People that know I?m a photographer often ask me for book suggestions for all sorts of topics such as studio lighting, macro, portraits, etc. A friend of mine recently asked me what I thought would be a good general book for a beginner in order to help them become a better photographer. This is what I recommend:
New Manual of Photography by John Hedgecoe
This is a great introductory book to photography. The book starts out with basic concepts, explaining what a camera is, how it works, describing the physical parts as well as explaining the differences between camera types like a point and shoot, medium format, SLR etc. The book then moves into elements of photography covering topics such as lenses, lens types, filters, focusing, exposure, depth of field, shutter speeds, etc. As you proceed deeper into the book, you?ll find it covers other topics such as what makes a great photo, composition, color etc. There is even an excellent section on special projects such as photographing landscapes, still life, people etc. Overall, this is an wonderful book covering a wide range of photography topics from the very basics to more advanced topics and includes an amazing selection of great photos throughout. I still refer to the copy on my shelf to find answers to questions and to help get back to the basics.

Keep in mind as well if you registered your domain name for your website with your personal home address, anyone one can look that info up.

I've read other posts that in some countries the pro must own at least two pro bodies, pro lenses etc. I've also heard that you need to have a current NPS member sign off on the application. Is any of this needed for the US? I'd like to join as a pro but don't know if anyone in NPS that could sign me off since I'm a freelancer. This would be good news if I could write them a letter to join.

Magazine recommendations

I subscribe to Shutterbug magazine because they seem to focus on new products, reviews etc. I also subscribe to Outdoor Photographer because much of my work is nature/wildlife. I'd recommend Shutterbug for the product stuff and then finding a second magazine that covers your niche in a little more detail.
