  1. hello,

i have trouble when i use the 100-400 canon lens at sunset or something. sometimes the lens cannot focus at all and then there is always

some kind of double image like double exposure. could it have to do with the IS? my 24-105 IS lens has no such troubles...

maybe somebody here knows the problem...

    greetings!

  2. hello,

i recently bought the 100-400 lens used without an instruction manual. sadly canon does not offer a

    manual for download either.

i did some research on the web but found different statements on how to use the 2 modes. is mode 2 just

for panning, or for all moving objects? is ist just for vertical mode or for both? i do more panning in

horizontal mode than in vertical mode.

how about taking pics of object that are approaching me (i do lots of motorcycle photography)? mode 1 or

    2?

hope someone here can enlighten me.

    cheers!

  3. hello,

yes, but i want to make selections on the P-3000 and delete the pics I don't need. I often take

10-20 shots of something (bad light or fast moving objects) and then later select. but

making the selection on the camera is not so easy sometimes and that is one thing i would

like to have the P-3000 for. but then if I can't delete the pics I would have to switch back and

forth all the time between camera and P-3000 to select and delete or start making long lists

etc. anyway it would be cool to be able to shoot as much as I want and then select and delete

on the P-3000. I do long journeys of several weeks sometimes and then I shoot a lot and if I

don't delete a lot of the pics even 40GB are not going to do....

  4. hello,

i am thinking about buying an epson p-3000 but would like to know if it is possible to delete pics on it? it

is nice to get a better idea on how the pics look and then decide which ones to keep and delete the ones i

don't need. and if it is possible to delete, does the camera (EOS 5D) still accept the CF card after the

changes are made? I once deleted some pics on my notebook from the CF card and then had to reformat

the CF card later because the camera would not accept the changes made without the right software...

    hope somebody knows.

    greetings!

  5. hello,

when i travel i would like to have a device that allows me to look a the my shots in more detail than the

screen on the back of my 5D. something like the Sansa view (from san disc) but it would need a CF card

slot and not a SD card slot. it would not hurt to be able to store pics on it too.

strangely i could not find anything like it though some device like this surely would be interesting to a lot

of photographers who travel a lot and don't always take their laptops along.

but maybe here knows of some device that might work for me.

    greetings!

  6. hello,

thanks for the quick responses. i had a 5D from canon for the last 5 months but had to

return it recently. i liked it a lot but dust is a major problem for me. i work for motorcycle

mags and have to change lenses all the time in often very dusty environments. lately i had

to clean the seonsor very often und that was a pain in the butt. so the 5D with the new

sensor cleaning system would be the perfect thing for me. if i would have to wait long time

i would just buy a used one now and upgrade later but if there are rumors or infos about

an upgrade coming any time soon i might be able to wait and return to slides for a some

time. after all i worked with them for years.

OT: I am glad you liked my page. i was in taiwan in the summer but just very briefly. i

always wanted to produce a story there as it seems to be a really nice place. maybe i come

    around next year.... :-)

  7. Hello,

I want to buy a 5D but hope to get one with the new Canon integrated cleaning system. I know that so far

only the 400D has such a system but it is obvious that all models will be upgraded sooner or later and I

wanted to know if anybody has an idea (or maybe even definite information) about when the 5D will be

available with such a integrated cleaning system?

Hope there are some information or at least some rumors out there...

    Greetings!

  8. thanks again for all the answers!

the main reason to change to digital was to have faster results and work less on the pics.

it used to be a lot of work with the slides especially because i had to scan them in and

then work them over with CS2.

now i was first so possitivly surprised with the sharpness and lifeliness of my RAW pics in

DPP . that has gotten kind of a damper in the last days as i find out, that the quality i can

achieve in DPP with just 2 or 3 clicks requires a lot of knowledge and time in CS2 just to

get to the same result. of course CS2 offers million ways to work on files that DPP doesn't.

and i have to admit that i am not an CS2 expert. i use it for years now and know my way

around on the functions that matter to me. but it is time consuming. and having seen

experts at work, they too need quite some time. maybe DPP is a muss less sofisticated

software but the results to me are increduble. but that does not help if i can't export

    them...

i did some trials now and shot in RAW and high Jpeg. then i lined a significant detail of the

pic up in RAW and Jpeg and Tiff in both programms. here are the results:

best by far the RAW in DPP

then comes the Tiff transferred from the DPP Raw

then the Jpeg opened with CS2

last and totally washed out the RAW in CS2

so i guess i will have to work with 2 programms ion the future. DPP for the basic

adjustments. then transfer it into a 16 bit tiff and if necessary work it over a little more in

    CS2.

last but not least: why not deliver RAW to the magazines. i used to send original slides to

them too in the past. (at least to some mags). their decission to buy my stories also

depend on how easy it is for them to work with my pics and all magazines said they would

be happy to get the RAW files in addition to the worked over Tiffs or Jpegs...

    greetings!

    seoulman

  9. ok, i found the trick with the 16 bit tiff. that works to some extent. one problem solved

but the key problem remains: outside of DPP the RAW (or now Tiff) has lost significantly in

sharpness, color and contrast. it is the same pic just as if someone put a thin grey layer

over it taking away the clarity and liveliness. in DPP the images look just perfect but there

seems to be no way to get that effect outside of that programm. and that is extremely

frustating as i can see how good it could be like.

i worked for about 20 minutes on a tiff earlier this evening. sharpening with nic sharpener,

reducing the noise with neat image, adjusting saturation, contrast and what not. then i put

both images on the screen (20 minutes CS2 result and 20 sec. DPP result and asked my

wife who is pretty good with things like that. she imidiatly said the DPP looked much

better without knowing which was which. and i felt the same way. very frustrating.......

if anybody has another good idea i am more than open. otherwise i have to give up the

idea of delivering the pics in the quality i can see in DPP.....

  10. hello,

thanks for the answers so far. yes, i tried to reopen the processed files in CS2 and that did

    not work out well.

one thing that really is strange, is that not only the alterations i made in DPP are not

transfereed to CS2 but mostly the picture is not very sharp at all in comparison to DPP.

After sharpening the pics with nic sharpener (in CS2) they were more sharp but also the

noise level went up a lot.

ok, but those seem to be different problems again. so how do i get the files ove? i noticed

the xmp files that suddenly are created when i try to safe the changes in DPP. or if i safe

the recipe they turn into vrd files which CS2 says it can't open.

please give me a little explanation step by step on how to transfer the files with the

changes so that CS2 can read them and the work i did in DPP is still visible in CS2.

    greetings

  11. hello,

i recently switched from analog to digital and started to work my RAWs with Canons software DPP. Now i

treid to transfer the results (which i was very happy with) to CS2 and was shocked, that it is a) not possible

and b) the RAW file on the CS2 plugin look like crap in comparison to DPP.

I looked around in the forums and was surprised to see that a lot of people seem to prefer CS2 and seem

to get good results. My RAWs look totally flat and dull on the CS2 pligin while they look crystal clear and

crisp on DPP. Also i do not see that i have more control over the RAW files on CS2.

Anyway I would be happy with DPP but i have to deliver the RAW files to magazines around the world and

they will most likely open them with CS2 for layouting and publishing. So whatever i adjust on the RAWs

will be worthless on DPP as it is not compatible with CS2.

How can it be that the difference is so great and still people use CS2. what am i doing wrong? please help

me out here as i am really a wondering how to solve this problem....

    grateful for any advise!

  12. hello,

i currently use the lowpro off trail bag and i am mostly happy with it. however the lowpro off-road seems

to have better protection from dirt and water and as i am about to change from analog to digital that

might be of importance. does anyone know if a camera with battery pack fits in the lowepro off-road

    hipbag? from the photo

    http://www.newsfix.de/news/693/detail.php?id=10051&item_start=12&rubrik=ABENTEURER

it looks a little like only cameras without battery pack might fit in but maybe there is someone here who

has the bag and knows for sure.

    greetings

  13. hello there,

for some time no i have been considering to make the switch to digital and though i am

still not completly at easy with doing so, i think it is inevitable looking at all the time that i

need to process my slides and turn them into digital files.

now there are a few things that still keep me concerned. will i be able to use my lenses

and my filters? i am very used to use polarizing filters as well as seoia ones and was not

yet able to recreate a similar effect with PS.

also i am very concerned if i have to replace some of my lenses as well wich means

additional costs. here is a list of the lenses i use. what do you think might need

    replacement?

    - 16-35 mm canon lense (bought in 2003)

    - 28-70 mm sigma ex lense (bought in 2001) (this one i would hate to replace. as we all

know there are good and not so good lenses. this one is very sharp indeed.)

    - 70-200 mm sigma ex lense (bought in 2002)

    - 105 mm sigma ex lense (bought in 2002)

and any ideas about the filters? some people told me they would add considerable noise.

    grateful for any suggestions...

  14. hello again,

well first an answer about the reimbursement for films and development. sadly i have

never received anything like that. i have a price per page or per story (depending on the

magazine and country) and that is what i get. how much money i spend getting the shots

together is my own trouble... (but i know that some people do get reimbursement. i am a

freelancer who produces the story first and sells it later. if someone would ask me to do a

special story i might ask for some extra cash..)

reading some of the new answers i think it might be possible after all to change to digital

in the near future. looking again at the canon page i noticed that the mark II 1ds has a full

frame cmos but the price of the body is out of my range so far. the 5D i could afford but

not if i have to change the body too often. usually i change bodies every 2-3 years but

they also have not been that expensive so far. why change a digi body if for the size of

images i produce (double page is the max) it is sufficient? is there any wear on the cmos or

other vital parts of the camera?

it seem dust is still the biggest issue. what about the sensitivity to vibrations and shocks

of the sensor and stuff? like i said i use the camera in rough terrain. but film doesn't care

much if you shake it (as far as i know).

ever heard of tools like the Kinetronics SpeckGRABBER Professional? bettert than a blower

    or just useless toys?

thanx again for all the answers and advice!

    cheers!

  15. hello,

thanx for all the quick and detailed answers. from what i read i see the following

    problems:

    - i change lenses a lot and i have to do so even in dusty environments. i just returned

from a photo-shoot from cambodia and that place is basically a dusty desert with a few

palm trees. if a digital camera i allergic to dust (i changed lenses with my SLR for years

under harsh conditions and it never caused any problems on the film. there is dust on the

mirror, which i can ignore until i have time to clean it off) than it will be difficulty for me to

    switch.

    - luckily i don't have much pressure from deadlines. i produce travel stories and sell them

often year after they have been produced, depending on the demand of the mags. but still

i could safe weeks of work and loads of money thinking of all the rolls i go through every

    year.

but if i have to change bodies a lot that will not really make a difference i guess....

    - so far i work with the EOS 30 which has served me well and has proven to be very

robust. i surely like the mark IIs but the crop factor kills me. more than half of my pics are

16mm shots and i would not like to give up a single mm. but i also don't think there is a

lens out there that could give me that range on a 1.3 cropfactor and still allow me to use

    filters..?

    - i don't do sport photography. if i would cover races 3pics/sec would probably be to slow

but for me i guess it would do. i would like to have the high res form the D5 though that is

said to almost aim at medium format quality.

    - living in korea i am not so sure if i can rent a camera for trials but maybe i can talk to

    canon korea directly.

thanx again for the advice and i still would be grateful for additional thoughts and

    opinions!

  16. hello,

i guess this question has popped up before a hundred times but still every case is slightly

different and maybe some people here have some good advice for me.

i am a semi-pro who works for motorcycle-magazines around the world. so far i am very

succesful with my work and i sell a lot of articles. but i am still working with slides so far

as that is what the magazines wanted when i started my work some years ago.

recently though i just scan the slides in (nikon coolscan V) and send the pics as digital

images. so why not change to digital at all and safe the hassle of scanning and so on?

well, first there is the problem with my job riding motorcycles often on dirt tracks with lots

of bumps and dust. my SLR has never caused me any problems with that (even survived

some minor accidents) but i don't know how let's say a Eos D5 (that would be the camera i

would aim at) would take the dust and so on?

then there is the question about my lenses: i mostly use the canon 16-35 mm, the sigma

ex 28-70mm and sigma ex 105 macro. would i able to use them with the 5D? (ok, of

course i could use them. the question is more: would it be advisable or not?)

i shoot with fuji sensia and pretty decend lenses but still when i see pics online (or

sometimes in the magazines) that where shot digitally they seem to be sharper than my

pics, even though i resharpen my scanned images with nic sharpener.

would a switch to a D5 (same lenses) rather improve image quality or not? what do you

    think..?

maybe someone here went through the same questions and can share some of his/her

    experiences...

    thanx!
