  1. <p>Now I find that after taking portraits for so long, I am more comfortable in front of the lens than ever before. From years of posing people, showing them what to do, when I get the opportunity to have a photo taken, I just have fun. Granted...I am in total control of post processing!</p>
  2. <p>I have a business page and a personal page. Some of my clients have requested to be my friends, and to be honest, over the course of years, they are really my friends. The way I see it, If Im worried about what Im writing, then perhaps I shouldnt write it. My friends list includes friends, family and my own children. My client "friends" are the least of my worries :)</p>
  3. <p>(Yes David! I did). A photographer recently quoted Ansel Adams on her blog. I truly feel that this really didnt have a lot to do with me, but I was just in the right place at the right time.<br>

  4. <p>Here is the information on the photo. David, funny what you said about closing the eyes and kissing. The first shot was taken dead on, so I yelled from the ground "kiss her!" and it was much better.<br>

  5. <p>I am very excited to have had my photo chosen. The plate was changed strictly by the owners request. He asked me to blur it out, but went a way that I thought was more fun. There definitly is alot of sky! It does make it nice for use as business cards though haha. Also, it had rained literally for days before the wedding, so the mere fact we had blue skies was something to remember. I have the original raw unedited file if anyone wants me to post it.</p>
  6. <p>Nadine! Thank you thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. AND it's functional. You rock! Now, I do not want to sound ignorant, but I will ask anyway. What is with the aluminum foil. What is the main purpose it serves? Thank you for not laughing at the question. Im at the point where I should know this stuff.</p>
  7. <p>Ill probably have to make due with the gear that I have, but wondering what I can do with my 580ex to make it look "older". I searched images of "photo girls" and well, honestly, they really arent the images I expected haha. It's a Black and White themed Ball. I may go with the trench idea, but Im more worried about my equipment being so 2000. Really not wanting to invest for a one night only deal.<br>

    Thank you everyone!</p>

  8. <p>I have been asked to participate in a "Truman Capote"-ish Party middle of this month. They would like for me to be the Paparazzi, and take photos of attendees upon arrival. I am given the following instructions : "Just have fun with it"<br>

Now, that I can do. I know my equipment and I know my job. However, any suggestions on attire, attitude, post processing "effects". Any situations that I should specifically be looking for. I think this will be a lot of fun however, I have never been in a Paparazzi situation before.<br>

Thank you for help and suggestions.</p>

  9. <p>I have a personal facebook, and I also have a business "fan" page. I utilize it as a blog so to speak. Yes, I put photos up on the page, and yes people take them for their own pages. However, I have been very successful with my facebook business page. I interact with clients, get my fans involved with studio changes, offer special "promotions" for my facebook fans. I get alot of bookings from friends of friends of friends. Here is the way I see it. I take someones photo. I put a few "examples" up on my business page. They comment on how much they like it. They "tag" themselves so it is on their page, their friends like it, comment on it and ask where it was taken. She tells them, on her page, and just like that, 400+ people have my website, and studio information. My name is out there.<br>

Am I busy? Indeed. Does facebook have anything to do with it? Indeed.<br>

  10. <p>I agree with David, Wallets are everything. I've even put 2 photos on a wallet with their name and year. Im sure Im not the first to do this! As you mentioned, photo books are great, A nice composit/collage in 10 x 10 format is a favorite of my seniors. One of my largest sellers is the 16 x 20 collage. Just looks "cool".<br>

As far as poses, I let them decide. I always tell them to just be them. Most of the yearbooks in my area require a formal pose, but for the rest, they just have a ball. These are the ones that parents often purchase more than the formal ones. Ive attached an example of a young lady who just had fun with it. Very comfortable, which makes it so much easier.</p><div>00UoJ5-182463884.thumb.jpg.93f88c8ed8cc26f5f0c8dd770f7eb9cb.jpg</div>

  11. Im hoping this is easy. I shoot raw. Always have. I use a compact flash card on my rebel XTI and open my raw files

using photoshot elements 6.0. I have never had a problem However, yesterday I shot with my rebel XSI using an sd

card. Downloaded the photos, and when I went to open them I got a prompt stating they were not in the correct file

format. What the heck is wrong? Is the XSI different? Is the SD card the problem? How can I open the raw files

from the sd so I can get to editing?

    Would love your help.

  12. Here in upstate ny, senior portraits is huge! I start shooting the first week of July, with some schools requiring yearbook photos by first week of school. I shoot well into november, for the students whos schools require them by december. I offer all yearbook photos, of all students of the same school, on one disc sent directly to the yearbook advisor already formatted to yearbook requirements.

I make postcards and send them to the class advisor in april of their junior year. All advisors have willingly passed them out to all of their students, or placed them in the office for kids to see them. I have never spent money on mailing lists. I also have a few student representitives with whom I shoot early. I give them a few specialty items, and also offer them discounts on prints for all referrals. It works well for me.

  13. I had to look at the posters name twice. I swear it could have been me writing this. I recently moved to a neighboring city about 40 minutes away. I have always had my studio in my home. My new house does not have the space for a studio. Nor did I want it to. I find myself working all hours of the day and night. Even when Im not shooting, I am editing, downloading, ordering. Well, you understand. My customers do not have unrealistic expectations that I will have their photos posted overnight, so why do I find myself doing so. My venture to "out of home" studio space will keep me working business hours instead of all hours. (or maybe that is the unrealistic expectation!)

I was lucky enough to find a studio in a small plaza three minutes away from my home. The plaza itself is established, and I am currently booked almost 2 months out with current clientel. I know that going from home studio to "space" is going to cut into my profits, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. Im looking forward to the stability, eating dinner instead of taking portraits, sleeping intead of editing and spending time with my kids instead of ordering. Will the transition be easy, Im not sure. I close in my current studio on the 15th and open in the new studio on the 26th. We will see when rent is due on September 1st if my positive outlook is still here.

Good luck in your decision. So far Im happy with mine, but its still all in my head. Reality could be very different :)
