel like a jackass."
  6. Getting ready to sell myK10D, i went to page 210 in the manual and followed

instructions to reset the camera to its factory defaults in both rec and custom

function menus. Then i turned the mode dial to the green setting. I don't

remember where it was when i bought the camera, I always shoot in AV. i turned

the camera off, and an hour later, prior to removing the battery and packing up

the camera and its accessories, switched it on just to check. To my dismay the

status screen still showed AV. And it continues to do so no matter what i set

the mode dial to. have i failed to do a complete reset?

  7. In his multi-part examination of theK20D over on The Online Photographer, Carl Weese said he didn't think the extended dynamic range feature should be left on as a default setting, because it makes some captures look "plastiky" like they'd been worked over with heavy noise reduction. But not all. i didn't fully understand his explanation but i bet we are in for a bit of a trip getting a real handle on this feature.
  8. I came to my K10D from a Nikon F100 which had very accurate autofocus. I thought the K10D hunted a bit more but was decent. However, i am upgrading to a K20D partly because not only is it faster and more accurate, it allows you to dial in compensation if it has a front or back focus problem with any given lens. And it remembers this compensation and applies it every time that lens is remounted on the body! If you get back into Pentax, you might want to spend a bit more -theK20 D has many such features as yet undreamt of in Nicanon land.
  9. Tim, i'm about to put my still in warranty K10D, with a spare battery and two SD cards among other extras, up on eBay so i can upgrade to a K20D. I'd rather it went to a forum member and I *hate* dealing with eBay. If you want it at the low end of your budget email me at dmkeditor@comcast.net.
  10. Cory, it's a beautiful day here in NE Oregon and anybody I know who might host an image for me is out paragliding, skiing or running a river. Would it be OK for me to email you the image? if so, let me know at: dmkeditor@comcast.net
  11. Since i never delete in camera, have never previewed or needed to clean the sensor i can at least say "less than a thousand"actuations. K20D has a special B&W mode, K10D only a filter applied after capture. And according to Carl Weese's TOP article AF is much improved, with less hunting in low light and much better ability to focus on narrow objects instead of the background.
