The local Canon service centre will sort this problem out under the terms of the warranty.

I use a 5D in the Scottish Mountains in winter all the time. I don't take any special precautions, and dont suffer because of it. Just make sure that the lens isn't steamed up and you'll be fine. If it is steamed up, a rocket blower is a pretty good way of clearing it.

Upon further investigation it would appear that the camera body is not recognising that there is a lens attached. All of my other lenses are working on that body, but not this one.
-
I tried the removal and reattach and cleaning the contacts, but to no avail. Any other ideas? I
forgot to mention there is not focussing activity either. My camera is working with my other
lenses.

My Bigma has started playing games. It was working fine yesterday, but now it is not. When I turn he
camera on the aperture value comes up as 00, when I fire the shutter I get a ERR message in the LCD panel
on the top of the body. Am I doing something stupid, or is it time to send it back to the shop?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
George

I think Canon Service Centres will do it once for free for you. They got 5D back to me in less than an hour. I just use a Giottos Rocket blower to get the dust off.

Beuh B - was there any need for the insults? How about you read the question - nowhere did they ask how to use their camera, they just asked how the lens worked, i.e. if it still uses aperture blades.

There are huge differences in the climate across Scotland at this time of year, but you would need to be very unlucky to get it so cold that it would diasble a DSLR. It has never happened to me.

I use a 20" screen on my desk, and that seems about the right size for my needs - not sure I would want to go much bigger than that.

I asked a similar question when i got mine. The noise is fine don't worry about it. i have put the link to the answers i received when i asked.
Capacitors may not whine, but the charging circuits most certainly do.

I went from a 20D with the 10-20 sigma to a 5D with 17-40L - the difference in image quality is huge - go for it. You know it is a good idea.

Try a large rocket blower for the sensor dust, and learn to live with the dust in the view finder. You will only make it worse if you try to clean it.
I took mine to a Canon Service place and they cleaned it out for free - they will do this once free. But as long as you dont try to clean it yourself you wont need to do this.
For me this is the only flaw with this camera.

Good choice of lens. I love mine, it is just so easy to get good results with it. I think there is a rebate available on it still, but i might be wrong.

I use a north face seraphim (alpine ice climbing pack) when i do this kind of thing. the ice axe loops are great for holding a tripod and the detachable lid is big enough to hold a fair amonunt of camera gear.

I cover all of my stuff under my home contents insurance.
Direct Line allowed me to upgrade all of my kit when mine was stolen earlier in the year. Pretty much all insurers will allow you to do this, or even give you a cash settlement if you so wish. My guess is that this, using contents insurance, is probably the cheapest option.
The exclusion I would look for would be if you are using your kit for commercial purposes.

I am having problems uploading an image to my portfolio. I get an error message saying that there is an
error with the database, back up then try again (or words to that effect). When i try again same thing
happens.
Any ideas?

Sounds to me like you need to get the latest camera raw plug-in. It can be downloaded from Adobe's website.

Hi,
I am looking for a Pelicase to hold my 5D plus battery pack with 70-200L f4
fitted, and to carry both a 50mm f1.8 and 17-40L. Any ideas which one will be
best? The reason I ask is that I am not sure how much space needs to be left
for padding and will need to buy it blind, due to a distinct lack of outlets
here in Edinburgh.
Thanks,
George

Don't know about buying second-hand software. But at the beginning of the year it was cheaper to buy a copy of elements then pay to upgrade it to CS2 than to just go out and buy CS2. I assume it will still be the same.

Is there a very thin white line in right hand side ofe histogram that goes all the way to the top that you are missing? If this tyoe if thing happens with mine it tends to be that little thin sliver on the right hand side.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have gone for the 50mm f1.8 prime - looks and feels like a toy, but luckily the cost is in line with the build quality. I have found the image quality to be excellent for the money.
I will however be saving my remaining pennies to go for one of the L lenses in this zoom range - maybe when i am saving i will find out that i don't need it.
Thanks again,
George.

Buy something like a Giottos Rocket Blower and blow the dust off the lens before you put the new lens on and you'll be fine. They are also pretty good for getting dust of the sensor when it does eventualy find it way there. I use mine in a dusty environment all the time and have no real problems. Canon will clean you sensor free of charge the first time you give it to them to clean, or they did with mine when i was stupid and got the sensor filthy.
Buy one they are great cameras.
